This is an individual project.

Please answer THREE (3) questions (pick 1 question in each part A, B and C).
Please include your NAME, MATRICS NO and COURSE PROGRAMME.
This project mark is 15%.
Submit through EDMODO in form of PDF file. LATE SUBMISSION WILL NOT BE
ENTERTAINED.

Solve the following mathematical modeling problem.

A. Optimization
1. A farmer wants to enclose two rectangular areas near a river, one for lamb and one for cow.
There is 340m of fencing available. Express the area of the enclosures as a function of its
dimensions.
2. A container company is designing on open-top, square-based, rectangular box that will have
a volume of 54.5 cm3. Express the surface area of the box as a function of its width.

B. Applications of derivative
1. Had Galileo dropped a cannonball from the Tower of Pisa, 179 ft above the ground, the
balls height above the ground t sec into the fall would have been
.
a) What would have been the balls velocity, speed and acceleration at time t?
b) About how long would it have taken the ball to hit the ground?
c) What would have been the balls velocity at the moment of impact?
2. Coffee consumption in the United States is greater on a per capita basis than anywhere
else in the world. However, due to price fluctuations of coffee beans and worries over
health effects of caffeine, coffee consumption has varied considerably over the years.
According to data published in the Wall Street Journal, the number of cups f(x)
consumed daily per adult in year (with 1955 corresponding to = 0) is given by the
mathematical model
( )
a) Graph

( ) to show daily coffee consumption from 1955 through 1994.

b) Use ( ) to determine the year in which coffee consumption was least during this
period. What was the daily coffee consumption at that time?
c) Use ( ) to determine the year in which coffee consumption was greatest during
this period. What was the daily coffee consumption at that time?
d) Use ( ) to determine the year in which coffee consumption was decreasing at the
greatest rate.

C. Applications of integrations
1. You are driving along a highway at a steady 60mph (88ft/sec) when you see an accident
ahead and slam on the brakes. What constant deceleration is required to stop your car
in 242 ft? To find out, carry out the following steps.
i)

Solve the initial value problem

Differential equation:

(k constant)

Initial conditions:
ii)
iii)

2.

Find the value of t that makes ds/dt = 0 (The answer will involve k)
Find the value of k that makes s = 242 for the value of t found in step (ii).

a) Suppose that the velocity of a body moving along the s axis is given by the formula

i)
ii)
iii)

Find the bodys displacement over the time interval from t = 1 to t = 3 given that
s = 5 when t = 0.
Find the bodys displacement from t = 1 to t = 3 given that s = -2 when t = 0.
Then, find the bodys displacement from t = 1 to t = 3 given that
when t =
0.

b) Suppose that the position s of a body moving along a coordinate line is a

differentiable function at time t. Is it true that once you know an antiderivative of the
velocity function ds/dt you can find the bodys displacement from t = a to t = b even if
you do not know the bodys exact position at either of those times? Give reasons for
your answer.
