Deviance

Deviance is the behavior that violated expected rules and norms. It is the behavior that departs
significantly from social expectations. It may vary according to cultural norms for no thought or action is
inherently deviant. Deviance is actually natural in human nature. In the biological perspective, deviance
is a medication and is even considered in some cases as a physical illness. In the psychological
perspective, it is a personality or mental disorder, while in the sociological perspective, it is a symbolic
interaction, functional and even causes conflict in perspection. It may be caused by the structural strains
in the society, social labeling or even from the inequality in society. Though looking in the bright side,
deviance is actually a learned behavior and creates social cohesion.
Three of the most popular traits of the Filipinos that would relate the most to deviance is the
Ningas-cogon trait, Maana na habit and the bahala na attitude. The Ningas-cogon is the attitude
when we start something with great interest and enthusiasm , then after a short time, we lost interest
and stop whatever it is that we are doing. It is leaving things incomplete and just letting the wild fire
burn out quickly. Whenever we put our minds into doing something, it is expected of us to finish that
certain task, but when Ningas-cogon gets in the way, that is when we allow laziness to settle in, causing
us to procrastinate and just slack off and not finish the task and that is a bad thing. Another is the
Maana which is similar to the Ningas-cogon trait which both involves laziness. The Maana habit
means do it later which results in a very unorganized way of doing things, specifically for office tasks
because it affects the overall performance of a person. Skipping deadlines, stress and anxiety are just
some of the effects of the habit. Most procrastinators end up cramming the things that they have to do
because of all the delay. And one of the worst things that procrastinating, which leads to cramming, can
do is that it takes away the excellence that could have been put into a task because there is only little
room for time and effort. We do not accomplish things with the right time and effort expected of us to
put into a task because of this trait. Lastly is the bahala na attitude which is when we encounter an
experience in our life and we do not know what to do about it anymore that we tend to just leave it
alone and let come what may and do nothing about it. This attitude is bad because we tend not to push
ourselves anymore and just give up and go with the flow.
These three characteristics of Filipinos show how deviance is integrated to it. Filipinos do have
expected norms of them yet they too tend to depart from these social expectations. Filipinos are only
human too. They bleed when they fall down. They are not perfect.

Behavior Change
Behavior change refers to the actions or reactions of an object or organism usually in relation to
the environment. It can be conscious or subconscious, overt or covert, and voluntary or involuntary.
Behavior changes and is mold by the circumstances that happen in its surroundings. Whether we know
it or not, and whether we like it or not, these changes are naturally inevitable in nature and cannot be
prevented. Though for some people, the change happens because that is what they chose to do and that
decision was not stirred by the forces around them. Human behavior is greatly influenced by culture,
attitudes, emotions, values, ethics, authority, rapport, hypnosis, persuasion, coercion and may even be
by genetics.
Filipinos are said to be like bamboos. There is a popular saying, The Filipino is as pliant as a
bamboo. The bamboo is a tree found in tropical and subtropical regions. It is known for flexibility and
versatility. The bamboo has generally been considered as pliant and compared to the Filipino character.
Why so? Because the Filipinos are said to be, like bamboo, with flexibility, endurance and harmonious
with nature. No matter what comes in the way of Filipinos, may it be bad company or bad forces of

nature, they still manage to get through with it while standing strong and with smiles on their faces. And
that is one of the most admirable traits of the Filipinos. Although Filipinos do easily put their faith and
trust in other people and even other nations, they still are capable of standing up for their own beliefs
and ideas. They do not tolerate betrayal and oppression. Through the ups and downs of life, Filipinos
still manage to stay strong and stand up on their ground. Filipinos are strong and independent like that,
and they will at all costs fight for their freedom!
