11. (a) A M.S. shat rotating at 720 rpm is supported between two bearings 80 cm
apart. It carries two pulleys A and B at distance of 30 cm and 60 cm
respectively from the left bearing. 10kW of power is fed into the pulley A with
a diameter of 40 cm and taken out at the pulley B with a diameter of 30 cm
by vertical belt drives having the same ratio of driving tensions, which was
observed to be 2.5. assuming the following working stresses design the
diameter of the shaft (St = 75 N/mm2; Ss = 45 N/mm2)

12. (a) A 20 kN tensile load acts on the following members. Considering stress
concentration, calculate the maximum stress induced in each member.
a. A stepped shaft of diameter 50 mm and 25 mm with fillet radius 5 mm.
b. A rectangular plate 60 mm wide and 10 mm thick with a transverse hole
of 12 mm diameter.

(b)
13. (a) A composite spring has two closed coil helical springs as shown in the figure.
The outer spring is 15 mm larger than the inner spring. The outer spring has
10 coils of mean diameter 40 mm and wire diameter 5 mm. The inner spring
has 8 coils of mean diameter 30 mm and wire diameter 4 mm. When the
spring is subjected to an axial load of 400 N, find: a. Compression of each
spring, b. load shared by each spring, c. stress induced in each spring. The
modulus of rigidity may be taken as 84 X 103 N/mm2

15. (a) The load on a 100 mm full hydro-dynamic journal bearing is 9000 N. Speed
of the journal is 320 rpm. Let l/d = 1, c/d = 0.022mm.
a. Select an oil that will closely accord with the stated conditions
b. Determine the friction loss for the selected oil
c. The hydrodynamic oil flow through the bearing for the selected oil
d. The amount of leakage for the selected oil
