Which MBA? 2009

Background

University of
ChicagoBooth
School of Business

The University of Chicagos Booth School of Business is the second-oldest business school in America (founded in 1898) and has a deservedly
high reputation for research, scholarship and teaching ability in business education. It was named after alumnus David Booth in 2008 following
a $300m donation, the largest gift the university has received. The school boasts six Nobel laureates among its past and present faculty and
alumni, more than any other business school. It is large, with 1,100 students in its full-time MBA programmes, 1,400 on its Evening and Weekend
MBAs, 480 EMBA and thousands of executive education participants. Finance is probably the most acclaimed subject and students have a justified
reputation for number crunching, though the school is also strong in other areas, such as marketing and entrepreneurship.
Facilities

The full-time MBA is based in a $125m building in the middle of the university campus, the Charles M. Harper Centre, built in 2004. Facilities are
now among the best in the world, including 12 classrooms, 31 group study rooms, four outdoor terraces and a Winter Garden in a central atrium.
The part-time programmes are housed in the equally well-equipped Gleacher Centre in downtown Chicago, which also houses the North American
Executive MBA programme. The school has premises in Singapore for the Asian EMBA and in London for the European EMBA.

Booths two-year full-time MBA is highly flexible with only the LEAD (Leadership: Effectiveness and Development) course for first-year students
required. Students design their own curriculum within broad guidelines: three courses from the Foundations Core; four courses from the
Breadth Requirements; and two courses on general management. There is no requirement for a concentration (though 13 are offered) and
students are encouraged to take electives (11 in all) from a wide range including courses offered by other university departments.
A variation on the full-time programme, the International MBA, requires additional courses, an international internship or study abroad, and
proficiency in a second language. The programme generally takes 24 months to complete.
Part-time programmes include the Evening MBA (one evening a week) and the Weekend MBA, which runs all day on Saturdays. Both take
between two and a half and five years to complete and are identical to the full-time programme, though LEAD is not required.
The EMBA North America is run on alternate weekends at the Gleacher Centre and is also taught at Booths London and Singapore campuses.
Students from all three campuses begin the programme together in late June at the Chicago campus. During the second summer of the
programme, students from the three campuses work and study together as part of the international exchange sessions.

Student/alumni quotes
Booth provides you with outstanding resources along with
the flexibility to take advantage of those resources in whatever
way works best for you.
Perhaps the school needs more creative methods of soft
skills training.
