UTD – CHEM 1312 – General Chemistry II – Spring 2006

Section: 001 Mondays & Wednesdays & Fridays 9:00 – 9:50 am FN 2.102

Instructor: Paul Pantano (“Dr.P.”)

Voice Mail: x6226

Email: pantano@utdallas.edu

Office Hour: Mondays, 10:00 - 11:00 am (BE 3.506)

Prerequisite: The first semester of College-level General Chemistry (e.g., CHEM 1311 or 1315) is assumed.

Corequisite: CHEM 1014 (and CHEM 1112 & 1012)

Required Text: Chemistry: Matter and Its Changes, 4th Edition, by Brady and Senese.

Optional Text: Study Guide - Chemistry: Matter and Its Changes, 4th Edition, by Brady.

Attendance: will not be taken except to confirm you are on the official UTD “photo” roster and to confirm you have received this two-page syllabus; I also take attendance on Exam Days. You will be responsible for all assignments made during class whether you are in attendance or not. Be sure to check your UTD Email frequently for miscellaneous class announcements.

Homework: will be assigned but will not be collected nor graded. Answers will be posted in the hallway outside the office of Professor John W. Sibert (BE 3.520). Suggested homework problems can be found at: http://www.utdallas.edu/~sibertj/gen_chem_ii_Homework.htm

Quizzes: There will be 6-8 unannounced quizzes (administered in class) on lecture and homework materials. There will be no make-up quizzes given; quizzes can not be taken early. You will receive a grade of ‘zero’ for any quiz you miss. Your quiz grade will be determined by your best five quiz scores.

Exams: All four midterm exams and the final exam must be taken at the scheduled start-time (8:00 am CST) and day (see next page) in the selected (TBD) auditorium (not FN 2.102). There will be no make-up exams given; exams can not be taken early. You will receive a grade of ‘zero’ for any exam you miss. If your final exam grade is higher, it will replace your lowest midterm exam grade (provided the three other midterms were taken). The three-hour final exam is comprehensive and can not be substituted for any other grade (don’t miss it).

Grading: Four Midterm Exams (50 minutes each) Five Quizzes 60% 15%
