COURSE SYLLABUS: 3368 Mixed Media

SEMESTER: Fall 2005

Aug. 22 Lecture: introduction to Mixed Media


Class work: class room procedures, grading, etc.
Assignment: Scavenger hunt for mixed (combined)media uses and 2-D
relief. Bring cardboard and misc. scraps to class- boxes,
flat, etc. for next week. remember no class on the 5th .
labor day

Aug. 29 Lecture: Laying the ground work, dia logue through drawing with a
medium w/slides of cubism, dada, to present.
Class work: : Introduction to the first project with demo. no in class work
Assignment: 3 charcoal and paint drawings (speed painting)
Critique: review examples found in scavenger hunt.

Sept. 3 last day to drop without a W

Sept 5 No Class- we are all in Labor

Sept. 12 Lecture: Set up and approach to paint drawing


Class work: work on paint and charcoal from still life or alternate
source
Assignment: finish black and white mixed media drawing
Critique: Quick look at results from assignment

Sept. 19 Lecture: Adding color. Water based, oil and other paint additives
Class work: Add color to still life
Assignment: Finish final painting/drawing (color version) for grade.
Also turn in studies.
Critique look at finished work from blk and wht. drawings

Sept. 26 Lecture: Introduction to patterns in nature and architecture problem


Critique: Critique first assignments color drawing/paintings
Assignment: bring assortment of fabrics or xeroxed etc. patterns and cut
outs of interiors and architectural references

SEPT. 30 ‘UNREAL OPENING’ YOU MUST BE THERE!!!!

Assignment: finish collage/ altered

Oct. 10 Class work: in class work on patterns


Assignment: finish project for Oct 17th class

Oct. 17 Lecture: The portrait series introduction/ with slides (portraits


optional)
Assignment: take a series of photographs for box set series
Critique: critique on pattern collage works

Oct. 24 Lecture: Translating from computer to material and vice versa


Class work: Demos on variety of methods and application. includes
photo emulsion and blueprinting.
Assignment: decide on box size 4-6 panels (collect ideas) and develop
Photoshop images or other devices
Critique display photos to work from

Oct. 31 Class work: Chuck Close video, in class work on panels – devise
strategy
Critique Post rough out from computers

Nov. 7 Lecture and demo on monoprinting

Nov. 14 Class work: Portrait project


Critique: Quick critique 2 portraits.

Nov. 21 Class work:


Assignment: turn in 2 portraits (or other) for festival exhibition.

Nov. 25 Fall Arts Festival we will most likely be putting up a wall for this
show, Plan on coming to this.

Nov. 28 Class work: Finish monoprints for final critique….. 8 to 10 various


monoprints.

Dec. 5 Critique: Final Class Critique on portrait series. Turn in entire portfolio
Of works done in the class along with notebook and documentation.
