What is Fileway?

Outline of fileway
Fileway is an online utility which allows students to access their documents and
course work/materials from an external computer or device. Fileway is a gateway
between the internet which will allow you to connect to the university network
and search your online drive for files. Within Fileway, you can view them, edit
them and even download/upload files.

What Fileway offers?

Fileway offers an active directory environment which allows students to securely
access files and resources remotely. FileWay also integrates with Outlook so you
can easily email the work without having to log into a client or email system.
Fileway is compatible with all browsers as well as file servers and any user
desktop (operating system). This is handy due to students possibly using
Linux/Mac OS X operating systems as well as mobile devices (android).
FileWay is very easy to use as it replicates the user environment of Windows
which is very familiar to most students.

Do I need any software or experience?

No, FileWay does not use any client-side software or plugins. There is no external
experience needed as FileWay uses a simple but intuitive design so anyone can
use it.

When am I able to use fileway?

Fileway is an online service available 24 hours a day. Fileway is able to handle
10,000 users online at any given time and it will be available 365 days of the year.
This means that if you need to grab work late in the evening or early in the
morning, fileway will be available.

How do I use fileway?

Fileway is a built in utility within the universitys
intranet/portal. To locate it, find your information section
within the webpage.

Step 1
Here is the title and drop down menu of our college webpage. Here you can see the
information area.

As seen below, here are our online utilities. Fileway is available here.

Step 2
Here is the login page for Fileway; here you will need to input your username and
password from college/university which will allow you to log in to your desktop.

How do I use fileway?

Once logged into FileWay, you will be presented with a screen which is very similar to
the Windows desktop environment.

Step 3
As you can see, this is my user folder. At this point in time we cant do much as we arent in a
suitable folder to utilize our work. Go into your user folder.

What now?
Step 4
Once youre in your user folder, you can begin to use the service. As you can see at the top,
you have these options available. There are also other options, but these are mainly for
customization and displaying the files. These are the ones we need.

Uploading work?
Uploading Uploading work is as simple as clicking a button. You can upload
any piece of work you want at any time as well as zip/rar files if you archived
them for ease.

How?
Step 5
Once youve clicked the upload button, a webpage will appear asking you to
either add a file or start uploading. For now you should click Add Files. Once
youve clicked, you will be presented with a file browser which will wait until
youve chosen a file to upload.

Customizing work?
If you ever feel the need to customize your work (renaming,
downloading/uploading work) you can easily do it through this feature.
By clicking Actions in the menu bar, you are able to copy/paste/cut and
rename work (once selected) at your will.

I want to rename my work, how?

Step 6
By clicking the Rename feature, you are easily able to rename your
work as shown below.

I want to download all my work at once, how?

Step 7
By using the Zip and Download function, you are able to zip up all the
files in the folder into 1 extractable folder and download them to
whatever device you are logging into Fileway from.

I want to delete some work, how?

Step 8
Deleting work is also very simple, once you have the file selected (be
sure which one it is) click the delete button, you will then be prompted
with a message from the webpage to ensure you want this file deleted.

Emailing work?
Emailing work is very similar to emailing on outlook or any other client. Its even
easier as Fileway will automatically attach the item you want to email to the
message.

How?
Step 9
Firstly, select a piece of work or a file you wish to email, for me it will be a HTML
document.

Step 10 Once youve made sure its selected, click the Email button at the top to
initiate the emailing process. You will be prompted with a window asking you to add
the email address or name of the recipient as well as the other appropriate
Here in this screenshot you can
see that I have added my
attachment and subject as well as
the recipient. But we have 1 more
step, you will need to make sure
youve checked the circle that says
Attachment, this way the user can
download the work.

Downloading/Viewing Work?
Step 11
If you need to download work to edit or revise you can easily do it with this tool. Once
you have found the required file you need to download you will simply click the download
button at the top of the page and it will automatically download the file to your
computer. Depending on your browser you may have to select an area to save the file.
You can also view your work within the same page, right next to download click View.
This will open the file externally in another tab.

Depending on the file size, it will

have to load the file into the
browser. You may have to wait
depending on your internet
connection and computer speeds.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Fileway is a great online utility for remotely connecting to your

school/college/university network to access files and work.
Within fileway, you will be able to access all your course files and materials without any
problems 24 hours a day. I hope this new addition to the University will provide a helping
hand for completing work outside of school times. This also reduces the rate of losing work,
if you lose a portable flash drive or external hard drive you will lose all your work. Whereas
with fileway, you will not lose your online resources due to backups and redundant backups.
