weighs 12 2 lbs. Recommended dose: 200 mg/kg/24 hrs divided Q6H. How many
milligrams of Ampicillin should be given for each dose? On hand is Ampicillin 250mg/ml.

5. The physician orders ranitidine (Zantac) IVPB to be given Q 8H. The child weighs 74 lbs. The
recommended dose of ranitidine is 2 mg/kg/24 hrs divided Q 8H. Maximum dose not to
exceed 50 mg/dose. How much should be ordered by the doctor for each dose. Ranitidine
is available 25 mg/ml. How much will you draw up to give?
Step 1: 74 2.2 = 33.64 kg.
Step 2: 33.64 X 2 = 67.28 mg per 24 hours
Step 3: 16.82 mg 3 = 22.4 mg
Draw up 0.9 ml.
6. A 15 month old child has a fever and the mother calls inquiring how much Motrin she should
give. The child weighs 23 lbs. The recommended dose for motrin is 10 mg/kg/dose. Motrin
is available in a suspension 100mg/5ml. How much would you instruct the mother to give?
Step 1: 23 2.2 = 10.45 kg.
Step 2: 10 X 10.45 = 104.5 mg per dose
Step 3: The mother should be instructed to administer 5.2 ml
7. Dexamethasone will be ordered IVPB Q6H for a child who is 8 yrs. and weighs 53 lbs. The
recommended dose is 2 mg/kg/day divided Q6H. Calculate the dose that will be ordered.
Dexamethosone is available 40 mg/ml. How much will you draw up to give for each dose?
