Prevention of Aedes breeding in water storage
containers in Sri Lanka
According to entomological surveillance during
2012, 2013 and 1st quarter of 2014 detection of
Aedes mosquito breeding in water storage
containers in Sri Lanka ranges from 14-15 % of
total breeding places. The proportion varies
according to the geographical area (districts),
degree of urbanization and time of the year when
it directly link with the irregular supply of pipe
borne water for domestic utilization. Dry zone
areas usually show higher proportion of positive
breeding in water storage containers.
In Sri Lanka, main types of water storage
containers are cement tanks(both ground level
and overhead tanks), barrels, pots, cans, etc. those
that are found in both domestic and peridomestic
environments where Aedes mosquitoes prefer to
lay eggs.
Infestation of premises in the same area/region
may vary according to the housing
characteristics. In congested premises in urban
areas, most water-holding containers are located
indoors, the no. of water storage containers are
more with increasing number of inhabitants,
owing to the high water consumption. Installation
of a pipe borne water supply system in the
premises can change the water-storage practices
of the residents. Storage of rainwater which is
more suitable for breeding of Ae. aegypti may
increase the chances of infestation of the
premises by the mosquito. In addition, the type
and height of the building (high and low-rise
buildings); construction pattern; and the
condition of the premises such as degree of shade
conditions of the house yard may also influence
infestation (Tsuzuki et al.2009).
