Sekhukhune
District
welcomes
the festive
season

Captain Solomon Moholane - Station Commander

The festive season is one of the special times when family, friends and colleagues
get a chance to come together and reunite after been apart to different places, such
as either to workplaces, school etc.
The most important thing is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and the ending
of the year. As the station commander of Leboeng SAPS I would like to wish all the
people a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
During this festive season as the Police we will not tolerate any criminal activities
in our policing precinct. People who engage in criminal element will face the law. We
further advice our communities not to walk alone during the night especially ladies
because they sometimes become the victims of crimes.
We are going to monitor the taverns within our policing area that they operate
within the prescribed times and comply with the liquor act. We are going to intensify
our patrols and high police visibility within our policing area to make sure that the
people who are in or visited our policing area feel safe and are indeed safe.

Executive Mayors
Christmas message

he year 2014 as nature will dictate, had its own achievements and challenges
for different families and Institutions. For others, it was a good year full of
achievements and blessings, for others it was a year full of misfortunes and
miseries. I take this opportunity to congratulate those who succeeded in their various
endeavors such as business, academic, family and further encourage them to
achieve more going forward into the New Year.
I equally take this opportunity to encourage those who struggled to actualize their
dreams and aspirations under this imminent year. We sent comforting words to those
who lost their love ones in 2014; we say your loss is our loss. Above all, the year
2014 will be remembered in the annals of history as the year South Africa
commemorated the first anniversary of the passing of its greatest sons and father of
the nation first democratically elected president of South Africa Mr Nelson Rolihlahla
Mandela. It is equally heartening to see our social partners such as traditional
leaders, business chambers, civil society etc, and steadfastly working hand in hand
with government to address developmental issues. We value such partnership
cognizant of the fact that development needs participation of all social partners.
We notice with sadness the ongoing loss of lives on our roads. And our message
is that - one life is one too many. We appeal to road users to obey and observe all the
rules of the road including speed limits. Equally disturbing is the number of incidence
of violence unleashed by people on each other during festive. It appears the main
cause of this anomaly is alcohol abuse. We call upon our people to respect life and
treat each other with respect, comradeship and love. We say no to senseless
murders, assaults and violence within our communities.
We call on parents and shebeen/tavern owners to be very strict on alcohol sale to
children under age of 18. Let us protect our youth and guide them to a bright future
full of hope and possibilities. On that note, we once more wish our matriculates best
of luck with their much awaited 2014 final results. We are confident they will surpass
the much published success of 2013 and achieve the 80% earmarked for the
Limpopo Province. The district and its local municipalities have established bursary
funds, needy and deserving learners are encouraged to visit municipal offices to
apply.
Our Districts emergency hotline 0800 33 00 22 is readily available 24/7. During
this festive season, all of us who can, and are able to, are compelled to lend a hand
to those individuals and families that are unable to support themselves, and to show
compassion to children that do not have clothes, something to eat or a simple gift to
bring a smile to their little faces.

On behalf of the District Municipality, I Cllr Mogobo David

Magabe, the Executive Mayor, wish you a Merry Christmas and
Prosperous New Year. Do not Drink and Drive & Arrive Alive!

The year of Heroes at Tubatse Chrome

Going for a green

economy
Tubatse Chrome, one of the Samancor Chrome
Smelting Operations situated in Steelpoort,
Limpopo has undertaken a commitment of choice
to preserve the environment by harvesting the
waste heat from the smelting operations and
generate electricity. The company still prides itself
with the production of charge chrome (core
business) that enables the creation of a strong,
clean and safe stainless steel that adds lasting
value for a brighter future, in a true sense that
supports sustainability initiatives.
The Green Economy Project was approved early
2011 and the design work commenced promptly.
The civil construction work commenced late 2012
and the mechanical assemblies continued until
May 2014. A total of six Heat Recovery Steam
Generators (HRSGs) were built with a total
capacity of 146t/h of steam and 2 x 15MW TurboGenerator units. To further preserve the
environment in terms of water consumption,
Tubatse opted for Air Cooled Condensers with
frequency controls for efficient operation. The
plant has its own Reverse Osmosis (RO) water
treatment plant which feeds from treated water
pumped through boreholes and plant recycle to
further reduce ground water contaminations
from our operations.
The plant has capacity to generate 216GWh of
power per annum with a saving of approximately
126 000t of coal, reducing the carbon footprint
by approximately 200 000t CO2e per annum.
There is no generation of extra waste gas, slag,
dust or other harmful gases. These aspects
together with the reduced dust to the gas
handling plant render the project compliant to

the requirements of the Clean Development

Mechanism (CDM): Saving energy; reduced blow
down; high technology; good economic efficiency;
low energy consumption; low pollution and full
exertion of the advantage of human resources
The commissioning of the plant commenced
February 2014, with two boilers located at the
West Plant. The rest of the 4 boilers were
commissioned in June 2014. Turbine 1 was
synchronised for the 1st time on 23 March 2014
and generated a maximum of 16.5MW (Peak) on
18 September 2014!! Turbine 2 was synchronised
on 25 June 2014 and generated a maximum of
15.3MW (Peak) on 28 November 2014. The
optimisation processes are underway to ensure we
reach our milestone of 30MW continuous
generation.
The project has had a significant impact in the
social challenges of the Greater Tubatse
community. Over 20 individuals were trained in
basic skills in various disciplines including fitting,
electrical, welding etc. Over 50% of the capital
spent on the project was spent locally with ad hoc
work given to the local Greater Tubatse
contractors. The project has resulted in permanent
employment of 35 personnel including crafts,
operators and supervisors.
We take pride in leading the ferrochrome industry
in the waste heat recovery projects to generate
electricity. It is a STRIDE from the commitment of
sustainable development and positioning of our
business to be technologically competitive in our
processes.

World Aids Day
On the 1st of December, employees at Tubatse
Chrome commemorated World AIDS Day with a

woman living with HIV/AIDS. The message
Dont discriminate, if youre not infected, you
are affected really hit home as many of us do
not realise the impact that this dreaded disease
has on our lives even if we are not infected.

Tubatse Chrome wishes all a blessed Christmas and prosperous New Year!

Watervalsrivier Geloftefeesvieringe 2014

Die Geloftefees-vieringe in die vallei is
gewoonlik die hoogtepunt van die valleiers se
jaar.
Burgersfort gele. Die eerste feeshuis is uit sink
gebou deur onder andere Martiens van
Rensburg en Koos Naud.
Gedurende 1948 word die feeshuis herbou met
bakstene wat deur Dirk Winterbach gemaak is.
Die totale boukoste van die gebou het 600
beloop. In die vroer jare van die herdenkings
is daar nog met ossewaens gekamp. Waens is
steeds gehandhaaf.

Ons herdenk dit dus as n geloofsdaad, waar
die Trekkers hul swakheid en afhanklikheid
erken het, en waar hul nederig bondgenootskap
gesoek het by God. Bloedrivier word dus nie
beskou as n oorwinning van wit oor swart nie,
maar as n oorwinning van Christelike orde oor
chaos en doodslag. (Artikel: Elize Ballack)

Reaching out to the children of Apiesdoring

On Saturday last week Pastor Lifi Tlaka hosted an outreach to the children of
Apiesdoring.
The group gathered at the sports grounds and despite experiencing challenges
such as a failure of sound equipment and delayed transport, they enjoyed
themselves thoroughly.
The children were entertained with various games such as sack race and egg
and spoon races. Although fun was what drew the children there, it was not only
games being played. During the day Pastor Lifi also spread the word of God to
the children and they were encouraged to speak out against abuse and violence.
Pastor Lifi thanked everyone who contributed towards the success of the day.
Thanks to the
donations he
received, the
children could be
fed before going
home at the end of
the day.

Helping rural communities

improve access to water
Christmas came early for the community of Kgautswane and
surrounding villages. They were donated more than 200 water
tanks and hippo rollers with the aim to alleviate the daily struggle
of carrying water on their heads.
The project is internationally recognised and is linked to Nelson
Mandela who during his tenure wholly supported it. He once
appealed all organisations to support the project as it positively
changing the lives of millions of South Africans.
According to Grant Gibbs who is the executive director of the
project, they mostly help women and children as they are the
ones who endure the burden of transporting water. The Hippo
Roller enable them to transport more water, more easily and
in less time from water points that are often located far from
their homes. We achieved this by partnering with like minded
organisations and individuals who feel compelled to share their
wealth with poorer communities he said.
Women, children and elderly people are mostly the ones forced
to fetch and carry water to their homes. Water points are often
about 1 - 10 km away. It is time consuming to collect water
requiring multiple trips. Water is heavy and carrying water on
the head can cause neck and spinal injuries.

The Water Roller is the solution to these as it allows a person to collect

5 times more water than a single bucket by simply rolling it along the
ground (pulling or pushing it).
The Hippo Water Roller is effective in the following;
Carries 90 litres of water; Last longer (5 to 7 years); Durable-designed
to use in tough terrains; Weight of water is borne on the ground and
distributed over a wide rolling surface; The wide rolling surface helps
compact soil to minimise erosion unlike narrow wheelbarrows; Improves
hygiene and health; Empower women and children; More time to
attending school for better education.
The 202 water rollers and tanks were distributed through the
Kgautswane Thusong Service Centre and received by Clara Masinga
who is the centre manager
and founder of the centre.
She
encouraged
the
community to look after the
water tankers and not misuse
them.
