1. You love travel and have travelled a lot in your life: Peru, Switzerland...

How much
do you think going to foreign countries and discovering different cultures have
affected you as a game designer?
Yes. It affected me a lot.
Making game is same as my reading poem.
I want make my poem for the people on this planet.
I am not making game only for Japanese.
If I did not see Perus children were playing video game in front of me,
I may stop to work for video game.
2. You also love litterature, especially foreign books. I think The Little Prince (
) by Saint-Exupry was an influence on Little King Story for the Wii.
Are there any other books you'd like to refer to, especially some who might have
been an influence on Chulip?
I love childrens book. For example,
Michael Endes Never ending story, momo,
This is not the story book.but I was watching mr Kara juros theater often when I was
young.
He is very famous Japanese under ground Playwright.I respect him very much.
3. The best part of Chulip is how fun it is to simply walk around the game's town.
Chulip is funny and surreal, but it's also a lot like everyday Japan. I often got hungry
when playing Chulip because it made me think of yakitori-ya! Why did you choose to
go for something authentic?
I love real world. Realistic world. There is fortune and hapless in realistic world.
At that moment, I was living in small area called Meidaimae in Tokyo,
And I was often drinking whisky at small bar near my house.
I was talking strange people in the real world everyday.
I noticed true surprise exist between real world and unreal at that time.
That why, you can see real yakitori atmosphere in my chulip for that I want you to
feel something strange world in chulip.

4. Kissing in public doesn't really happen in Japan. Why did you want to make a
game about something that is more Western, in a Japanese setting?
This contradiction is my poem.
Kissing is really important for the people. And you feel Japanese people don't kiss on
the road. Yes it is right.
Even though they looks like they don't kiss usually, but people are kissing in the
house often in japan.
I know everybody need somebody, every body need to love somebody.
I wonder it will be wonderful if people can kiss each other in all over the world
everywhere every moment.it is good for love and peace.
5. GiFTPiA and Chulip are different games but they have a lot in common. Do you
think there is a "LOVEdeLIC spirit" living through Punchline, skip and Vanpool?
No, I do not feel so.
I love vanpoo work. I feel sympathy.
But I don't like GIFTPIA.
I don't feel similarity of our lovedlic-era.
My favorite part of GIFTPIA is taniguti-sans music only.
6. Are the characters of Chulip purely fictional, or were you inspired by people you
know, or maybe even yourself?
Chulip's characters are based on my friend and neighbor often. They are living in
real world.
I often use my friend for making my story. It is not only chulip.
7. Chulip has both a light-hearted side, and a more adult and serious side. For
example, you wanted to talk about students that are afraid of going to school
because of social pressure. I also really liked Batayan's story with his job at the
factory. What were your inspirations for telling these stories?
How did you notice this story part? Can you read Japanese text what I wrote?
You understand very well what I want express in chulip.
There is a lot of metaphor in chulip. And one is WALL OF CAVE IN UNDERGROUND
I wanted to express the walls in the life.
Young guys, old guys, office worker, muscle man, drunk, teacher, student, every
body is feeling "the wall" which is invisible and hard.
The wall is standing In front of everybody suddenly between each ones now and
future.
I wonder that everybody often feel that I am bird in a small birdcage.
Dont you feel so sometime?
Maybe I am green. Usual adult can be living without watching birdcage consciously.

Batayan escaped from his birdcage in the story.

8. Mr. Suzuki, Mr. Inoue, Mr. Saito, Mrs. Iwata... They are strange people, but they're
very charming. Could you talk a bit more about them? Did you create their looks
yourself? And how did you decide on giving them this personality?
They are stereotype characters of adult.
Usual Adult are living like them.
They mind their salary.
They mind insurance too much.
They mind their rules and authority.
Adult is like them.
But I feel adults is ,,, charming.
Every adults have a nice point.
I love strange adult peoples.I love elder people very musch.
9. I also loved Chulip's soundtrack by Mr. Taniguchi - especially the musics that
sounds a bit like . Did you give any directions on what kind of music he should
create?
Fundementaly,I believe him perfectly.
But I and Taniguchi-san love talking too much.
We chat very much often.
So, Actually we discuss a lot before we are going to make video game.
I remember the time that I was making Chulip with him.
We were talking about Japanese animation"Bakabon", Japanese 70's Kayoukyoku,
and Louis Armstrong, do bop, serge gainsbourg of France.
I remember like this a lot.
10. The message between the designer of the game and the players is very
important. What is the general message you wanted to express in Chulip?
This answer is too simple .
"Each person's different happiness"
Money in bank account is not only fortune in the life.
Everybody have different life, different happy life.
