ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413] 1

INTRODUCTION
Environmental- Community service has always been fundamental in any
community where it not only is defined as a service that is performed for the
benefit of the public, it is also important through it's positive impact on the
community and environment.
It is extremely clear and apparent that our environment has been long
deteriorated by none other than the people inhabiting it, which by all means,
us. Although we have taken steps to repair and prevent further deterioration
on the environment, irreversible effects still takes places and eventually it will
still ensue. The right and fastest way to start making a difference is by
beginning with mobilizing communities regarding their own issues especially
starting from the younger generation.
"My Community My Commitment " can be defined as an environmentalcommunity service project that is more focus on the organization like social
service organizations, non profit providers and associations that engage both
young people and adults as volunteers. My Community My Commitment "
isn't just an environmental-community service project that explores the sense
of environmental and community engagement as a future designer, it also
aims to instill and expose young members of the society with a strong sense
of communal responsibility, engagement and skills. What makes the this
project a stand out from the rest of the global intervention towards the
environment, is that it creates an opportunity to the young generation where
they could utilize and provide creative and sustainable approaches to lend a
helping hand in solving their local communities' issues. In addition, this project
also allows one to engage with the team and deepens teamwork abilities that
is crucial in developing good professional practice. Moreover, this participation
allows a deeper understanding and sense of responsibility to the community
as well as it practices the young generation about creative problem solving of
real-world challenges.
This " My Community My Commitment " project is not a responsibility or an
obligation; but it is indeed a commitment. As an architecture student or a
future architect to be, we serve this particular non-profit organization as a
client and propose a few environmental sustainable designs to improve their
condition. Throughout the whole project, this had helped us to build a person's
character, improves our communication skill with each other, being able to
work on a team and being able to take on a leadership role. In the end of the
project, we had a clear and deeper understanding of the words "Sustainable"
& "Environmental-Community".

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413] 3

REASONS WHY WE ENGAGE THIS SITE.

Environmental education should begin during the early years of a person's life
where such experiences play a critical role in shaping life-long attitudes,
values, and patterns of behaviour toward natural environment. This is
because young children will be able to learn about the environment by
interacting with it.
However, many young children have limited opportunities for such
experiences. Yet, it's not just children living in urban areas that occurred to be
having so little exposure to the nature environment. Many young children,
regardless of where they live in urban or rural areas, spend most of their time
in settings and activities that keep them essentially isolated from direct
contact with the nature.
What the young children been experiencing these days are that recreation
tends to be indoors, transportation tends to be by car or other motor vehicle
versus walking, and children tend to be much more oriented toward the
classroom than outdoors. This resulted many young children are at risk of
never developing positive attitudes and feelings toward the natural
environment.
The reason why we've engaged SJK(C) Wah Lian as our site for the " My
Community My Commitment " project is because it is a rural education
institute that houses primary students of age 7 till 12. We proposed to instill
environmental education onto students in between that age seeing as it is
their early childhood years. Moreover, SJK (C) Wah Lian has a vacant land in
their school grounds that have been left alone for years. We will be able to
use that vacant land to provide a comfortable recreation outdoor space for the
students because children learn best through direct, concrete experiences,
and they need to be immersed in the outdoor environment to learn better.
Optimally, we proposed to provide outdoor exposure to the students on an
almost daily basis.
We proposed this site to conduct our environmental-community project at
SJK(C) Wah Lian as we would like to raise awareness and knowledge among
the younger generation regarding environmental issues and how we could
prevent it starting from a younger age. Hence, SJK(C) Wah Lian is the perfect
choice of site and we believe that it will provide a great opportunity for us to
make a difference as designers and as conscientious members of the youth
generation.

PROJECT
STATEMENT
&
OBJECTIVE

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413] 5

PROBLEMS STATEMENT
SJK (C) Wah Lian is a primary school consists of six blocks of
buildings. With the number of buildings in the school compound, therefore
there are limited spaces for greenery.
The environmental-community issue faced by our case study at the
primary school is the unused vacant land in the school grounds. It is found
that there is damp water accumulated at that particular land especially after
rain. This causes an increase of Dengue among students as it encourages the
breeding of mosquitos with presence of damp water at that vacant land.
The land is remained vacant until time as previously the school board
has appointed a construction for a pavilion to be built at that particular land.
Due to the construction company being hold, the pavilion wasnt constructed.
Thus, we proposed to build a small garden for students as a spot to hang out
or rest. We will also provide labelling for each plant so students can have a
better knowledge about the surrounding plants.

OBJECTIVES
1. To increase awareness of current environmental issues locally.
2. To induce creativity in attempting to explore the current environmental
circumstances.
3. To allow students to explore the opportunity to work with the
community and for the community.
4. To create awareness of the importance of creating an environmentally
sustainable project or design or services.
5. To be able to understand and explain the principles of sustainability
from environment and social.

EXPLORATION AND
UNDERSTANDING
OF SITE

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413] 17

Exploration and Understanding of Site

Diagram above shows the site plan of the site, the highlighted part
indicates the location of the installation.
The location of our specific site is located between two row of single story
classrooms. The site is roughly around 4m x 12m and the available land for
installation is roughly around 4m x 3.5m. The site served as a resting area for
the students of SJK(C) Wah Lian but because of the poor condition of the site,
the resting area started to run down about few years ago. Therefore, we
decide to proposed an installation at the site not only for beautification
purposes but also to provide a great learning environment by instilling green
knowledge to the students. Before we proposed our ideas to the principle of
the school, we conducted a detailed analysis of the site. There are few threats
that we are able to identified from the site which could be categorised into 2
parts.

Viewable conditions

Diagram above shows the appearance and condition of the existing site.

18 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413]

The existing site that we have choosen located just beside the gazebo with
some seating area beaneath it. The shaded area of the gazebo was not big
enough to cover and protect the students from rain and sun. Besides that, the
existing gazebo looks dull and unpleasant looking which causes students to
abandon this seating area and seek for other resting area like canteens or
classroom during recess time. Other than that, the learning environment of the
site should be upgraded by implementing environmental knowledge to the
site. On the other hand, the bare land not only look dull but also causes a lot
of environmental issues.
The first and most prominent issue that we can identified from the site is
flooding problem. According to the authority, flooding problem had been
bothering them for years. After analysing the site, we confirmed the uneven
ground and poor drainage system causes the problem.

Diagram above shows water clogging the existing site which causes
unpleasant odour.
Besides, we also found out that the potted plants below the gazebo is poorly
taken care. Most of the plants appeared to be yellowish or brownish due to
dehydration. The planter pot is not deep enough which indirectly affect the
growth of plants. Despite, the variation of plants is minimal and there was no
labelling for the existing plants.

Diagram above shows unhealthy potted indoor plant due to lack of

consideration of site during selection of plants.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413] 19

Lastly, the surface of the existing seating area are covered with disgusting
fungus which affect the appearance and the seating experience of the user.
Moreover, the surface of the seats heat up when exposed to sun during
morning.

Diagram above shows dull and uninteresting gazebo with poorly

maintained bench.

Non-viewable conditions
The exposure of land to direct sunlight might affect the carbon and life cycle
of the site. The main reason behind this is because direct sunlight degrade
the organic soil and bacteria on the surface of the land causing it to release
carbon dioxide gas.
On the other hand, the water catchment area will produce awful and
unpleasant odour. Besides, the water catchment area also affect the growth of
existing vegetation. The roots of the existing vegetation might rot due long
term soaking. In addition, the water catchment area might transform into a
mosquito breeding nest which might lead to serious issues like dengue fever
and malaria.

20 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413]

Identified Issues
Unused Vacant Area
The area is spacious and not used to its full potential. It is suitable to grow
plants and beautify the school compound.

Lack of greenery
The school compound consists of six blocks of building causing lack of space
for plants.

Accumulation of water
The ground will be accumulated by water during the rainy days.

Problem:
The bottles which made up of plastic cannot last long especially when the
sunlight will directly heat the water bottles which might melt the bottle.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413] 23

AFTER
Solution:
Therefore, weve changed the designs from the water bottles installation to bamboos
installation. The reasons why weve choose the bamboos is because bamboos can
last longer and more stable compared to plastic bottles.

28 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413]

EXECUTION WORK (PROBLEM & SOLVING)

Pallets Garden Chairs
1. Problem:
During the assemble process of the bench, we found that the cut out pallets
of the bench legs were too short and there are no more available pallets for
the bench legs replacement. Therefore, we thought of a new solution.
Solutions:
We realized that the design of the bench wasnt stable enough. Therefore, we
involved our critical thinking immediately and we reuse the faulty bench legs
pallets and applied on the support system of the bench legs. The assembling
process of the 45 degree bench legs support system is illustrated through the
diagram below. The additional support system allowed the dispersion of load
to the additional support system instead of the original bench legs which
indirectly allows it to be safe and more stable.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413] 29

2. Problem:
After weve assembled all the parts of the bench we realized that the bench
legs were not 100% stable which might endangered the safety of the users.
Solutions:
Therefore, in order to make the bench more stable for the sake of safety of
users, again, we added another wood pallets between the side bench legs
and the back support pallets to enhance the stability of the bench.

Uneven ground on site

1. Problem:
The choosen site is very muddy causing the rainwater to accumulate at the
side of the site due to uneven surface.
2.
Solutions:
To solve it, weve covered the additional layers of soils to resurface the
uneven ground. The selections of soils were based on the colour scheme and
vegetation of the existing site. Weve choosen garden soil to encourage the
restoration of original appearance of site and growth of installed plants.

30 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413]

Bamboo Installation
1. Problem:
The irregular openings of the treated bamboos causes joining problem. Size
lengths of the bamboos are not equal and the bamboos are not straight.
Solutions:
Therefore, instead of letting the bamboos intercross with each other, we
decided to just let the bamboos connect end to end and locked both ends of
the bamboos with mini bamboo pieces.

LIFE CYCLE
ANALYSIS

32 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413]

LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS

LCA of wooden pallet
Wooden packagaing materials such as crates and pallets are increasingly
used with the rise in global trade. Pallets are flat transport structures used in
the tranport packaging by almost all industries, including the shipping and
transportation of groceries, beverages, drums, chemicals, etc. In the shipping
industry, good and containers are strapped onto pallets and transported in
bulk units to move goods around easily in bulk units. Wooden pallets are
generally manufactured from hardwood and softwood sawn lumber material.
Pallets at the end of their life are typically dismantled and recycled or made
into other items. Table shown below is a general life cycle assessment of a
wooden pallet.

We recycled wooden pallets from different factories. Before we dismantle the

pallet, we sand the recycled pallet using sander machine to make it looks
clean and new. After that, we dismantled the smaller components of the
pallets to make the pallets into our desired sizes for the benches. We applied
a layer of chalet shellac onto the wooden pallets as finishing before we

From the table above shown that, the final industrial waste of a wooden pallet
is much lesser than plastic pallet and the raw material consumption of wooden
pallet is also less than the raw material consumption of plastic pallet. Besides
that, the most obvious advantage of wooden pallet is that pallets are a
renewable fuel, which is considered to be co2 neutral and thus not provide
any net contribution to the greenhouse effect.

34 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413]

Due to this, we decided to use the wooden pallet instead of plastic pallet to
make the benches of the garden despite the wooden pallet is not resistance to
water during rainy season. Therefore, we applied wood finishes which is
shellac to give a layer of protection to the benches made with wooden pallets.
Other than that, another reason for the decision is that wood is more durable
than plastic in terms of weight.

LCA of bamboo
Bamboo, like true wood, is a natural composite material with a high strengthto-weight ratio useful for structures. In its natural form, bamboo as a
construction material is traditionally associated with the cultures of South
Asia, East Asia and the South Pacific, to some extent in Central and South
America, and by extension in the aesthetic of Tiki culture. In China and India,
bamboo was used to hold up simple suspension bridges, either by making
cables of split bamboo or twisting whole culms of sufficiently pliable bamboo
together. Bamboo is often used in the construction industry because of its good
engineering properties and it is a feasible substitute for other materials for housing and
construction sector. Besides, bamboo has high tensile strength, it can be easily worked
upon by simple tools .It can also resist forces created by high velocity wind and
earthquake. Not only that, bamboos are eco friendly, energy efficient and cost effective.

The cutting of bamboo also does not give big impact to the environment as
bamboo is a fast growing species. Table shown below is a life cycle assessment of
bamboo on site.

Source : http://design490.org/bamboo-the-new-building-material/
From the comparison table shown above, overall bamboo has better
properties when compared to wood which is a quite similar material. Thus, we
decided to choose bamboo as the whole structure of the canopy of our
garden. First of all, bamboo is 100% recyclable material which can bring out
the message of sustainability. On top of that, as the structure of a canopy we
need strong materials that is safe to use therefore the use of bamboo is
suitable as it is resistant to termites and it can withstand strong wind.

PIE CHART (EXPENSES LIST)

Below shows the bar chart of our total expenses list in terms of cost of each
item and equipment. From the chart below it clearly shows that the
transportation of our installation from Taylors university to SJK(C) WahLian
costs the most, as the distance covered back and forth Sepang takes about 2
hour of drive. The chart continues following by the bamboo installations
(17%), Syelek (9%) and so on.

COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION
Throughout this project, we have a few individuals and community that we
would like to give our gratitude to for helping us achieve our goal in Sungai
Pelek, Sepang , Malaysia.

Taylors University Carpentry Workshop ( Mr Effendi )

In this project, we are blessed beyond expectations to have Mr.Effendi in
helping us out in solving and completing it. A random 2 hour session at the
workshop with him has turned to be a full week free-of-charge dedicated work
with Abang Effendi.
We faced a few problems while trying to get our design up to our
expectations. First, we had problems dismantling the palettes to smaller parts.
He gave us tools and taught us how to remove them parts by parts without
causing damages to the ourselves and also the
Palettes. We had problem making sure the palettes were smooth and would
not cause harm to the children. He provided us with plugged-in sanders and
taught us how to engage with them. To make sure the palettes could stand to
be stable, he participated in our discussion and gave us suggestions based
on his experiences. If it is not for Mr. Effendi, we would also have applied the
wrong coating to the palettes that would have caused further damages.
Next, we encountered a few problems with our bamboos due to the poor
workmanship and a lack of responsibility from the bamboo dealers. We were
trying to get them connected as a whole. First, he sponsored us with one
extra bamboo to be made into the fastening material of our bamboo
installation. He taught and helped us tie the fastening materials together to
make sure they stand still. He also helped smoothen up the bamboos so they
would not hurt the children at SJK(C) Wah Lian, Sepang. As we were
bothered by time constraints and a lack of experiences at time, Mr,Effendi
took away some of his time at work just to sort out our problems, making sure
we deliver safely at the right time.
All these work would not earn him a penny, yet he was willing to sacrifice his
time and materials just to get our work done. Frankly speaking if it is not for
Mr. Effendi, we would not have made it through this project. As a team, we
would like to thank Mr. Effendi for his contribution and passion in work for
guiding us through the thick and thin of this project.

USJ Tyre & Auto Car Service

Our design was to have palettes as our main idea, but we faced several
issues getting the right palettes. This was due to the fact that collected
palettes comprise of different sizes. Also the palettes we found were very
damaged and needed extra treatment that would cost us extra. But the
biggest encounter we had was that no offices or individuals were willing to
sponsor us with free palettes as they were either inconsiderate or that they
lack in palettes.
After strolling through high and low of USJ being rejected from one shop to
another, we came ourselves across a service centre where they had more
than enough palettes to offer. We approached them and explained our
difficulties in completing the project. All thanks to USJ Tyre & Auto Car
Service, we had our palette problem solved. The chairman was generous
enough to let us pick our palettes and gave it for us without any charge of
fees.

Sungai Pelek Community

Eventhough a small community you could finish strolling within 20 minutes ,
Sungai Pelek has a very warmth community. From getting directions to
offering, they have their best even if it was not enough , they gave it all
without asking anything in return. With that we would want to say, Thank You
Sungai Pelek.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We the team from Semester 2 Bachelor of Science (Honours) Taylors
University Lakeside Campus, would love to further extend our gratitude to all
the individuals and group of people who helped and supported us in
completing this project. We would also want to thank our beloved tutor, Ms.
Salvi for the lessons, advices and most importantly patients for the time and
tolerance she has given for us . We also express our sincere gratitude to our
families, friend, donors who contributed in every ways possible. Nonetheless,
we want to thank the Democratic Action Party of Sungai Pelek, for sponsoring
us for our entire project. Their selfless contribution towards the community of
SJK(C) Wah Lian economically is much appreciated as it has helped us solve
our income problems without any hesitation. With that, we too, sincerely
apologise for any troubles and inconvenience caused. Thank You,

CONCLUSION

48 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413]

Conclusion
In conclusion, we have deeply understood about sustainability and
Environmental-community. For the whole process and design, we are
encouraged and tried to use recycle material, and build it in a environmental
way. We considered what SJK ( C ) Wah Lian, Sepang needs, that is more
spaces for student to interact with each others. So, we have proposed a
interesting design, that is a few of recycle pallets benches and shelter that
made from bamboo.
We understand that while we doing this project, we might disturb and made
noisy at the primary school. We considered about the safety problems too.
So, we made all the preparation (completed benches, bamboos) at Taylors
workshop. After everything is done, we went there during the weekend and
install it right away. This can prevent student and teacher from being interrupt
and injured.
We have learnt a lot of skills in this meaningful project, that are problemsolving skill, time management and others. We have spent a lot of time and
efforts in this project, but we have earn a lot of priceless experiences.

FEEDBACK

50 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413]

FEEDBACK
1.Mr. Low (Principle of SJK ( C ) Wah Lian,Sepang )
I think the design is great, and it definitely benefits to the students. The Pallet
garden chair, that are made from recycle pallets are able to educate children
to use recycle material and build furniture in a more environmental way. The
bamboo shelter create a interesting spaces for student to relax and interact
with each other during the rest time. Beside that, thank you for considered
about the safety problem of the students and came to install during the
weekend.
2.Low Yong Ging
In this project, I have understood what sustainability means. With a
sustainable design, the design only can be used fully in a long term. In the
way to build the bamboo shelter and pallets chair, we faced some problems.
At last, with all the members cooperation and efforts, we solved all the
problems and got them done on time.
3.Edward Cheng
I have learned lots of practical skills that I have never thought before. I have
learned the ways to build furniture from a raw material and also the
importance of teamwork to make the project successful done on time. I am
really thankful to have the chance to carry out this assignment, I hope there is
more this kind of assignment in future.
3.Tan Kai Chong
I have experienced a project that work in a group of 10. I have understood
that teamwork is much important than everything. It is difficult to cooperate
and tolerate with each other in such a big team.
4.Ricky Wong
Overall, I am very happy to have a chance to take this ESD project. I am
proud of all my group members can finish this project on time. I had learnt that
safety is more important than everything, we considered the quality of the
material and make sure they are all in good condition.
5.Claire Zhuang
I have learned that there are a lot of things that need to aware of while
designing to a specific clients. We have to understand what they really need
and lack of. Besides, it is fun during the process as we get to do things
together. Yet, the most important thing is the feeling of happiness after
completing the work while watching how exciting the children are playing
around at that space.
6.Ee Xin Hua
I think that the most precious thing that I get throughout this project is the
happiness and satisfaction by helping people. The products that we have
done are just symbol or remarks that hope the children learned from the way
that we helping them and helping others in future.

only about understanding sustainable, environment and community but the
experience I got and the lesson that I have learnt.
8.Lim Pui Yee
For me, it is a great experience to help others while I still learn some technical
skills throughout this project. After finished this project what I realized it this
moral would actually passing down to the children at SJK ( C ) Wah Lian,
Sepang.
9.Carmen Chee
For me, I am very glad and thankful to have the chance to have such a great
teammates. We enjoy every moment we have had during this project. We
have well cooperation and tolerance during this project.
10.Nicole Hooi
I think this project give me a great opportunity to work in a group with my
classmates. I am very satisfying with the cooperation and the teamwork while
doing this project. What I learnt in this project is have a deep consideration
about the material for certain and the combination of each detail.

REFLECTION

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN [ARC 1413] 53

REFLECTION
We were not very sure of what we were going to expect throughout the
assignment when we first started. Our first task was to find a community and
sponsors for our project. We soon realized the task was not as easy as
stated in the brief. While doing this project, we have to communicate with
people that we never met before and have to convince them to help and
sponsor us. By doing this, weve learned to put ourselves out in the
community and be part of it. We have gone through many rejections by
different people and different ways, we were gutted at times, but we kept on
trying and finally we managed to convince the people we needed them to
help. By looking back, weve realized that how much courageous we had put
in this project in order to achieve what we wanted. Do not be afraid any
longer, but go on speaking and do not be silent, we told each other not to be
afraid but keep trying! We believed in what we were trying to achieve and do
for the better good.
We as a group experienced what is generally described as a
confidential background. However, we all adopted an open mind and were not
afraid to break our backs and feel the sting of sweat in our eyes. We carried
out a wide range of works, from searching the pallets and bamboos, cleaning,
foundations, installations to shellac the bamboos installations and pallets
chairs. Weve grown to realize the amount of hard work it requires to carry out
certain jobs and also learnt to appreciate the people in the community that
carry it out on a daily basis.
Throughout this project, we realized how strangers had noticed our
efforts and even supported our project. At first Democratic Action Party
considered should they sponsor us for this project but after he contacted with
the primary school headmaster, showed up and he realized that how much
efforts we had put in this project so he is willing to sponsor us more than the
amount we requested at the first place. We experienced the successful
moment and were very proud of all the members of this group. This kind of
moment couldnt be experienced by the others but just us.
Before the project, some of us have never learned to do simple jobs
such as gardening, painting, building and even cleaning the floors. We took it
as a chance to learn something new. Throughout the few weeks of work, we
as a group of friends have also grown to know each other better, and also to
tolerate each other better, to learn to give and take. At first there are few
arguments between the group members and also dissatisfied of each other
works. But we realized that group works are really important for this project
and also everyone had put in many efforts for this project so weve learned
how to tolerate.
We have all heard countless times of the environmental issues that
are afflicting our society, and after carrying out this assignment, we do
realized that these issues are something real, and they are happening all
around us such as depletion of resources and pollutions. We feel the entire
community as a whole is responsible to understand these problems and to
work together to eliminate them.
For the better good, as a group, we feel that we have laid one step forward
in helping out the society.
