Speaker Biographies

Clyde Hart, Baylor University, Director of Track & Field

After 42 years as Baylor's head track and field coach, Clyde Hart retired his position June 14, 2005, to become director of track and field. Hart's nearly five decades of leadership
has seen Baylor track and field reach monumental heights while earning a world-wide reputation as "Quarter-Miler U." His pupils have won an Olympic gold medal in six straight
Olympics (1996-2012) and at least two gold medals in five consecutive Olympic Games (2000-2012). In just the men's 400-meter event, Jeremy Wariner (2004) and Michael
Johnson (1996, 2000) captured Olympic gold in three straight Games. All-told, Hart has coached nine Olympians who have won a total of 13 Olympic gold medals, one silver and
three bronze with Johnson claiming five gold medals, Wariner and Sanya Richards-Ross three, and Darold Williamson and Reggie Witherspoon one each. From the time he took
over the program from his mentor, Jack Patterson, in 1963, through the 2013 season, Hart has coached 34 national champions (14 individual and 20 relay) and 545 All-America
performances -- 419 men's All-America honorees (131 individual and 288 relay) and 126 women's All-Americans (45 individual and 81 relay). His men's 4x400-meter relay
teams have earned outdoor All-America status in 24 of the last 25 years and captured 20 NCAA titles combined in indoors and outdoors. His 2004 4x400-meter relay team set a
then-NCAA indoor record with a 3:03.96 clocking and his 1997 unit set a then-World record at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships. All-told, Hart's teams have turned in 10
World-record performances (nine individual and one relay) and nine NCAA record efforts. In his final season as head coach at Baylor, he guided Williamson to his first-ever
individual national title in the final 400-meter race of his career at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Williamson also captured an unprecedented fourth straight Big 12 400meter title, anchored the Bears' to their eighth straight Big 12 4x400-meter relay crown both indoors and outdoors and anchored the squad to All-America performances at the
NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. The 2004 campaign was a career year, even by the legendary coach's standards. Wariner, then a sophomore, captured the gold medal
in the 400 meters, leading the United States to a 1-2-3 sweep at the Olympic Games in Athens. Wariner became the first quarter-miler in history to sweep the four major titles in
the event, including the U.S. Championship and the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor crowns. Later, Wariner would hand the baton to junior teammate Williamson as the Baylor duo
led the U.S. 4x400-meter relay to nearly a five-second victory for the gold medal. Wariner ran third and Williamson anchored all year as the duo led the Bears to the NCAA
Indoor title with a collegiate record time of 3:03.96 and completed an undefeated season in the relay with the NCAA Outdoor championship. The 4x400-meter relay has a 20-year
streak of All-America finishes and has produced 15 national titles (one women's) under Hart's leadership since 1985. Hart was named the 2004 Nike Coach of the Year and was
inducted to the Baylor Wall of Honor, the highest award bestowed upon Baylor letterwinners. Former pupil Michael Johnson was inducted into the United States Track & Field
Hall of Fame and his 200-meter performance at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta was deemed the greatest track and field moment in the last 25 years by USATF. Wariner was
honored as the Mondo National and Regional Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, while Williamson was named Big 12 Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. Those
accomplishments are just a few in a long list by Hart, a coach widely regarded as one of the best in the country. Selected as USA Track & Field's 2004 and 2006 Nike Coach of
the Year, Hart is a member of the Baylor Wall of Honor, the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, the USA Track & Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of
Fame and the Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame. He served as an assistant coach on the United States' 2000 Olympic team and was named the U.S. Olympic Committee's National
Track & Field Coach of the Year in 1996, 2004 and 2006.

Jarius Cooper, Arkansas State University, Asst. Coach

Jarius Cooper begins his third year as an assistant coach in the 2014-15 season with the Arkansas State University track and field program. Cooper, who began his current duties
in September 2012, is responsible for coaching the A-State sprints, hurdles, and relays along with serving as the Red Wolves' recruiting coordinator. "I'm very passionate about
coaching the sprints and hurdles events," said Cooper. "I just want to continue being a student of the sport and learn as much as possible." In 2014, Cooper worked with senior
Justin Whitfield, who set an A-State school record in the men's 60-meter indoors with a time of 6.77. Whitfield, along with senior Raymond Jackson both ran all-time personal
bests in the 100 meters with times of 10.20 and 10.38, respectively. Cooper was also instrumental in the development of senior hurdler Sharika Nelvis, who achieved two U.S.
Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) First-Team All-America honors by winning national titles in both the 2014 NCAA Division I indoor 60meter hurdles (7.93) and the outdoor 100-meter hurdles (12.52w) events. On track to capturing her national titles, Nelvis won seven individual SBC Championships. Nelvis
etched her name in the A-State and SBC record books along with becoming the Sun Belt Conference Female Athlete of the Year, Honda Sport Award winner in track, and a
USTFCCCA The Bowerman Trophy finalist. In the 2012-13 season, Cooper coached three Red Wolves to conference individual champion titles. During the indoor campaign, he
coached two Sun Belt Conference Champions - Justin Whitfield in the 55-meter dash and Sharika Nelvis in the 55-meter dash, 55-meter hurdles, and 200-meter dash. In the
outdoor season, Cooper helped Solomon Williams become conference champion in the 110-meter hurdles while Nelvis continued to dominate the sprints by winning the 100meters, 100-meter hurdles, and 200-meters. Williams would go on to earn All-America Second-Team honors by sprinting 13.80 in the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries at the
NCAA Division I Championships while Nelvis posted a career-best 12.84 time in the prelims to receive All-America First-Team laurels before taking sixth place in the national
finals. Prior to A-State, Cooper spent 2011-12 as an assistant coach at his prep alma mater Flagler Palm Coast High School in Palm Coast, Fla. His coaching areas of
responsibility for the program included sprints, hurdles, and relays. Cooper coached several of the school's athletes to the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) 4A
State Meet such as Kadeem Williams in the 300-intermediate hurdles and the girl's 4x400-meter relay team. A four-year track letterwinner (2007-11) at the University of Florida,
Cooper earned Southeastern Conference (SEC) All-Academic Team honors in each of his four seasons (2007-11). He placed fourth for the Gators in the 110-meter hurdles at the
2010 SEC Outdoor Championships and then followed with a third-place showing in the 60-meter hurdles at the 2011 SEC Indoor Championships. Cooper graduated from the
University of Florida in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in criminology. A 2007 graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School, Cooper attained 2007 FHSAA 4A State Champion
laurels in the 110-meter high hurdles (13.97 time) and was a member of the 2007 FHSAA 4A Boys Team champions. The four-year letterwinner (2007-11) capped his 2007
senior year by not only earning all-state plaudits, but garnering distinction as the state's top-ranked 110-meter hurdler and also clocked an event time which placed him amongst
the nation's top-25 performers. In 2007, Cooper claimed All-America prep accolades in the sprint medley and gained All-America status in the outdoor 110-meter high
hurdles. A three-year (2005-07) team captain, Cooper graduated from FPCHS as the record holder in the 110-meter hurdles (13.85) and 300-meter hurdles (38.34). Cooper
completed his masters in sport administration from Arkansas State in 2014. He is an United States Track and Field (USATF) Level 1 certified instructor.
