Steps for creating a Helical Gear

1) Make an extrude for the gear blank.

2) Go to Tools Parameters from the main menu. Create the input parameters and enter
the values as shown below using the add button.

3) Go to Tools Relations from the main menu and enter the relations.

4) Create three circles for Outer diameter, Base diameter and Pitch diameter using sketch
and name them as shown below in the model tree. Relate the dimensions to the
respective sketches.

5) Create a new coordinate system at the center of the gear blank using the datums and
the front face. Name it GEAR_CSYS for reference purpose. Make sure that the Z
direction points outside, X horizontally and Y vertically.

6) Now the involute curve has to be created. Go to Model Datum Curve Curve
from Equation. Select GEAR_CSYS as reference coordinate system. Click on
Equation and enter the equations in the text window as shown below.

7) Create a sketch for transverse_tooth_thickness at

pitch diameter from the intersection point of
involute curve and Pitch diameter and relate the
dimension to the parameter. Create a new point at
the center of this curve using datum point option.

8) Create a new datum using the point created in step 9 and the center axis of the gear as
shown in the image. This will be used to mirror the involute curve.

9) Mirror the involute curve using the datum created in step 10.

10) The helical path (helicoid) has to be created now through which the teeth section will
sweep. To do that, go to Model Sweep Helical Sweep. Click Surface icon in the
feature dash board. Select the datum created in step 10 as the sketching plane for this.
For sweep profile, draw a line from the start face to the end face using references.
Make sure that the start point is from the face where you modeled the transverse
section. Draw the center line. When done, click ok and come out of the sketcher.
When asked for pitch, type lead in the input area.
To define the section, draw a line from the circle center to the center line of the gear.
Complete the helical sweep feature.

11) To sweep the transverse gear tooth section along the helical path, select the Sweep
option under Model tab. Pick the outer edge of helicoid as trajectory and select solid
and the other options as shown below.

12) To draw the section, select the sketch icon. Use Project
option to add the edges of the features and Arc option for
Outer diameter and Root diameter. Trim all other entities
except for the teeth section.

13) Create the chamfer and radius.

14) Group the variable section sweep, radius and the chamfer in model tree.

15) Pattern this group using the center axis of the gear. 36 teeth for 360 degrees.

16) Add center hole and chamfer. Hide the curves, surfaces etc.
