U P C H E M I C A L E N GIN E E R IN G S OCIETY, INC.

Halfway through the 20th century,

fourteen pioneering chemical
engineering students shared
a vision of service for the
students and the faculty of the
then established Department of
Chemical Engineering. On August
26, 1954, UP KEM Engineers was
formally established and, in 2003,
the Securities and Exchange
Commission registered UP KEM
Engineers as a non-stock, non-profit
corporation under the new name
UP Chemical Engineering Society,
Incorporated.
In order to involve its members
in large-scale activities, and at
the same time build stronger ties
among chemical engineering and
chemistry students all over Metro
Manila and Luzon, the organization
became an affiliate of the Philippine
Institute of Chemical Engineers
Junior Chapter Luzon (PIChE JCL)
and the Philippine Association of
Chemistry Students (PACS) in 1983
and 2007, respectively.

As an organization recognized both

by the National Youth Commission
and the University, UP Chemical
Engineering Society, Incorporated
(UP KEM) has proven itself to be
a top-notch organization capable
of organizing large-scale events.
The Students National Chemical
Engineering Conference, the
flagship event of the organization,
is held in celebration of the
organizations anniversary. sNCEC
has five sub-projects National
Chemical Engineering Symposium,
Students Chemical Engineering
Networking Event, Inter-University
Chemical Engineering Quiz Show,
sNCEC Research Grant, and
Chemical Engineering Campus
Challenge Series.

KEM carries on its consistent
tradition of academic excellence
and holistic development. As it
celebrates its 60th anniversary of
foundation this August 2014, UP
KEM continues to grow leaders,
stimulate young minds, fuel
ambitions, pursue excellence,
and promote professionalism,
integrity, and holistic development
among its members, the college,

engineers in the different chemical

process industries. sNCEC 2012
was awarded the Best Academic/
Research Development Project by
the Philippine Institute of Chemical
Engineers Junior Chapter Luzon.
With more than 600 participants
nationwide, sNCEC reached
greater heights last year. NaChES
was revamped by introducing
the first Parallel Sessions wherein
discussions and workshops on five
sub-topics of the Phenomenon of
Catalysis occurred simultaneously.
A new sub-project was also
introduced that year called the
sNCEC Research Grant (ReGrant).
This project aims to motivate

minds, and foster knowledge

among the chemical engineering
students nationwide. Now on its
5th year, NaChES will explore the
field of energy generation. In this
symposium, Parallel Sessions will
take place wherein discussions
and comprehensive workshops
on five sub-topics geothermal,
wind and hydropower, petroleumbased, and coal-powered will
occur simultaneously. At the same
time, the sNCEC ReGrant Thesis
Colloquium will take place and to
culminate the first day of sNCEC,
SCENE will be held in the evening.
The newest addition to this years
sNCEC is the Chemical Engineering
Campus Challenge Series which

students to continue expanding the

research and development in the
field of chemical engineering. The
sNCEC 2013 was awarded the Best

aims to promote the application and

appreciation of the fundamental
courses in Chemical Engineering in
an interactive approach. Teams will
make their way through challenges
stationed all over the UP Diliman
campus, completing as many as
they can in a limited amount of
time. To conclude sNCEC, Inter-U,
a chemical engineering quiz show,
will be held.

In 2011, the NCEC was renamed to

sNCEC. Reaching 500 participants,
sNCEC became nationwide as
participants from Visayas and
Mindanao joined the conference.
The topic then was Chemical
Engineering in Biotechnology.
In 2012, Food Engineering was
discussed during NaChES.
Workshops on making process flow
diagrams for food processing were
done to appreciate the paradigm
of chemical engineering applied in
other fields. During that year, a new
sub-project was added to the lineup of sNCEC, the very first Students
Chemical Engineering Networking
Event (SCENE). SCENE aims to
bring chemical engineering students
and company representatives

ENERGY ENGINEERING 101

NaChES started as one of the two sub-events of the

Students National Chemical Engineering Conference
(formerly NCEC) in 2010. Now on its 5th year, NaChES
will explore the field of energy generation in the
Philippines. The program is divided into two-parts:
the morning session and the afternoon session. The
morning session includes talks on the state of energy
production in the country, as well as the research
and development in the energy sector. During the
discussion, career options for chemical engineers in
the said field will be presented.

Energy engineering is concerned with the production

of energy from a variety of sources, from fossil fuels to
water and solar power.

The afternoon session will serve as an appreciation

course of the different sources of energy, renewable
and nonrenewable, used today. Participants
from the morning session will be enrolled into
five classes divided into two sub-topics. The
Renewable+Alternative (RenAlt) Clause includes the
Geothermal, Biomass, and Wind-Hydropower classes.
The Fossil Fuel (FF) Clause includes Coal-Powered
and Petroleum-based classes.
Workshops will begin with a challenge for the
participants to apply their recently-acquired
knowledge and critical thinking. Their works will be
assessed by a select group of judges, and the top
group per workshop will be awarded at the end of the
symposium. Their works will also be uploaded online
in the official sNCEC page.

Energy engineers are tasked with the improvement

of existing modes of energy generation, by boosting
efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
They also research for renewable and sustainable
means of creating energy.

ENERGY FACTS
1.

The world has been using oil, natural gas, and

coal as primary energy sources, but the use of
alternative sources (nuclear, hydro, biofuels) has
increased over the years.

2.

According to the Department of Energy, the

top 3 energy sources of the Philippines are oil,
geothermal, and coal.

3.

Power is harnessed from the wind and flowing

water using a turbine, a rotary engine acting on
the fluids pressure differences to create energy.

4.

Wood, corn, and garbage are now being used

to produce energy. These sources are called
biomass. Converted to liquid, they produce
biofuels.

Popular Chemical Engineering Career

Specializations*
Biochemical
Biochemical engineers bridge the gap between
the theoretical aspects of biology and the
practical applications of engineering to introduce
products and processes that benefit society.
Engineers of this specialization were at the
forefront of overcoming historys most devastating
biomedical challenges such as HIV, AIDS, and
cancer.
Food
Food engineers are challenged to innovate in
order to produce safe, tasty and nutritious food
products which can be sustained and even
improved over time. Aside from food production,
these engineers are also responsible for the
different stages in the food production chain such
as its handling, packaging and storing in order
preserve the food items quality.

Petroleum and Energy

Petroleum Engineering concerns itself with
the development, production and distribution
of petroleum as it is currently one of the most
common sources of energy used in the world.
Engineers of this specialization design processes
to extract oil and other gas deposits deep within
the earth. They are responsible for coming up
with methods to discover and further develop
renewable energy resources and are capable
of transforming energy-heavy systems into
environmentally-friendly ones.
Process Control
Most industries apply this principle of process
control through mass production. Though
methods of process control vary among different
industrial fields, all engineers that specialize in
this field are in-charge of ensuring the consistent
and acceptable production of output for a given
industrial process. Not only do these engineers
ensure a consistent system, they also find ways to
improve the production.
Pharmaceuticals
Engineers combine aspects from many fields
in science and engineering such as Chemistry,
Biology , Chemical and Biochemical engineering
in order to contribute to the creation and
development of pharmaceutical products. Studies
regarding the efficiency in mass-production of
new drugs are spearheaded by them as well.
Production
Production engineers supervise the whole of an
industrys manufacturing process. Closely related
to process control, engineers who specialize in
this field are tasked to optimize the production
system as a whole.

the house
printers
The House Printers Corporation is a family
owned company where owners value the
customers needs, creditors trust and
workers welfare to the highest degree.
We are engage in producing high quality
printed materilsa such as coffeetable
books, magazines, calendars, annual
reports and other promotional materials
for our customers using state-of-the-art
facilities complimented with highly trained
and reliable workforce committed to on
time delivery of products and services.
We envisioned our company to be geared
up in meeting local and global challenges
providing highest quality of printing
services using the newest technology in
the internet.

THIS PRIMER IS COURTESY OF MIGUEL SAN JUAN

The House Printers Corporation was conceived in 1969

as a simple proprietorship company with one unit of
Minerva letterpress machine, one unit of manual cutter,
5 sets of letterpress fonts, one operator for Minerva
and a lot of heart and optimism. Initially the plant was
located in the dirty kitchen of the owners residence and
the raw materials were stored in the garage.
The first job of this printing shop was the tickets of a
mini-bus company which operate from Taytay-Divisoria.
Then came jobs from the alma mater of the owners.
Through hard work and determination, there were
always ample jobs for the presses and the necessity
to expand was always present. First an Automatic
Letterpress machine (V-50) was acquired, then another
Minerva was added.
After 2 years of operations, the need to branch out to
offset printing was always considered but due to the
fact that the capital requirements of setting up a new
offset machine was stiff, the company decided to trade
in one of the Minerva Letterpress machine and bought
a secondhand Harris Offset machine. Although it took
a lot of headaches to operate the machine, it gave the
company an insight towards offset technology and
furthermore, the company was obliged to apply for a
3-phase electrical supply from Meralco.
Further expansion of clientele base was initiated
with the advent and operation of the old offset and
decision was reached after a lot of deliberation to
purchase a major machine for the company. The fact
that the financial base of the company was still weak, a
Heidelberg KSBA was negotiated from PHILPRINT and
was delivered in 1973.

In 1973 the company was incorporated and the first

real step toward full offset press operations was
initiated using brand new machineries. The first
acquisition towards this direction was the trade in of the
Heidelberg KSBA for a Heidelberg KORD. Later another
Heidelberg GTO was purchased trading in the V-50.
This Heidelberg GTO was later traded in for another
Heidelberg KORD.
During this time of expansion, we started to cater our
services to the top corporations that up to the present
still are part of our operations. The marketing strategy
was to get one client who are leaders in their line of
business such as Dutch Boy for paints, RFM for flour,
SMC-Magnolia for ice cream, Purefoods for canned
food products, Levis for garments, Nestle for their
promotional items, etc.
Before the decline of our economy, our company was
able to change most of the previous equipment to 2
color offset machineries and these gave us ample
leverage to weather the economic crisis that gripped
our nation.
Today, THE HOUSE PRINTERS CORPORATION is
well-known for its quality and reliability. This standard
was further enhanced by continuous training of its staff,
supported by the latest Heidelberg offset machines
from pre-press to post press.
