Business Card
Description: Business card with a self designed logo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I started by using Adobe Illustrator to create

my logo. I used the ellipse tool and pen tool to create the light bulb. I then used text
and changed the color of Art to a red color to help it really stand out. I next opened
Adobe InDesign and opened a 8.511 page document. On the page I made a box
that was 2x3.5 inches. After I placed a bigger version of my logo right against the
edge I erased the corners to make the light bulb the edge of the business card. I
then copied the card and flipped it and erased the center. I placed a smaller logo in
the lefthand corner and another watermark of the lightbulb in the lower right hand
corner. I then placed the information in the lower right corner as well. Programs/Tools
used: Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.

Message: SmArt is a made up industrial design company focused on helping

companies make their products more visual appealing. I felt the simple yet unique
design of the lightbulb helped with the idea that they are a creative company full of
original ideas to help their product simple, productive, and yet still visual appealing.

Audience: Anyone who might want to help their product become more visual
appealing.

Top Thing Learned: How to brand things like business cards and letterheads with a
logo.

Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic and Red.

Event Flier

Description: A full-bleed color event flier to promote an activity for Perkins and
Lamprect hall.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I opened a Adobe Illustrator document and

added a background color of a light blue. I then found an image of ice and then
snow, adjusted the opacity of both and placed them on top of eachother on top of
the background color. Using the elipse tool and the pen tool I created the
snowflake duplicated them and adjusted the opacity on each to help lead the eye
through the design and not ditract from the text. I next added the text, adjusted the
font, size, and placement to be most balanced and to help the flow. Programs used:
Adobe Illustrator.

Message: We are holding a formal dance for Perkins and Lamprict hall on campus
with a winter wonderland theme. I tried to create a fun and light, yet still formal
design by having more rounded and cute snowflakes but a script font for the title of
the flier.

Audience: Residents or staff of Perkins or Lamprict hall, or their dates.

Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic Blue
Top Thing Learned: How to appeal to a wide audience.

Letterhead
Description: A letterhead with a self designed logo.

For the page I turned it into a
letterhead. I placed my logo in the top left hand corner and added the line
underneath it with line tool. I added the contact information to the right hand corner
and adjusted the size to make it readable but still smaller than the logo. I next added
a water mark of the lightbulb. After I placed it I adjusted the opacity to 15%. I finished
the letterhead with another line done with the line tool that matched the one at the
top. Programs/Tools used: Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.

Message: SmArt is a made up industrial design company focused on helping

companies make their products more visual appealing. I felt the simple yet unique
design of the lightbulb helped with the idea that they are a creative company full of

Event Ad

Description: A full-bleed color event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft

Word and a scanner.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I scanned the image of the typewriter and
opened it in a word document. I used a triadic color scheme and placed a violet and
gold colored box. I then placed the white lines and added the text. I place a textured
box over each color box and set the transparency to where you could just barely see
the texture. I used Microsoft Word, an Epson Scanner, and the PDF2JPG.net PDF
converter.

Message: I am running a silent auction for antiques to raise money for the local art
education program. I wanted to interest my audience in the auction or to at least know
someone who might be so they could pass the word along to them.

Audience: Anyone in or around the community who might be interested or know

someone who might be interested in antiques and in helping the communitys art
program.

Color scheme and color names: Triadic Teal, Violet, Gold

Photodesign

Description: To create a poster using an original photo I took with a color palate
and color scheme to demonstrate skills learned.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I formulated a plan for the project and chose
a color monochromatic scheme based on the sweater I was using. I decided on an
empty room wall for my background set up the camera on a timer and took the self
portrait. I imported the photo into photoshop and adjusted it using levels,
sharpness, saturation, and color balance. I then designed a 8.511 layout with the
photo, text, and color theme. I used color swatches in different shades of brick and
kept the whole design monochromatic.

Message: A Freudian slip is a psychology term that refers to unintentional slip of

the tongue where you say what you were actually thinking when you did not originally
intend to. I thought the picture explains this idea perfectly and wanted to
demonstrate this to the audience. I wanted to incorporate the idea of Freudian slips
with the a fun attractive design.

Audience: Those who might have had problems with Freudian slips in the past.
Top Thing Learned: I learned how to pick a color scheme and then plan a photo
shoot around that design and color scheme.

Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic Brick

Flier

Description: Black and White flier to advertise a graduate leadership conference.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I started by sketching a few different designs on
paper and then chose my favorite to start designing. In InDesign I laid the basic shape
by creating the gray boxes and turning them 45 degrees. I next created the title with
a sans serif font in three different text boxes making the G the largest letter to catch
peoples attention. I then added the picture and lined it up with the edge of one of the
gray boxes I then added the remaining text, bolded the question, and ended by putting
the logo in the corner of the page. I was given the text, picture, and logo to work with.
Message: I would like to reach recent or soon to be graduates who are looking for a
way to get a competitive edge in their future business career.

Audience: Recent or soon to be graduates ages 20-30.

Top Thing Learned: I really learned how to use the InDesign program. I previously
never had a chance to work with this program.

Brochure
Description: A two sided folding brochure.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I started with developing my body copy. I

decided on my topic and wrote the body text that would be inside. I next used Adobe
Illustrator to create my logo. To create the logo I used the pen tool to create the
shape for the wheat kernel, adjusted the color and added a gradient. I then
duplicated this shape and arranged it into the shape of a wheat stock. I finished the
logo with the pen tool to create the stem.
I then moved over to InDesign to create the basic layout. Using my sketches of the
brochure I measured out the shape and placement of the folds on the brochure.
I created the curves of the brochure with the pen tool. I also used the pen tool to
create the solid colored backgrounds. I copied in my body copy text and arranged
it through out the brochure. I placed my logo from Adobe Illustrator in the design.
Using the line tool I placed the indigo and white lines throughout the design.
I chose images of food that expressed the idea that there are still several delicious
options for those eating gluten-free and also of the grains they can no longer
consume. Any needed adjustments to the images I adjusted in Adobe Photoshop
using the quick selection tool. I finished with placing the images throughout the
brochure design. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator/ Adobe Photoshop/ Adobe
InDesign.

Message: A brochure with information for those new to a gluten-free diet with tips,
hints, and resources to more information.

Audience: Those who are new to a gluten-free diet.

Top Thing Learned: How to measure and align a brochure design out and then
transfer it to InDesign.

Color scheme and color names: Complementary, Gold and Indigo.

Montage

Description: An spiritual montage based off of a quote by Neal A. Maxwell, made

by blending four different images and two different fonts.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): I filled an

8.511 background with a solid brick color and then added the background image
over that and adjusted the opacity to let the brick show through partially. I then
added a texture over the top of that and also adjusted the opacity to see the image
beneath. I added the three photos of the different clocks and hour glass, added
masks to each one, and used a black brush at different opacities to blend the edges
of each photo into the background. I added two contrasting fonts for the quote and
name and used a white font color to help it stand out from the background. I used
Adobe Photoshop.

Message: I really wanted to convey my message to my audience of how our faith

in God includes faith in His timing. Whether it is in watching the time slowly tick by, or
surprising us like an alarm clock, or even flowing so quickly through our fingers like
the sand in an hour glass, I wanted to capture what a large part of our faith has to
include His timing for it all.

Audience: Those who have either been faced with this side of faith or those going
through a struggle of having faith in His timing.

Top Thing Learned: How to blend photos using masks.

Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied: I adjusted the saturation
of the background photo to make it a little more washed out.

Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic and Brick.

Web Page

Description: A webpage to showcase my original logo design.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I created this web page using only
TextWrangler. I never realized that you could create a website with a simply text
editing program. After I learned how to use the program by experimenting a lot I
was able to enjoy myself. I first made an html with all of my content and inserted
my logo image that I adjusted in Adobe Illustrator to the proper format for web
and to adjust the size. I was then able to double check my html using the HTML
validator at http://www.W3.org. It was interesting to see how it could check the
document to make sure that I had not made a mistake in the coding. I then
attached a pre-made css document to my html document and then adjusted the
css to work better with my logo. I changed the fonts to Abadi MT Condensed
Extra Bold and Times New Roman and added back-up fonts just in case the
browser couldnt find the first ones listed. I matched the background color of the
website to the color in my logo and inserted the hexadecimal color codes into my
css. I added padding, margins, a list style, and effects to the weblink. Programs/
Tools Used: TextWrangler, Illustrator, & Photoshop

Message: My message is that those who want their design to become more
visual appealing and artistic, but still useful can come to my company SmArt for
help.

Audience: Anyone interested in useful but artistic designs.

Top Thing Learned: How to use html and css.
Color scheme and color hex(s): Monochromatic: Red #a0001e, White #ffffff,
Black #000000

added borders and changed the color of the web link and added a hover color to
the web link. I also moved the image to the center of the page.

Event Flier

Description: A full-bleed color event ad to promote a early morning activity for

Perkins hall using only Microsoft Word.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I opemed a Word document and added a

background layer of black. I then decided on a triadic color scheme and found an
image that had two of the three colors I wanted to use. I added the photo and put
a couple filters over the image to help the colors pop. I next added the teal box and
adjusted the opacity. I added the black box and again adjusted the opacity. I added
the text and adjusted the colors. For the body text I used the eyedropper tool to
match the light color at the bottom of the photo.

Message: We are holding an early morning walk up to the Rexburg ID temple. I

tried to creat flier that would stand out and really pop. I wanted the viewers to be
drawn to the image and then for their eyes to flow from the title down through the
information.

Audience: Residents or staff of Perkins hall.
