KEYNOTE ADDRESS - 2012 SAFETY AMBASSADOR OF

THE YEAR
JACINTA MACAULAY, SOUTHERN REGION RTW
& REHABILITATION MANAGER- RETAIL, LINFOX
LOGISTICS

Good morning Rex, Ladies and Gentleman.

Thank you for the opportunity today to share with
you my passion for workplace health and safety.
I am fortunate enough to be employed in a career
where every day my actions ensure that a familys
loved ones return home safely after completing a
hard days work.
As the 2012 Safe Work Australia Safety
Ambassador, I continued my safety journey from
Ron Finemore Transport in Wodonga, and moved
to Melbourne to take up a position with Linfox.
The transportation industry sector has significant
health and safety challenges so I know I am in the
right place to continue making a difference.

I know firsthand how Safe Work Australias

strategic directions for supply chains and
networks has assisted Linfox and how it will
continue to improve the transport and storage
industry.
This is my 8th year of employment in the transport
industry which started at Border Express. Safety in
any industry is paramount. Within transport,
safety underpins everything we do. Our trucks
and the products they carry touch every
community and every family.
This has been made more pertinent by the recent
events in our industry. I am proud to have been
associated with industry leaders that benchmark
best practice safety in this area.
While I was at Ron Finemore Transport, we
completed the retro fit of the fuel and grain
tanker non slip step covers. Since this
implementation, I am proud to report a reduction
in falls & slips from tanker ladders of 100% to
zero.

The coupling aid project has continued with

distribution to drivers as PPE resulting in
equipment that has now become industry
standard and other transport companies have
adopted a similar process.
In my absence he has continued my legacy with
unwavering commitment to safety as the impact
of being the recipient of this award on Ron
Finemore Transport has assisted in changing the
culture of a regional based transport company.
Integrating a safety culture that is embraced at all
levels of a business is a difficult challenge but one
that has been achieved at Linfox Logistics. This is
an organisation which is proactive in creating and
maintaining a positive safety culture.
Safety should be a priority and is important for all
companies and safety is the cornerstone of Linfox
operations in 10 countries across Asia Pacific.
Linfox Asia Pacific Operations involve:

Over 20,000 FTE jobs contributing 53 million

hours of work
5,000 vehicles/750 million KM of driving per
year
4.2m square meters of warehousing
$53 billion of stock
Control rooms monitoring our fleet
operations 24/7.
At Linfox, everything starts with safety. The
safety of our people, customers & communities in
which we operate are our No 1 priorities.
We integrate this commitment into our daily
business activities in the following manner:
Safety is led from the top
Safety is 1st on all meeting agendas from the
board to our worksites
Our managers walk & talk safety everyday
on all our worksites
Tool box meetings focus on safety every week
Safety leadership journals are completed

Every serious injury, lost time injury and

motor vehicle incident is reported directly to
the CEO immediately & to Senior Leaders.
Our safety mission statement at Linfox is Vision
Zero. We began our safety Vision Zero 8 years ago
because
We care about people
We want everyone to go home safely after
work every day
Vision Zero is communicated widely across the
business so all employees are aware of what we
are striving to achieve which is:
1. Zero fatalities
2. Zero injuries
3. Zero motor vehicle incidents
4. Zero net environmental emissions
5. Zero tolerance of unsafe behaviour &
practices

Linfox implemented an extensive safety

management system which resulted in our LTIFR
decreasing from 20.7 in 2006 to 1.5 now.
This reduction is a reflection of the focus the
organisation has placed on safety & the
importance given to reducing the impact of
workplace injury through prevention.
We will continue working in this area and have a
goal to improve safety performance by 30% each
year through leadership, behaviour and systems
that are consistent with industry standards.
The success we have had at Linfox in the safety
arena can be attributed to how well we
communicate safety messages. Vision zero is
prominent across our organisation.
Every Linfox site displays its safety
performance
The Vision Zero logo is prominent on
uniforms, letterheads & signage
Our safety theme is written throughout or
communications to employees & customers

We produce our safety resources material in 7

languages
We are very proud of our Linfox fleet of vehicles
traversing the roads with the distinctive red &
yellow branded tucks emblazoned with Lindsay
Foxs famous quote you are passing another
FOX.
You can take comfort that this fleet on average is
only 3 years old with repairs & maintenance
carried out by Linfox accredited mechanics who
maintain meticulous R & M records for very
vehicle. Vehicles are fitted with GPS tracking
devices to monitor

Speed
Distance travelled
Harsh braking
Location
Engine data
Fatigue management

At Linfox, we understand that you can never be

complacent when it comes to safety.

If it ain't broke, dont fix it, is the slogan of the

complacent, the arrogant or the scared. Its an
excuse for inaction, a call to non-arms - Colin
Powell.
At Linfox, we understand that safety must remain
in the front of mind for all our people, not just the
safety professionals.
We believe that everyone that comes to work at
Linfox deserves to go home safely. The message is
shared as is the responsibility of each employee to
identify their vision zero and what safety means
to them.
Collectively, we look out for each other in our
workplaces across Asia Pacific.
In conclusion, safety is a job that never ceases.
There will always be a need for people who are
committed & passionate about making a
difference; those who are able to identify
solutions & opportunities to make workplaces
safer for all Australians.

Organisations such as Safe Work Australia assist

us as safety professionals by providing us with the
current knowledge & resources to carry out our
safety roles.
My colleagues and I at Linfox will continue to
assist Safe Work Australia with their strategic
objectives by striving to be industry leaders who
champion work health & safety in supply chains &
networks.
I wish the 2013 Safety Ambassador of the year all
the best and congratulate the winner on their
achievement.
Thank you.
