Welcome to this fun project creating a miniature book based on the Christmas story “The Snowman” ~ it doesn’t have to be the Snowman, it could be any story and any colour, maybe “The Night Before Christmas” or “Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer “ or perhaps the “Nutcracker Suite” or may be all of them. Materials Matchbox * Mid blue or dark blue paper (heavy paper or lightweight card) White paper (heavy paper or lightweight card) White tissue Paper Tacky or PVA glue White acrylic paint Trimmings of choice** Fine snow glitter White or silver fine tipped pen * internet search engines can be used to find a matchbox template, alternatively can use adie cut- ting machine ifn0 matchbox is ovailable ** white or silver pee! offs, white lace, bunko, ribbon, stick on jewels are just some ofthe pieces suitable for trimming the outside of the book. Put the inner to one side and with the outside casing remove one short side. 2. Take the blue lightweight card and measure the inner back and sides and top of the box, for your individual matchbox. Cut out the shape shown, score along the lines and then, glue into the box. Sl ke Note: can leave a bit extra on top and sides to wrap round the edge of the box. 7 Score 3. Using the white card or paper, cut a similar shape only this time the back, bottom and sides and about 3/4inch tall. ‘Then cut a wavy type line along top edge to create the snow scene, this could be any style you choose. Side] ack | Side| Glue this into the bottom of the box, do not worry if there \ are gaps showing in the white the next stage will cover a score these up. 4, Shred a small amount of white tissue paper and with the tacky or PVA glue scrunch some tiny pieces into the bottom of the box to create a snow like landscape a cocktail stick will aid doing this fiddly job. Leave to dry. 5. From the white card cut out some Christmas trees freehand, or you can use the templates shown or alternatively a small tree punch. ‘When you have a selection try placing them in the scene to make a pleasing arrangement, when happy glue in. Leave to dry. 6.When dry, use acrylic white paint on tissue paper, use a fine brush or cocktail stick tip to add snow or stars to the blue sky. Leave to dry. 7. Take the outer casing of the matchbox and cover using the blue paper—see step by step photos below—allow a 3/8 inch border for turning . CS 8. Cut a piece of blue paper asa liner for the left hand inside of the ‘book’ - making sure enough of the paper will cover part of the inner ‘spine’, 9. The front of the book and spine can now be decorated, the one shown used snowflake peel-offs, white pen and snow glit- ter. 10. The inside of the matchbox has snow glitter added to the stars, parts of the trees and snow or add other trim as desired Leave to dry. 11. To neaten the sides, top and bottom of the box, cut a piece of white paper long enough to go round all the sides and as wide as the box depth. Glue neatly on the outside of the box with the join or overlap on the spine side of the ‘book’ 12, To assemble use tacky or PVA glue on the back of the box and on the inside of the ‘spine’. Press the outer back and side ‘onto the inner ‘book’; you may need to weigh down the book until dry. 13. Once dry open up the box to show the cover and the inside scene, you can now add a snowman or decorative piece of choice to the inside. To make a Snowman White Pompoms - 2.x 6mm and 1x 5mm diameter or similar sizes Piece of 2mm silk ribbon or thread for scarf Black Imm no-hole beads Black card or thin felt for hat Tiny scrap of orange reindeer moss for nose (alternatively paint the tip of a cocktail stick orange and when dry snip to required length) To Make Take the two 6mm pompoms and snip one side on each to make a bit flatter and then glue together along the flat edge. Do the same with the smaller pompom and glue to the top. Leave to dry. When dry take a piece of ribbon or thick thread to form a scarf round the neck. Form a hat out of black card or thin felt and put on the top; add no-hole beads for eyes and buttons. Use a scrap of orange reindeer moss or end of cocktail stick for nose and any other trims you choose.
