Mogadishu, December 15, 2014 A formal farewell ceremony was held today in
Mogadishu for the outgoing AMISOM Force Commander Lieutenant General Silas
Ntigurirwa, who has concluded his tour of duty.
Gen. Ntigurirwa, who is from Burundi, was seen off by the Special Representative of
the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia and Head of
AMISOM, Ambassador Maman S. Sidikou, Special Representative of the UN
Secretary-General for Somalia Nicholas Kay, AMISOM Police Commissioner Anand
Pillay as well as senior AMISOM commanders from Uganda, Ethiopia and other
countries with individual support staff at the AMISOM Force headquarters.
Lt. Gen. Silas was appointed AMISOM Force Commander on December 16, 2013
taking over from Lt. General Andrew Gutti from Uganda. During his year-long tenure
as commander of AMISOM, the mission recorded significant military victories against
the Al-Shabaab terror group by liberating 10 strategic towns including the former
stronghold of Baraawe, under Operation Indian Ocean and Operation Eagle.
Speaking at the airport, Lt. Gen. Ntigurirwa said his experience has been enriching
and urged his successors to keep up the struggle for the liberation of Somalia.
My tour of duty as AMISOM Force Commander has ended. Now I go back to my
