Headphone Output
This audio output can be used to listen to the TV audio through an external
headphones. The audio level at the output is set to a xed level and cannot
be adjusted. The output employs a 16 ohm mini-stereo jack connection.
Analog Fixed Audio Output
This audio output can be used to listen to the TV audio through an external
stereo system. The audio level at the output is set to a xed level and
cannot be adjusted.
Connects to the coaxial audio input of any digital audio equipment that is
PCM/Dolby digital compatible. The following table shows the audio inputs
and the audio format which are present at the coaxial Audio Output.
Both the HDMI and DVI formats contain digital video. In the case of the
HDMI format the audio is also digital and is part of the video and audio
data stream over the single HDMI connection. In contrast, the DVI format
contains only digital video in its data stream. The audio is sent over a
separate red and white wired analog audio connection. Furthermore, a
DVI to HDMI adapter is required to connect the DVI connector to the
HDMI connector.
PC Video & Audio Input
The MA1 chassis models (KDl-26M3000 & ML130, KDL-32M3000 &
ML130 and KDL-37M3000) have a Personal Computer Input (PC-IN),
which connects directly to the PC 15 pin DIN connector (HD15 connector).
Once connected the TV functions as a video monitor and audio output
(separate Stereo Mini Plug) for the PC. There is a complete table of PC
Input Signal Compatibility on Page 18 in the Owners Manual.

Standby 3.3V power supply to IC6100 & PFC. The 19V is used as the
Main VCC in the ON mode for both circuits. IC6100 develops and supplies
all other operating voltages (12V, 24V, AU15V) throughout the television
as shown on Figure 3-1 for the 37. An additional 5V is developed on the
G1M-Board for the 26 and 32 TVs (Ref. Fig. 3-2).
The 24V at CN6203 is used to power the Backlight Inverter board. The
Inverter converters (or Inverters) the 24V using an oscillator circuit into
between 1700Vrms to 2400Vrms to drive the Cold Cathode Fluorescent
Lamp assembly.
There are additional regulator circuits located on the BM-Board.
However, each regulator can be traced back to one of the Main power
supply secondary voltages from the G1M or G5M board (Ref. Fig.s 31 & 3-2). The 12V secondary voltages supplies all the regulators on
the 37 TV. The 12V and the 5V supplies the regulators on the 26 and
32 TVs. The source of regulator supply voltage is good information
when troubleshooting a power supply problem, which we will discuss in
the coming troubleshooting section. You will always want to check the
regulator supply voltage before replacing the BM-Board for a suspected
regulator failure.
The power supply and regulator circuits are practical identical between
the 37 and the 26 & 32 TVs. The differences are as follows
Additional 5V supply from G1M-Board for 26 and 32
Q4018 regulator is supplied by the 5V on the 26 and 32
Panel voltages are 12V & 3.3V for 37
Panel voltage is 5V only for the 26 and 32
The Main Power Supply IC6002 is turned on through the PH6002 and
the subsequent switching circuit. Approximately 19V is supplied from the
CTV-44

Dead Set
In a dead set condition, no relay click will be heard and there will be
no green POWER LED illumination when a power ON command is
received from the Power button on the front panel or remote controller.
One of the following failures has occurred.
Faulty AC outlet
Damage Power Cord
Open Main AC fuse F6000
Defective Standby 3.3V Power Supply (G1M or G5M board)
Defective TV Microprocessor (BM-Board)
The rst two bullets shown are indicating that AC power is not getting
to the G1M or G5M board. Conrm that the listed components and
connections are okay, and repair as needed.
You can quickly determine if AC power is applied to the G1M or G5M
board by measuring the voltage level across CN6102/pins 1 & 2. The
voltage level should be 110VAC. If the AC power is missing one of the
components in the rst two bullets listed is defective.

You can conrm a failure of the Main power supply circuit (IC6002) 12V
secondary by conrming the presence of the STBY 3.3V at CN6201/pin
13. If the 3.3V is present then that conrms the presence DC input supply
to IC6002.
Notice that both the Main and Standby power supply circuits share the
same DC input supply coming from D6015 (Ref. Fig. 3-1 & 3-2).
The 5 Blink Pattern Indicates a missing 5V output condition (26 & 32
Only). This protection mode basically indicates a main power supply
(IC6002) failure. The 5V secondary voltage is missing. Check for the
5V at CN6202/pin 5. If the level is 0V at power On then the main power
supply has failed. However, if the level approaches 5V before shut OFF
then the Main microprocessor is the possible defective component.
No Video
A loss of 24V from the G1M-Board or G5M-Board can cause a No Video
& Audio OK condition. The 24V is the Backlight Inverter board supply
voltage. Although it is rare that only one output of a power supply will fail,
it should still be considered when troubleshooting a No Video condition.
The 24V output can be measured at CN6203/pins 2-5 (37) and on
CN6202/pins 2-5 (26 & 32). A ashlight can be used to conrm video is
being sent from the Bm-Board to the LCD Panel assembly. Shine the light
at various areas on the front of the LCD Panel. You should see video in
the lighted areas.

of R4008 and R4013. The top of R4013 is connected to the Main
Microprocessor IC3011/pin 28. In normal operation the voltage level at
pin 28 is 3.1V. A loss of the D3.3V will pull pin 28 low (0V). The TV will
shutdown and a 4X blink pattern on the Red Timer LED will occur.
Panel V LVP (5X Red LED Blink Pattern)
The Panel V is 5V for the 26 & 32 models, and 12V for the 37 model.
The Main microprocessor monitors the Panel V output of Q4018 voltage
regulator. The Panel V is rst applied to a voltage divider circuit consisting
of R4042 and R4043. The top of R4043 is connected to the Main
Microprocessor IC3011/pin 48 through R4067. In normal operation the
voltage level at pin 28 is 3.1V. A loss of the Panel V will pull pin 48 low
(0V). The TV will shutdown and a 5X blink pattern on the Red Timer LED
will occur.

has occurred check for the 12V at CN6202/pin 4. If the level is 0V before
shut down IC6002 has failed. If the level approaches 12V before shut
down then the most likely failure is the Main microprocessor IC3011.
24V & 12V OVP Protect (2X Red LED Blink Pattern)
Reference Figures 4-1 & 4-2
These two protection circuits monitor the 12V and 24V Main power supply
secondary outputs for an over voltage condition. All circuitry is located on
the G1M or G5M board.
To determine if a 12V or 24V OVP failure is causing the 2X protection
mode you can monitor these two outputs before the TV shuts OFF. There
is approximately a 20 second window of time between TV turn ON and
shut OFF to monitor the outputs.
The 12V can be measure at CN6202/pin 4 and the 24V can be measured
at CN6203/pin 2 (37) or CN6202/pin 2 (26 & 32). If the 12V exceeds
15V or the 24V exceeds 27V before shut OFF then the Main power
supply is defective. If neither of the outputs exceed the designated
threshold (remain below 12V & 24V respectively) before shut OFF the
Main microprocessor is defective.
Both IC7004 and IC7006 are located on the BM-Board. In most cases,
a 3X protection mode will occur due to a defective IC7004 or IC7006
or open PS7000 and the BM-Board will be replaced to x the problem.
However, before replacing the BM-Board conrm the presence of 12V
at CN6202/pin 4. The 12V is the input voltage for both regulators. The
presence of the 12V conrms a defective BM-Board.

The BM-Board receives all analog and digital video inputs (Composite,
Component, HDMI, DVI, PC and Tuner RF), which are then applied to the
Xillion video switcher & video processor IC7300.
All Composite and S-Video inputs are applied directly to IC7300 for
processing.
The tuner RF is rst applied to the combination NTSC/ATSC Tuner and
then applied to IC7300.
The two HDMI inputs have a dedicated switcher IC5513. The output of
the HDMI switcher is applied to a switcher/AD converter IC4501.
The PC input is also applied to IC4501.
The two component inputs have a dedicated switcher IC2505. The output
of IC2505 is applied to IC4501.
Therefore, the HDMI, PC, and Component input are all applied to IC4501
on the BM-Board. The PC and Component are sent through the A/D
converter within IC4501 before being outputted to IC7300. The HDMI
is already in a digital format, and therefore, bypasses the internal A/D
Converter.

board take a ashlight and shine the light at various areas on the front of
the LCD Panel to conrm that the BM-Board is sending video to the LCD
Panel. You should see video in the areas illuminated by the light of the
ashlight.
Perform the following checks to determine whether the defective
component is the Backlight Inverter Board or the Power Supply Board.
Reference Figure 5-2
1) Check the 24V at CN2/pins 2-5
If this voltage is missing check all connections between the G1M or G5M
power supply board and the Inverter Board. Troubleshoot the Power
Supply board if connections are okay.
2) Check the High-Voltage Inverter board output to the backlights.
Reference gure 5-2 for a detailed diagram for the High-Voltage test
points.
As shown in gure 5-2 place an Oscilloscope probe Over (or Near) DO NOT PENETRATE THE PROTECTIVE TRANSFORMER COVER
- each of the individual output transformers or connector on the Inverter
Board. The proper position is indicated by a Star on the diagram. Each
transformer drives one backlight lamps. Set your oscilloscope to the
Volts/Div and Time/Div. to those shown on each waveform picture.
2) If you have the back cover off, there are plenty of holes
or areas at the rear of the LCD Panel in which to see the
light from the panel backlights.
CTV-44

voltage again with the lamp disconnected. If the voltage level recovers to
proper output level the lamp is defective. However, if the output level does
not recover the Inverter output is defective.
The video wires on the LVDS cable are twist pairs (Color & White pair),
which distinguishes them from the other wires on the connector. Good
video levels will be approximately 100mVpp waveform. Notice that the
orange LVDS wire has a different waveform. Use the waveform in the
diagram to conrm a good video level.
If the is no video level or extremely low video level disconnect the LVDS
cable and measure the levels again to determine if the TCON is loading
the lines down or if the BM-Board is sending a poor video signal. If the
levels recover to proper levels after disconnecting the cable replace
the LCD Panel assembly. The TCON board cannot be replaced as an
individual part, it is part of the LCD Panel assembly.
If the levels do not recover to proper levels then replace the BM-Board.
Momentary Backlight Momentary Video: The TV seems to power up
normally. The backlight turns on and the SONY logo is displayed, the
backlight turns OFF and back ON. However, the backlight only turns
back ON - the second time -momentarily with video and turns OFF again
permanently. The TV stays ON with audio, and no protection mode is
activated.
The cause of this failure symptom is either a defective lamp or a defective
Inverter output. To isolate the defective component measure each Inverter
board high voltage output at the individual output transformer. Reference
gure 5-2 and the procedure described in the previous No Backlight
section for a detailed description on how to properly measure the Inverter
High Voltage outputs.
If the Inverter High Voltage output levels measure okay then one of the
backlight lamps have failed and the LCD Panel must be replaced.
If any of the Inverter High Voltage output levels measure low or is missing
disconnect the lamp connected to that transformer. Measure the output

All audio inputs (except Video 2) are connected directly to the BM-Board.
Video 2 and the Headphone audio inputs connect directly to the UMBoard and then to the BM-Board through connector CN1400. The BMBoard contains all audio switching and audio processing circuits. IC2014
is the analog audio switcher and ADC on the BM-Board.
The ATSC and HDMI digital inputs bypass the switcher IC2014 and
go directly to the Xillion IC7300. IC7300 performs all audio processing
functions (e.g. volume, equalizing, and special effects). Note the two
paths for the ATSC and NTSC signals. The NTSC signal from the tuner
goes to the switcher IC2014 for A/D conversion and switching, and the
ATSC, as already mentioned, goes directly IC7300 for decoding.
The Xillion IC7300 output is D/A converted and then applied to the
audio output amplier IC2009. The amplied signal is then applied to the
speakers through CN2000.
The analog audio output (J1722) on these models is a xed audio level
approximately 500mVrms. This output is always ON.
The digital SPDIF audio output (J1701) is a coaxial cable connection.
Refer to the digital output table in Chapter 2 for details on the audio
formats compatible with this output.

If the AU15V are missing then the problem exists in the power supply
circuits. Replace the G1M or G5M Board.
If the AU15V is okay, then the next step is to check the speaker system.
The speakers should measure 8 ohms each. Measure the speaker
resistance directly on the speaker terminals. Conrm all speaker
connections to the BM-Board are secure and undamaged. Replace or
repair the components were necessary.
If the speaker system checks okay, then the problem exists on BM-Board.
Replace the BM-Board.
