A megatrend
of the 21st century
Barcelona 26-28 May 2015 Hilton Diagonal Mar

Background
The AESGP Annual Meeting has been for decades the best attended and most
significant meeting of the consumer health industry. It brings together more than 400
delegates from all kind of stakeholder organisations and the industry. Major trends
for the sector are elaborated with leading experts in the field. In addition, the AESGP
Annual Meeting is a unique occasion to meet colleagues from the industry and relevant
organisations in the political and commercial environment.

Objective of the meeting

Self-care has become widely recognised as an important part of healthcare. But what
are the implications? How can innovation be brought to the market place so that
citizen empowerment is not only a concept but a growing reality in the 21st century?
New research on the economic and social value, but also trends in regulation of
non-prescription medicines, food supplements and self-care medical devices, will be
presented at the conference and discussed with stakeholders. Key decision makers
and leaders of the consumer health industry will provide the political perspectives on
how to make real progress on the provision of high quality self-care products.

Who should attend?

The meeting is highly recommended to all executives of the consumer health industry
(General Manager, marketing, sales, business development, regulatory, research and

The new European Union platform for the

promotion of self-care systems

In order to make progress in the wide promotion of self-care, a close cooperation

with all relevant stakeholders is a key prerequisite. Such a cooperation
has become far more intensive over the last years and is now supported
and facilitated by the new European Union (EU) project on the promotion of
self-care systems, which is a most useful extension of the work on good
governance of non-prescription medicines carried out under the mandate of
the previous European Commission. The session will give an update of the

Self-care medical devices and food supplements:

New drivers for the self-care market?

Substance-based, self-care medical devices and food supplements have become

an important part of self-care. However, their regulatory future is uncertain. The
current revision of the medical device legislation addresses the adequate future
legal basis for substance based medical devices with different approaches under
consideration. In the area of food supplements, the evaluation of botanical claims
continues to be put on hold with uncertainties for the whole marketplace
including in particular herbal medicinal products, for which an elaborated system
has been put in place in the European Union. The session will give an overview on
where the debate stands and what will be the likely future environment.

Switching: A mega trend?

How to ensure availability of safe products?

Over the last years, there has been an unprecedented increase in discussions
about safety issues on the European level, the so-called referral procedures.
Questions were raised if all these procedures were justified and if they
do not unnecessarily question existing products and hamper the move to
non-prescription status.
The session will also look at the intensive ongoing work in relation to the
implementation of the directive on falsified medicines with potentially
considerable implications in the marketplace.

Vincent Warnery, Senior Vice President, Global Consumer Healthcare
Division, Sanofi

June Raine, Chair of the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee
(PRAC), EMA

Beln Escribano, Agency for Medicines and Health Products, Spain

good understanding of the priorities of the new European Commission and
the new European Parliament in the given context.

Peter Liese, Member of the European Parliament
Matthias Groote, Member of the European Parliament

Is the move of medicines from prescription to non-prescription slowing down

or speeding up? How important is it for the future of self-care? What needs to
be done to be successful?

These are key questions for many executives in the consumer health industry.
The session will follow up on the 2014 London conference and expose recent
