Finding time during the

holiday season

Perhaps no time of year is as busy as the holiday season,

when social engagements and holiday shopping combine
to dominate so much of what is normally our free time.
Additionally, holiday travel and late nights spent at work
to make up for lost time also cut into our free time,
leaving many people in search of ways to add more hours
to the day. Though theres no way to make a day last
longer, there are ways to save some time this holiday
season.
* Go it alone. Holiday shopping can be very time
consuming, but shoppers who decide to shop alone may
find themselves more productive and focused on the task
at hand. Rather than going from store to store and
checking items off multiple shopping lists, shoppers who
shop singularly can devote all of their attention to their
own lists.
* Plan ahead. Whether shopping for holiday gifts, taking
the family to buy a Christmas tree or organizing a
holiday dinner with friends, the more you can plan
ahead of the holiday season the less time you will waste
once the season hits full swing. For example, when
choosing a weekend to go Christmas tree shopping,
inform others a few weeks in advance and let them know
you want to go early to avoid crowds. This saves you
time and might just help you land one of the best trees
on the lot.
* Dont shy away from shortcuts when hosting holiday
dinners. Hosting a holiday dinner is a big undertaking,
one that often finds hosts spending a significant amount
of time in the kitchen. But hosts can save time by taking
some shortcuts regarding the menu. For instance, when
hosting an especially large meal, dont be afraid to buy
some premade side dishes from a local grocery store or
buy a bakery cake rather than whipping up your own
homemade dessert.
Parents of young children might prefer to stay home so
they can create their own unique holiday memories,
while those without children might just appreciate some
peace and quiet during this hectic time of year.

uffet-style meals are often the best option for

large gatherings of friends and family. Space
constraints can make it difficult to sit everyone
down for a formal meal, and buffets enable guests to
mingle with one another while selecting only the foods
they want to eat.
These are not the only advantages to buffets,
however. Plenty of dishes can be made in advance
and stored in the freezer, providing hosts and
hostesses a little breathing room. Meals can be
prepared a few days in advance and heated up come
the day of the festivities.
Buffet service can work any time of the day and can
include both cold and hot foods if they are kept at
the right temperature. Explore these other tips for
entertaining buffet-style.
Serve food in an easily accessible location. Place
food on a table or counter that will not be in the way
of foot traffic. Arrange dishes and cutlery at the head
of the buffet line so guests can move in an orderly
fashion as they select their food.
Tie together utensils. Group forks, knives and
spoons with a cloth napkin and dish so guests can
easily grab what they need for dining.
Practice food safety. Hot dishes need to be kept
warm and cold dishes need to be placed on ice.
Chafing dishes make this possible. Use chafing
dishes and pans in combination with your serving
plates. Heated elements or sternos under chafing
dishes will keep foods steaming. Place crushed ice
and water in a pan under cold foods to keep them
chilled. Food should be removed if it has been sitting
at room temperature for more than two hours.
Experiment with meals that keep. Stews,
casseroles, soups, baked pasta dishes, and similar
fare can be made in advance and frozen. Thaw these
dishes in the refrigerator the day before the party,
then heat up foods and serve for the buffet. Prepared
foods purchased at a supermarket or specialty retailer
also work well for buffets. Simply purchase and then

set out for even less work.

Weigh your catering options. Catering services can
make easy work of holiday hosting but not without
expense. Caterers may charge by the person or by
each tray of food. Some will include table settings
and rolls with the price; others may not. Calculate the
costs of using a caterer and weigh them against the
cost of doing the work yourself.
Use plastic utensils for hot foods. Metal spoons
and forks can quickly heat up when sitting in hot
serving dishes.
Use plastic utensils so guests do not
get burned.
Keep dressings on the side. Salad dressings
and other condiments can cause foods to wilt or
get soggy. Have them nearby so guests can help
themselves. Topless squirt bottles are easier to
handle and can help limit spills.
Be mindful of food allergies. Although you may
have various foods available to meet the dietary
needs of guests, do not place risky foods next to
others. Cross-contamination can occur from spills or
if a person uses the same serving spoon to dish out
foods. Label food options so everyone knows whats
available.
Ask a friend to help set up. Ask a close friend or
family member to come over an hour or two early to
help you set up the buffet and with any other lastminute touches. This will take some of the pressure
off of you, and you can chat and enjoy yourself before
your hosting duties begin.
Frozen foods should be thoroughly wrapped.
Only use freezer-safe bags and containers to store
prepared foods. Otherwise you may run the risk of
freezer burn or freezing, affecting the taste of the final
product. Keep in mind that many desserts, such as
fruit pies, also can be frozen. Its possible to make
ahead just about everything for a holiday feast and
simply thaw and reheat when the big day arrives.

Ready your home for holiday guests

Quick cleaning

Sometimes the joy of hosting can be

overshadowed by the task of preparing
for your guests. Although a thorough
cleaning of the home is great if you have
the time, it may not be necessary. Go
from room to room identifying spaces
that are in need of a thorough cleaning.
Spend time in the kitchen clearing
clutter from the counters and make
sure the dining space is clean and the
table is presentable. A table runner and
a centerpiece of festive flowers can
brighten up the space instantly. Fluff
cushions on sofas and give floors or
carpets a quick vacuuming. Always be
sure the bathrooms are clean and fresh,
with laundered hand towels at the ready.
Childrens bedrooms and other areas of
the house may not require such a critical
eye. Simply keep doors closed in offlimits rooms.

Create a guest sanctuary

Overnight guests should have a designated

space they can use as a retreat. If you do not
have a guest room, consider having children
bunk with one another and designating one of
the kids rooms for your guests. Fresh linens,
an alarm clock, a television, and Internet
access are nice touches.
A guest room also can be set up in a den or
office with a pull-out sofa bed. Provide access
to a nearby bathroom so guests can enjoy
some privacy.
Hosting children is easier than hosting adults
because they wont require the same level of
privacy and space. An extra mattress tucked
under the bed in your childs room can be an
impromptu place for kids to retire.

Stock up on supplies

Purchase extra travel-sized toiletries at the

drug store so your guests needs are covered
in case they forget something. Store them in a

zip-top bag and let guests know where these

items are kept.
Purchase a guest set of towels, sheets and
pillowcases. Keep these in an air-tight storage
bag or bin, so when guests arrive, they will
have their own set of linens. Launder these
linens after use.

Stock up on food

Ask guests which foods and beverages they

prefer and try to have some on hand. Use
your spare time to prepare some meals and
freeze them. This way if someone drops by
unexpectedly, you can simply defrost a meal
and have it ready in no time. Keep a tin of
cookies and tea bags ready for those who pop
in for a snack and conversation.
With the holiday season in full swing, holiday
hosts must ready their homes for overnight
guests.

he holiday season is about more than

just rushing to stores to stock up on
presents. Socializing and hosting friends
and family members to catch up on a years
worth of news also makes this time of year so
special.
Before friends and family arrive, holiday hosts
must take steps to prepare their homes for
their guests. The following home prep plan
can make relatively easy work of tidying up
the house and ensuring it is inviting to guests.

Start with the entrance

Hosting can motivate homeowners to finish

certain home improvement projects that
enhance the appearance of their homes.
Tidy up your homes entryway to make it
more welcoming. Be sure the front door and
walkways are well lit. Remove obstructions
and trim back bushes and other plant
life. Festive decorations can brighten up
the space. Dont forget a welcome mat to
reinforce to guests that they truly are welcome
at your home.

Holiday living made easy

W

ith so much on our plates between

Thanksgiving and New Years Day,
the holiday season can be hectic.
Fortunately, there are many ways to save
time and make the holiday season more
manageable.
If you dont have plastic clips to
hang lights around windows and to
the eaves of your home, inexpensive
clothespins will work just as well. If
youre concerned about the color of
the wooden clips, paint them holiday
hues before stringing the lights.
Put a bath mat, rug-side down and
rubber-side up, beneath your
Christmas tree stand. This allows
you to spin the tree as you hang
lights and ornaments without
damaging the floor underneath. It
also makes it simple to undress the
tree once the season is over. Use a
tree skirt to hide the mat.
Squeeze artificial tree portions into
concrete form tubes. First wrap the
tree portions in twine and then slip
them into the concrete sleeves.
Each tube can be stowed in attic
or garage rafters, freeing up
precious space.
Use empty squirt bottles to make
baking and cooking easier. Pancake
and cookie batters can be squirted
from the containers for less mess.
Store one or two strings of lights in a

Color-code storage containers so you
can easily find holiday decorations in the
attic or basement.
Pack for a holiday excursion using a
collapsible clothing storage hanger for
closets. Fold clothes on each fabric shelf
and then collapse it into your suitcase.
When you get to your destination, unfold
and hang it in a closet so all of your
clothes will be at the ready.

plastic shopping bag to keep the

strands from getting tangled. Hang
the bags from a hook in a garage or
stack them in a storage bin.
Use plastic zip ties to attach garland
and lights to bannisters. Theyre
easy to assemble and will not
damage the bannisters.
A paper towel holder can be
screwed to the wall in a craft room to
neatly hold spools of ribbon. Simply
pull the length you need from the
spool and cut for easy decorating.
Mount a tree stand to a piece of wood
with screws or glue. This prevents spills
from reaching the floor while stabilizing
the tree.
Old maps make interesting gift wrap and
are a nice change of pace from
commercially produced paper
or newsprint.
Wrap duct tape or another type of sticky
tape around your hand. Pat over fallen
pine needles that accumulate around the
tree. In hard-to-reach areas, wrap the
tape around a broom or a floor sweeper.
When traveling for the holidays, use a
brightly colored suitcase or flashy tape to
make your suitcase stand out from
others at the airport.
Place hardened brown sugar in a baking
dish, cover it with a moist paper towel
and either microwave it on high for 20
second intervals or place it in a 300 F
oven for five minutes. This will soften the
sugar, making it easier to use the sugar
to prepare your favorite holiday
cookie recipes.
Save plastic bread ties, which can be
used to make tags for the wires on
certain devices. Such ties also can be
used to organize decorating components
and to keep your place on a roll of tape.
Measure the inside of your picture
window and construct a wooden frame to
its dimensions. Staple holiday lights to
the frame and then easily slip the frame
in and out of place each year.

Easy ideas for holiday wreaths

Say cheese wreath

Purchase a premade evergreen wreath

or wrap boughs of pine around a wreath
frame to make your own. Glue or tie on
small wooden frames with photos of the
family to the wreath. Fill in the barren
spots with small bows and ornaments.

Fruitful wreath

Instead of an evergreen wreath,

create something festive
and edible. Fruit and
vegetables in vibrant
colors can be used to
fashion a wreath. Use
picks or wire to attach
oranges, lemons, limes,
clementines, and any other
produce desired to a foam
wreath. Use leaves to fill in
sparse areas and a thick
ribbon to hang the wreath.

Holly vine wreath

Purchase a plain
grapevine wreath and
decorate it with sprigs of
holly leaves and stems
with berries. Simple and
festive, this wreath should
take only a few minutes to
make and then hang.

Make This
the

Best as

Make a fresh flower wreath from a florists

wreath and fresh blooms. Soak the foam
wreath in water according to the packaged
directions. Trim flower stems (carnations are
durable) and insert the stems into the wreath.
Attach a bow to the bottom of the wreath and
then hang. This is one wreath that is best
displayed the day of the festivities because it
has a short shelf life.

Add a glamorous touch to

an evergreen wreath with
faux fruit and pine cones that you
paint with glimmering metallic
colors. Intersperse items in gold,
copper and silver for an eyecatching piece that can adorn
any spot in your home. Add a few
twinkling lights to reflect off of the
metallic elements to add even
more appeal.

reaths are synonymous with the

holiday season, and they can range
from intricate to simple to flashy
to rustic. Creating festive wreaths does not
necessarily require a lot of skill, and wreaths
can be fashioned from a variety of different
materials.
The first step to crafting wreaths is to gather
the foundation pieces. This usually involves
a sturdy material that will serve as the wreath
round. It can be vine, foam, branches, or even
wire. Youll also need decorative items that
fit the theme of your wreath. These may be
berries, ornaments, ribbons, bows, and other
trinkets that will be attached to the wreath.
Florist wire and tape can be used to attach the
ornaments to the wreath.

Carve
a turkey
like a pro

oasted turkey is the centerpiece

of many holiday feasts. That
glistening, golden skin and moist
meat beneath is the perfect companion
to potatoes, string beans and any
number of side dishes.
Many holiday chefs have received
compliments on the appearance of a
freshly prepared turkey sitting on the
holiday serving platter. But those same
chefs may not know how to properly
carve up their masterpieces after the
grand presentation has been made.
1. Place the turkey on a large, sturdy
cutting board. Do not cut the turkey in
the pan you used to cook it. Remove
the string that may be tying the legs
together. Turn the board so that the
back of the turkey is facing you.
2. Choose a sharp knife to carve the
turkey. A long, narrow knife may work
best. Serrated knives may tear the
turkey meat, so it may be better to use
a flat knife. Some people prefer the
ease of an electric knife. This is
entirely your choice.
3. Cut through the skin on a leg and
gently bend the leg as you slice
through to expose the joint. Cut
through and remove the entire leg.
Then separate the drumstick from the
thigh. Repeat on the other side.
4. Cut the thigh meat parallel to the thigh
bone and place on your serving platter.
5. To slice the breast meat, insert your
knife in the center of the breast bone
and cut down until you reach the ribs.
Then slice the breast meat in toward
your initial cut so you are cutting

How to handle
holiday homesickness

T
across the grain of the meat. This will
keep the meat tender. Another idea is
to remove one side of the breast and
slice across it to produce smaller
pieces for serving.

6. Find the wish bone and place it on the

side to dry. Children typically like to
break the wish bone.
7. Find the joint of the wings and remove
them in a similar fashion as you did for
the legs. They are small enough that
they should not require extra slicing
and can be placed whole on the
serving platter.
8. Drizzle the sliced meat with any
reserved cooking juices to keep the
turkey moist and flavorful.

Since turkey is usually the star of many

holiday meals, it pays to know the correct
way to carve turkey for celebrations.

he holiday season is meant to be enjoyed

with family and friends, but not everyone
can make it home to see their loved
ones on the holidays. Commitments to work
or school prevent some people from heading
home for the holidays, and such situations often
inspire feelings of homesickness.
Holiday homesickness may not fully hit some
people until the day of the holiday, when
people separated from their families miss both
the company of their relatives and the holiday
traditions they have enjoyed since childhood.
But there are several ways to conquer holiday
homesickness so you can still enjoy this festive
time of year.
Make technology work for you. Though you
might not be able to sit at the holiday dinner
table with your family this holiday season, that
does not mean you still cant lay your eyes on
your those closest to you. Arrange to video
chat with family members sometime during
the holiday. If youre shipping gifts home, ask
your family members to open their gifts during
your video chatting session so you can see the
reactions on their faces when they open their
presents. This can allow you to enjoy the thrill
of seeing a loved one open the perfect present,
even if you happen to be thousands of miles
away as he or she tears off the wrapping paper.
Volunteer in your community. Another way
to combat holiday homesickness is to volunteer
in your community. Knowing youre doing your

can make it easier for you to be away from
family on the holiday. Whether you feed the
homeless at a local shelter, distribute toys at a
nearby childrens hospital or visit an assisted
living facility and spend time with an equally
homesick elderly person, putting a smile on
someone elses face is sure to put a smile on
your own face as well.
Stay true to traditions. If your family adheres
to certain traditions every holiday, then do your
best to maintain those traditions. Watch that
holiday movie your family always watches or
cook that special dish you only enjoy during the
holiday season and invite your friends who also
wont be leaving town to join in the fun.
Participate in community events. Loneliness
on the holiday can contribute to feelings of
homesickness, so make an effort to celebrate
the holiday with your community. Many
communities host special holiday events,
be it tree lighting ceremonies, parades or
local theater performances of classics such
as Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol.
Participate in these events, which can lift your
holiday spirit and ensure you arent spending
the holiday alone at home.
Holiday homesickness can be a tough
pill to swallow, but there are many
ways for men and women to enjoy the holidays
even if they wont be able to see their families.

Create an
energy-efficient
home for the holidays

is the season to be festive, and

that usually means stringing up
hundreds of twinkling lights to
create a welcoming glow on dark winter
nights. Some people view the holiday
season as their chance to go all out
with regard to decorating their homes
with an abundance of lights, inflatable
lawn ornaments and maybe even some
mechanical figures.
While these decorations certainly may
be symbols of the season, its easy
to forget just how much energy and
resources they consume. A typical
strand of lights uses around 300 watts of
electricity. Multiply those figures by the
dozens of strings of lights people use
and its easy to see how quickly energy
usage can add up.
In addition to lights, lit candles, animated
dolls, wreaths, trees, and scores of
imported ornaments contribute to the
energy consumption per household.
Even so, environmentally conscious
individuals need not skip the holiday
dcor and entertaining. Fortunately,
there are various ways to be energy
efficient with holiday dcor this season.
Switch to LED lights. LED lights
consume a fraction of the energy
traditional incandescent bulbs do.
While a standard string of 50 lights
consumes 300 watts, LED sets only
consume four watts. This not only saves
energy, but also considerable amounts
of money over the course of the holiday
season.
Use fiber-optic decorations. Fiber
optic items are lit by one light. The
illumination carries through the fiber
optic cables to the entire decoration.
Use a power strip and timer. Plug
decorations into a power strip (be sure
to follow the recommended power load
for safety) and hook everything up to a
timer so lights are not on when no one

can see them.

Check light strands. Always inspect
lights for frayed wires and any damage.
Frayed lights are less efficient and pose
a considerable safety risk.
Enhance decorations. Use mirrors
and reflective ornaments to give the
appearance of more lights without
actually adding more.
Turn off ambient lighting. Christmas
tree lights or the lights framing a picture
window should be sufficient to light up
a room. Keep lamps and overhead
lighting off while the tree is lit to save
money and energy.
Lower the thermostat. When
entertaining, turn the thermostat down
a few degrees. Having extra people in
your home will raise the temperature.
Similarly, heat generated by the oven
and other cooking appliances can warm
up a home. Dont waste energy by
keeping the heat turned on high.
Invest in rechargeable batteries.
According to Energy Quest, 40 percent
of all batteries are purchased during
the holiday season. To power
those many gifts and devices, use
rechargeable batteries which can
be used again and again.
Change your cooking practices.
Smaller appliances use less energy. Put
those toaster ovens, slow cookers and
electric fryers to good use. Only use the
oven if you are cooking a large meal.
Wait until the dishwasher is full.Pack
in the dishes from holiday meals, and
only run the dishwasher when it is full.
Reuse items whenever possible.
Many items around the house can be
put to good use as decorations, holiday
servers or gifts. Take inventory of
what you have before you go out and
purchase new decorations.

and hit the open road

loved ones. Such gettogethers are great ways
to make an already

Alarm systems and
neighborhood watch
programs can provide
some peace of mind to

homeowners, but there

are additional ways to
protect your home when
traveling this holiday

Use timers to make
it appear as though

Entertainment systems
and even certain home
lighting products allow
homeowners to make it

burglars the impression

Cut the costs of holiday travel

ravel is a significant and often

expensive part of the holiday
season for many men and women.
Whether youre hitting the open road or
taking to the friendly skies to visit loved
ones, this year there are various ways you
can cut the costs of holiday travel.
Book a budget-friendly rental. The
holiday season is a busy time of year for
rental car agencies, and holiday travelers
who are late to reserve their vehicles may
find themselves driving gas guzzlers for
the duration of their trip. When booking
your automobile rental this holiday
season, do your best to reserver a car
early so you have access to the agencys
entire inventory and not just whats left on
the lot. If you do not specifically reserve a
fuel-efficient vehicle, you might be stuck
with a large SUV or another car or truck
that costs a lot at the pump.
Bring along your own food. Food is
another oft-overlooked expense of holiday
travel. If youre flying, try to eat before you
leave for the airport or look up the airport
and/or airline regulations to determine
if you can bring your own food. Food
purchased at the airport or on the airplane
will be more expensive and is often more

unhealthy than meals you can prepare

at home. When driving, pack a cooler
instead of relying on truck stop eateries,
which tend to be fast food restaurants.
Try to bring gifts rather than ship them.
When possible, try to squeeze as many of
your holiday gifts into your car rather than
shipping them. Shipping costs can quickly
add up, but you can save a lot of money
if you make room for gifts in your trunk
or in the backseat of your vehicle. Just
be sure that the gifts do not compromise
your visibility on the road. Even if you
are flying, it might be more economical to
place gifts in a bag you can check rather
than paying separate shipping charges
for each gift. Research the baggage fees
versus the cost of shipping to make a
more informed decision.
Split hosting duties. If you want to save
money but are accustomed to traveling to
visit family and friends during the holiday
season, then consider hosting a gathering
at your own home. Friends and family
likely wont scoff at being relieved of some
of their annual hosting duties, and you can
limit the cost of your travel to just one trip
instead of multiple trips.

Share lodging. If you are used to staying

in hotels when traveling for the holiday
season, then you may want to share a
hotel room with family members who also
stay in hotels. Lodging costs tend to be
very expensive during the holiday season,
but splitting such costs with a friend or
family member can help you stay within
budget.
Traveling during the holiday season can
be expensive, but men and women willing
to make a few travel concessions can
save themselves a substantial amount of
money.

How to maintain workout routines during the holidays

etween decking the halls, visiting family

and attending holiday parties, it may
seem like there is little time to maintain
a workout routine during the holiday season.
While the holiday season is an especially busy
time of year, men and women who plan and stay
dedicated to their routines do not need to let their
health fall by the wayside until January.
Several studies show that people can gain
anywhere from one pound to a few pounds
between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Although
that might not seem like a lot of weight, a report
in The New England Journal of Medicine noted
that many people never lose the weight they put

on during the holidays.

Those who struggle to keep the weight off
understand the importance of maintaining both
a consistent fitness schedule and healthy eating
habits. This may be challenging when the rich
foods and parties synonymous with the holiday
season are around to threaten healthy habits.
Heres how to stay on course.
Establish a regular exercise date. Treat
exercise as any other obligation on the calendar.
Make it a necessity and not a luxury. Schedule
time for workouts, even if it means removing
something else from your agenda.
Dont worry about the length of your

workouts. If youre accustomed to an hourlong

workout but cannot fit in more than 20 minutes
on some days, dont skip the workout simply
because its shorter. Make the most of that time
by targeting larger, core muscles.
Change your schedule. You may need to
alter your daily schedule to fit in gym workouts
or other exercise. Try getting up earlier and
heading out prior to work or school. This will
open up time throughout the rest of your day,
and you can use that time to meet the demands
of the holiday season.

Holiday office party planning pointers

resources you will

have at your disposal
before you begin your
research.

oliday office parties are highly anticipated events at

many companies. Some businesses prefer to go for
broke with regard to their holiday parties, hosting
lavish affairs for employees and clients alike. Other
companies opt for more low-key events attended only by
employees and their significant others.

vendors.

Those tasked with planning holiday office parties often

must make a host of decisions, all in an effort to ensure
everyone has a good time. That can be a tall task for party
planners who work for companies that boast a diverse
staff and/or clientele. But the following tips can help those
tasked with laying out a holiday office party plan an event
thats festive and enjoyable for everyone.
Start early. The longer you wait to begin planning the
party, the less options you will have at your disposal when
you do start to plan. For example, if you wait too long
before you start planning, restaurants or banquet halls
may already be booked solid on Fridays and Saturdays,
the most common nights that holiday office parties
are held. So start your planning as early as possible,
consulting with the person in charge with regard to the

Choose the type of

event. Holiday parties
do not often change
in style from year to
year, so this decision
may already be made
for you. For instance,
if last years holiday
party was an informal
affair for employees
only, then this years
event is likely to follow
the same formula. But
confirm such details
with your superiors.
You may have more
or less room in the
party budget this year,
so confirm the type
of party your bosses
intend to throw before
you begin contacting

addition to what time the party starts, the schedule should

include information about when cocktail hour begins, when
food will be served and when any special announcements,
if any, will be made. The schedule will ensure that no
guest feels like he or she missed any important events
that unfold during the party.
Dont forget entertainment. Entertainment can make a
holiday office party that much more memorable. Large
parties may require the services of a professional deejay
or live band, while small parties may survive with a
portable music player playing holiday music or popular
party fare. In addition to music, think up some games to
keep guests engaged throughout the night. Give prizes,
such as an extra day off or gift cards, to employees so
they have something to look forward to if they win the
games.

Arrange for transportation. If you plan to serve alcohol

during the party, then arrange to have transportation
available after the party for anyone who may need a ride
home. Its fair to assume that some employees may party
a little too much, so make sure the night does not take a
tragic turn by letting everyone know there is transportation
available if they need it.
Planning a holiday office party can be challenging and
fun. Establishing a party plan can ensure everyone has a
festive and safe night.

Choose a date and time for the party. Every employee

should be able to attend the holiday party, so try to
choose a date and time that is agreeable to everyone. The
chances of 100 percent attendance are slim, but you can
still aim for a date and time that works for as many people
as possible. If staff members include overnight workers,
consult with management to determine if those employees
can get the night off to attend the party.
Such a gesture will be appreciated
by the overnight shift, and it makes it
possible for more employees to join in
the festivities.
Make and share your schedule for
the night. Even the most extravagant
holiday office parties tend to be
somewhat loose events, but its still
important to create a schedule so
guests know when and where to be at
various points throughout the party. In

How to gift the people who arent family

Wednesday, December 17, 2014 W

Holiday gift ideas

for the new parent
in your life

Coach or club leader

ome the holiday season, many people find its not just
family and friends on their shopping lists. Coworkers and
acquaintances often land on such lists as well, and its not
always easy deciding what to get those people who arent close
friends or family members.

Boss

Gifting the boss is a sensitive subject and should be dictated by

company protocol. If you are the only employee to buy your boss
a gift, it may seem like you are trying to curry favor. However, if
everyone else is gifting and you fail to offer a gift, you may be
caught off guard.
Some business etiquette experts say that it is customary for bosses
to give gifts to employees but not the reverse. However, employees
who are especially close with their bosses or who work closely with
them each day may want to offer a small token of appreciation.
When selecting gifts for bosses, do not give anything too personal,
such as clothing, perfume or jewelry. Food or gift cards are a safer
bet. Experts say a gift in the range of $10 to $25 is adequate.
Chipping in for a gift with other employees may be the best course
of action so you dont inspire resentment among coworkers.

Babysitter or nanny

Caregivers play important roles in the lives of children. Once you

have found a sitter or nanny who you trust, you want to ensure you
keep that person content. If you regularly use a nanny or sitter,
money is always a great gift. For a full-time nanny, one week to one
months pay is adequate. For a regular sitter, consider a gift equal to
two nights pay.

Children today are involved in many different

activities, and chances are parents schedules are
filled with sports games and practices. Asmall gift of
$10 to $20 can show your appreciation to a coach or
club leader. This is another instance when it might
be nice to pool your resources with fellow parents to
purchase one large gift.

Mail carrier

If your mail is delivered by the same mail carrier week after week,
you may want to spread some holiday joy. Mail carriers have an
extra workload during the holidays, when they are tasked with
delivering packages and greeting cards in addition to more routine
mail. Civil servants may be forbidden from receiving cash. In such
instances, a gift card makes a great gift.

Trash collector

Hauling garbage is neither an easy nor glamorous job. Many

garbage collectors appreciate a tip for their hard work. Take notice
of who collects the trash from your home. If it is the same people
each week, take the time to personally deliver an envelope with a
small tip of around $20.

Hairstylist

If you are a regular for frequent treatments and color in a salon,

show the stylist you appreciate his or her work with a cash gift. If
you want to give a wrapped present, avoid tools of the trade or
anything that is too personal. Stylists are on their feet much of the
day, so a gift for a massage appointment or pedicure may be just
what they need.

any parents fondly recall their first holiday

season as a mom and dad. While youngsters
may not remember much about their first
Thanksgiving dinner with family or where their first
Christmas present was placed under the tree, parents
tend to cherish such memories, making their first
holidays with children in tow very memorable.
Loved ones of new parents can take steps to make
this holiday season even more special. The following
are some gift ideas for holiday shoppers who want to
make this season even more memorable for the proud
new parents in their lives.
Photo album: Todays new parents have more
pictures and video of their bundles of joy than
any previous generation of moms and dads, as
smartphones, tablets and other devices have made
taking pictures much easier than in years past. But
family members also have more access to such
photos than ever before, making it easy to put
together a special photo album of the new parents
and their new child. Pull pictures from the parents
social media accounts or make an album of the
numerous photos you have no doubt received since
your loved ones became parents. Parents likely dont
have time to make such albums, so your efforts will
almost certainly be appreciated.

Camcorder: Many smartphones are capable of

taking video, but such devices are not ideal for
shooting longer home videos new parents will want
to watch for years to come. An HD camcorder with
sufficient internal flash memory can allow new parents
to take longer, higher quality videos with superior
audio to those that are shot on smartphones. Such
a camcorder may be costly for those shopping on a
strict budget, but its a gift new parents are sure to
love and utilize for years to come.

Nursery sound system: New moms and dads are no

doubt anxiously anticipating the day when the newest
additions to their households sleep through the
night. Help speed up the arrival of that glorious night
with a nursery sound system that provides soothing
sounds to create a perfect sleeping environment for
newly born boys and girls. The results may not arrive
overnight, but parents may soon find their lovable
youngster is spending more of the wee hours of the
morning sleeping and less time waking up mom and
dad.

Spa treatment: Not every gift you buy for the new
parents in your life needs to focus on helping them
cherish their first holiday season as parents. New
parents tend to experience lots of exhaustion in their
first few months on the job, but a spa treatment can
be just the relaxing break they need from catering to
their bundle of joys every need. Moms may prefer
the full spa treatment, while dads may simply want a
massage and some relaxing time in the steam room.
Book a treatment for both mom and dad so they can
spend some time relaxing during this hectic time of
year.
New parents often cherish their first holiday season as
moms and dads, and the right holiday gift can make
that first holiday season even better.

Strategies for last-minute shoppers

oliday shoppers tend to fall into

three distinct camps. There are
those people who have completed
all of their shopping and wrapping even
before November ends. Others shop in
the weeks between Thanksgiving and
Christmas. Finally, many people wait until
the last minute, and such shoppers are
the ones seen rushing from store to store
on December 24.
Waiting until the last possible second to
purchase a gift may not prove much of
a problem when shopping for birthday
gifts. But come the holiday season,
such procrastination may find shoppers
perusing limited inventories and dealing
with other frantic proscrastinators.
But even those shoppers who still plan to
put off their holiday shopping can make
the most of such stalling this holiday
season.
Consider eGift cards. Many retailers
offer digital gift cards that can be emailed
in a matter of minutes. Purchase the card
from the online retailer and email the
redemption code to the gift recipient. Time
the email to arrive on Christmas morning
or include all of the necessary information
in a holiday card.

Ship to store. Some shoppers like the

convenience of ship-to-store services.
This enables a person to purchase a
gift online but avoid shipping charges
by having the item made available at a
store location. In-stock items are typically
ready the day of purchase, and this helps
you avoid crowds and impulse buys, as
online purchases are typically available at
special pick-up locations in the store that
allow online shoppers to skip long lines at
the registers.
Avoid gimmick gifts. Skip the as
seen on TV aisle at the store or trendy
infomercial gifts. Such gifts may suggest
to their recipients that you waited until the
last minute to buy the gifts and then really
didnt have any good ideas.
Expect extra charges and factor
such charges into your budget.
Procrastinating may work for your
schedule, but expect to pay more if you
shop online and require shipping. You will
probably need to expedite shipping if you
expect to have gifts delivered on time.
Verify the delivery date before making
any purchases. Paying more for shipping
may outweigh the hassle of driving to
store after store searching for gifts. Online

retailers like Amazon may

even offer selective delivery
on Christmas Eve.
Check store hours. Some
stores offer extended
shopping hours to meet
the needs of last-minute
shoppers. You may be
able to visit early morning
or late at night to skip the
crowds. Certain department
stores time sales with these
extended hours, such as
early bird or night owl
specials, so you may
even be rewarded for
procrastinating.
Shop smaller retailers.
One way to avoid the
hassles that often come
with holiday shopping
is to patronize smaller,
independent shops.
Chances are the crowds will
be smaller at these shops
and you may have access to
a more unique selection of
gifts than you would find at
the nearby mall.

Holiday
films
to lift
your
spirits
M

any families have their own

unique holiday traditions,
but some traditions
transcend familial lines to become
an integral part of many peoples
holiday celebrations. One of the
more popular traditions during this
festive time of year is to watch a
favorite holiday film with family and
friends. With that in mind, the following are some of
the most beloved holiday movies ever to make it onto
the big screen.
Its a Wonderful Life: Perhaps no holiday film is
more beloved than this 1946 Frank Capra-directed
classic. Screen legend Jimmy Stewart plays a
desperate businessman contemplating suicide during
the holiday season. But a guardian angel helps him
realize all the good fortune in his life by showing
him what life might have been like if he had never
existed.
White Christmas: This 1954 song-and-dance
film stars Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye as a pair of
longtime friends and ex-military men who fall in love
with a sister act team that includes famous singer
(and aunt to George Clooney) Rosemary Clooney.
Crosby and Kaye join forces to save the failing
Vermont inn of their beloved former commander.
Miracle on 34th Street: Natalie Wood stars in this
1947 classic that follows the trial of Kris Kringle, who
claims to be Santa Claus and must prove otherwise

Bad Santa: Though not quite as heartwarming

as many holiday films, this 2003 black comedy stars
Billy Bob Thornton as miserable, alcoholic con man
Willie, who poses as a mall Santa Claus so he can
rob a department store safe on Christmas Eve. But in
spite of its rather raunchy take on the holiday season,
the film is ultimately a story of redemption as Willie
befriends a bullied youngster and begins to turn his
life around.
A Christmas Carol: Those looking for a more
traditional take on holiday films need look no further
than this 1951 adaptation of the Charles Dickens
novella, which tells the tale of bitter miser Ebenezer
Scrooge as he is haunted by three ghosts on
Christmas Eve.

ne of the more popular

traditions during this
festive time of year is to
watch a favorite holiday film with
family and friends.
