Two of the top teams in the state collide as the Bakersfield Drillers host the San
Marino Titans this Saturday, December 20th at 5 PM. Early season rankings have the
Titans at 6th in the state of California, with the Drillers right behind them in 7th.
Both rosters feature highly ranked wrestlers. Last season the Drillers placed 10th in
the State Championships team race, while the Titans finished 16th. Both teams have
two returning state medalists. Navonte Demison and Carlos Herrera both brought
home medals last year for the Drillers while Julian Flores and Evan Wick placed for
the Titans. With two talented teams facing o, this promises to be one of the most
exciting matches in the state this year. Be sure not to miss it, come out and support
your Drillers!

Drillers Dominate Second

Annual Rumble for the Rig
!
The Drillers once again kicked o the season by hosting the Rumble for the
Rig tournament in the BHS gym. The one day tournament drew opponents from all
over California. With nine finalists and five individual champions Bakersfield won the
team tournament for the second year in a row. The Drillers outscored second place
Oakdale (ranked 9th in the state) 135-99. Temecula Valley placed third with 97 points.

Taking 1st for the Drillers were Navonte Demison at 126 pounds, Josh Annis at
152 pounds, Sam Loera at 160 pounds, Antonio Gutierrez at 170 pounds, and Noah
Rodriguez at 184 pounds. Demison was also named the lower weight Outstanding
Wrestler of the tournament largely due to his exciting 7-5 victory over Oakdales
Nico Colunga, who was ranked 2nd in the state.

Izzak Olejnik, JJ Figueroa, Carlos Herrera, and Ricky Gonzalez all came up
short in the finals earning second place finishes. Gonzalez lost to his teammate and
cousin, Sam Loera, in the 160 pound final.

The Drillers remaining place-winners were Elias Rosales (3rd), Mark Rodriguez
(4th), Dillon Cravens (5th), RJ DeLaRosa (5th), Anthony Arenas (6th), and AJ
Barrientos (7th).

Drillers Travel to Oakdale,

Win Second Tournament of the Season
!
The Drillers traveled to Oakdale High School to compete at the James Riddle
Classic Tournament. Bakersfield won the tournament by a comfortable margin, their
second tournament win this season. Six Drillers won individual championships while
seven more placed in the top six. Navonte Demison was the first Driller to take 1st,
defeating Nico Colunga of Oakdale for the second week in a row. Carlos Herrera,
Ricky Gonzalez, Sam Loera, Antonio Gutierrez and Elias Rosales also claimed 1st
place finishes.

Izzak Olejnik and Dyllan Guillermo also advanced to the finals, but both
wrestlers had to settle for 2nd place. Dillon Cravens took 3rd place after losing in the
semi-finals. Daniel Schoene added a 4th place finish. Elijah Navarro and Anthony
Arenas each took 5th place and RJ DeLaRosa placed 6th.

Sam Loera won an exciting finals match against Nathan Pimental of Dos Palos,
currently ranked 12th in the state. Loera was losing for most of the match, but was
able to tie the score in the final seconds. Loera was able to win in overtime. Antonio
Gutierrez looked to be in an equally close match. Miguel Hernandez of Central
Catholic, ranked 14th in the state, was able to fend o Gutierrezs attacks, keeping
the first round scoreless. After that, Gutierrezs relentless pressure proved too much
for Hernandez. Gutierrez won the match by fall. Elias Rosales and Ricky Gonzalez
both put in dominating performances, comfortably winning their finals matches.
Carlos Herrera had a great tournament, winning two tight matches against very
skilled opponents from Oakdale in the semis and the finals.

It was a great early season performance for the Drillers who continue to
improve with each competition.
