U.S. and British Air Forces began
airlifting supplies to the nearly
2 million people in West Berlin

24 hours a day cargo planes carried food, fuel, and


other desperately needed supplies into the city.
This lasted 10 months.

May 1949: Soviets finally gave in and removed the


blockade.
