SAINT RITA

OF

CASCIA CHURCH

REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG

Dear Parishioners,

Rejoicing While Waiting for The Lord

THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD
IS UPON ME,
BECAUSE HE HAS ANOINTED ME
TO BRING GLAD TIDINGS
TO THE POOR.

The words of todays Alleluia versicle

from Isaiah captures well the joy-filled
spirit of The Third Sunday of Advent,
Gaudete Sunday. Particularly the words
glad tidings signal the joyful anticipation
of CHRISTMAS and its imminent
arrival. The first reading declares that
God sends forth glad tidings and

As the earth brings forth

its plants,
and a garden makes its
growth spring up,
so will the Lord God make
justice and praise
spring up before all nations.
Just so, it is OK, then, to open one
eye to the decorations and parties?
The words of an old Negro
spiritual come to mind:Oh Lord, I
cant sit down. My soul is so happy that I

cant sit down! After all, who wouldnt

be glad if real justice has finally been
delivered.
But wait!
Before we blindfold
ourselves and rush over to take a
whack at the Christmas donkey piata,
lets not lose sight of the gospel today
which reminds us that the Baptizer is
still crying out, Make straight the way
of the Lord! There is still Advent
soul searching to do and we would do
ourselves a disfavor if we were to pass
over St. Pauls challenge to Test
everything: retain what is good.
And though it is already Gaudete
Sunday, we still need to wait on the
Lord. Most of us would wait
forever for something truly worth
our while. Children at home or at
school can learn one of the most
important lessons of their lives by
a caring adult who shows them
how to plant a seed, enjoy
watching it poke through the dirt,
produce a first leaf, and then the
glorious flower. It was worth the

wait. We wait nine months for a

new human being to see first light,
definitely worth the wait. For other
things we can hardly wait, the
end is SO worth the whilethe return
of a loved one, the rendering of true
justice, the end of yet another war
truly worth the wait!
Waiting for Jesus is an art. Monks,
nuns, and mystics have specialized in it.
For those who have developed the art
of waiting on the Lord it is possible to
wait on him and do last minute
shopping at the same time. Different
from walking and chewing gum, an
abiding ability to wait on the Lord and
to do whatever other things at the same
time requires something so simple and
yet so challengingto ponder all
things in your heart. This gift and
talent was predicated of the Blessed
Mother by St. Luke the Evangelist. In
our remaining days of Advent let us go
to her to acquire her expertise in
waiting on the Lord and in giving him,
his hope and promise, his salvation, to
a weary world.

And so, rejoicing with you at the news

that our God is coming with his power,
with you I wait on the Lord at His coming
Msgr. Richard

My soul rejoices in my God!

Understanding Scripture
Most people are bothered by those
passages in Scripture which they cant
understand; butI have noticed that
the passages in Scripture which trouble
me most are those I do understand.
Mark Twain

Take this opportunity to prepare for

Christmas. We will gather as a group
for a short prayer service before
Confessions. There will be about 10
priests on hand to hear individual
confessions. Confessions should be
available until about 9 pm.

Reflection for the

Third Sunday of Advent
More than disciples
Each of todays four scriptural
rolesdisciple, prophet, apostle,
heraldforms a facet of our life in
Christ as we live it day by day.
Isaiah tells us that a prophet is
anointed, as we were anointed at our
baptism in water and the Spirit, to
bring glad tidings and to promote
Gods reign of healing, justice, and
peace.
An apostle, like Paul, is one who is
sent. Each of us, in his or her own
way, is sent by Christ to be a voice
of rejoicing, to encourage prophetic
voices in the world, and to make
sure that the work of the Spirit
thrives.
John the Baptist shows us the job of
the herald, making the Lords way
straight, announcing the coming of
the Light of the world.
Today we also hear from Mary,
model disciple. Her song, the
Magnificat, shows us the world we
must believe in and work for: one
in which God is praised, where
Gods favor is bestowed on the
humble, where the hungry are filled
and the rich are sent away empty, a
world that continues to know and
rejoice in the mercy of God that
lasts for all ages.

Capital Campaign
Q: We have been waiting to see some work begin
on the Capital Campaign projects. When will that
happen?
A. Before any major renovations or new construction
can be done, a Master Plan needs to be submitted to
the City and to the Archdiocese. The St. Rita Design
Commission is hopeful that can be done in the next
few months. In the meantime, we will be starting with
some renovations to the Church, which is the center
of our parish and school. In fact, a roofing company is
prepared to begin installing our new roof as soon as
the weather forecast looks promising!
As this
happens, please join us in prayers of gratitude for the
donors who are making it all possible!
(Details and an explanation about a Master Plan were
highlighted in the November 2 bulletin. Copies of the
article are available by calling the Parish Office.)
Q: Will Mass schedules and other Church services
change or be moved during church renovations?

A: We are working to assure that the church schedule

will not be disrupted, and that is our goal. The new
roof installation work will be completed in a one-totwo week window and will be done in such a way that
the Church is available, especially for weekend Masses.
