Teaching and Effective Teacher- An International Perspective and Comparison.

On Being an Effective Teacher.

Considering across section of literature about the study of effective teaching in the following
headings;

1.

The General Teaching of any subject.

2.

Methodology of Teaching at High school.

3.

The Teaching Resources particularly practicals.

4.

The Teaching syllabus.

5.

School Organisation.

6.

Elements of attitudes and perception of various subjects.

What all the great teachers appear to have in common is love of their subject, an obvious
satisfaction in arousing this love in their students, and an ability to convince them that all they are
being taught is deadly serious.
The concept of a good teacher is relative but one can point out some key variables for a good
teacher;

i)

Understanding classroom dynamics.

ii)

Develops interpersonal skills and style.

iii)

Analyses and improves classroom performance.

iv)

Selects and organises materials for class presentation.

v)

Entrances learning through classroom discussion.

vi)

Plans course content to maximise interest.

vii)

Integrates learning in and out of classroom.

viii)

Evaluates students performance through tests and grading.

One can also point out that proper teaching comes from a teacher who fulfills the qualities below;

i)

Organised and business like.

ii)

Warm, lively, understanding, not dully and gloomy.

iii) Stimulating and imaginative while some maintains that a professional teacher
should have the following qualifies if any worthy teaching is to be expected of him:i)

A mastery of the subject to be taught.

ii)

An understanding of the basic principles of children growth and development.

iii)

A good general knowledge.

iv)

A knowledge of methods and teaching techniques.

v)

A positive attitude to work.

vi)

A willingness to adopt his or her teaching to local needs taking into consideration
the materials available.

vii)

Courages to struggle for better standards and conditions in the school.

In any teaching learning situation, there are numerous variables of which the most important are;

- The student (their values, attitudes, and existing knowledge),

- The resources, the teachers, and those of the local areas, the society which the school system is
apart,
- And the content (knowledge) or attitudes or values) which is to be taught.

Proper teaching therefore does not come by chance. The teacher must have due regard for the
quality of his work. He must exhibit self-respect and should be able to account for other related
variables that affect the teaching learning process. From the outlook its important to analyse
whether the teacher, understudies his responsibilities in terms of relating to a number of variables
surrounding him, later on to create an impact on the performance of the students is any subject.

The teachers should know the subject, extra hardworking, creative and innovative, dynamic and
generally flexible, and above all responsible in other words;

Teaching requires knowledge of subject matter persons and pedagogy. It

demands principle and strategic thinking about ends, means and consequences.
