Application
Magnesium is an important alloying
element in most medium strength and
some high strength wrought Aluminium
alloys such as the international standard
AA 6000 and AA 5000 series. It also
features as a major element in foundry
casting alloys.
The presence of Magnesium in Aluminium
alloys:
• imparts heat treatable properties in
balanced combination with Silicon
• enhances corrosion resistance e.g. for
marine applications.
Although addition as elemental
Magnesium is common, the use of a
master alloy is sometimes preferred as it
offers the following advantages:
• improved metal yield due to less burn off
compared with pure Magnesium
additions
• higher accuracy in composition
adjustments to meet tight specified
composition limits.
• reduced risk of harmful oxide or spinel
formation.
Product description
AlMg master alloys are available in lumps
- broken 7 kg waffle plate. The lumps are AlMg25% 200x Al3Mg2 phase in Al matrix
packed in pallet boxes. The packaging is
colour coded according to international
standards. Each pallet carries a label Metallographic structure
clearly showing the batch number and The phase diagram indicates that
nominal alloy composition. Magnesium is predominantly present as
the intermetallic compound Al3Mg2.
Photomicrographs of the AlMg 25 master
alloy show the globular shaped phase to be
uniformly dispersed in an Aluminium
matrix.

Recommended addition practice

1. Remove any dross from the Aluminium
bath surface
2. Add the master alloy to the bath at
normal operating temperature before
degassing and casting.
3. Stir the bath well after addition to
ensure homogeneity and optimum
recovery of the alloying element.

Storage
The alloy must be stored in a dry area to
avoid excessive oxidation.
