*The Nervii warriors are fierce and good fighters. They must be fielded in separated divisions from their allies.
**The Nervii allies are the Atrebates and Viromandui tribes which were used to join in for battle on request
from their illustrious neighbours.
***Plashed woods : The army must include 1 plashed wood section. In addition it may buy up to two
additional plashed wood sections at a cost of 3 points each. Plashed wood sections are treated as linear
obstacles. However, if you buy one or more additional sections your terrain selections are limited to 4
(instead of 5 as stated above). Each plashed wood section is wide enough to cover a single WB units front.
Plashed wood sections must be placed before deployment, and may only be placed in woods. In addition the
limit of Advanced Armati section 16 (page 31) does NOT apply!!!

(d) : As the country isn't a cavalry one, Nervii noble are use to fight on foot so i think they can dismount to
join the infantry force.
Design Notes
This list involve the best of the Belgae tribes ; The Nervii and some of theirs allies. Caesar described them as
the bravest of all the tribes of Gaul (".Omnium popularum Gallorum Belgae fortissimi sunt.." as he said). This
tribe was nearly to defeat the great Caesar at the Sambis battle in a full scale battle planned as a mega army
ambush!
As a very independent tribe, the Nervii were used with ambush warfare and fights in wooden area. Gallic
Belgium was like Germany, a heavily wooden and marshy country. Woods were sometime "fortified" with
strong hedges into impenetrable barriers.

Army Notes
*Carroccio WG does not need to be "prepared": The wagon may not charge. It cannot voluntarly contact
any enemy units. It may be contacted by enemy units.
*The 6 FV of the WG includes the Carroccio's fanatic foot guard (the "Company of the Death"), so that only
one unit is allowed to be chosen, not both.
Design Notes
About Control
Feudal armies of this period usually have a heavy control of 3. I went up to 4 for the following reason:
The Communal Armies relied heavily on infantry and often were stiffened up with large contingents of Allies.
To make it a slight more manageable (more than large WB armies, Scots and Irish, in exemple), and
considering the presence of the Carroccio, too, I allowed them an Heavy Control of 4. So, there should be
two infantry battles, one of them including Carrocio and two wings of cavalry, that was the typical
deployment of the period, as you know. (Otherwise, you'll risk to have a too large infantry block in the
centre, or an exposed flank...).
The Carroccio
The Carroccio is included as an optional unit since some Cities had not it or preferred not to use it in some
battles. For example, it was not used in the Montaperti battle nor by Florentine nor by Senese armies (the
Florentine's one was left at the camp but the foot guard were detached to the battle with the rest of the army).
Thus that is allowed by these rules.
The LC
As for why is there so little light horse in the army, during this period, light cavalry were not employed by
Commons, because of the particular nature of the Army. There were mainly foot militia and noble or
mercenary heavy cavalry. Light horses has never been particularly employed by Italian armies. The
exceptions are the Saracens in the Sicilian Army and probably some borderers units in the Venetian republic.

However, at the battle of Montaperti, there was a small unit of "exotic" mounted bowmen accompanying a
noble that brought them from a crusade. So, perhaps other units of light horses fought in Italy in that period,
but they were not very widespread. That is the reason why I have included only 1 small LC unit in the list.

The early T'ang was a very different period to and separated from the later by the revolt An Lu-shan in 755
which critically damaged the T'ang state. Before this date it was a sort after thing for each family's second son
to be called up for service in the Pu-ping system. However after that it was an appointment to be avoided by
all means possible.
This list is concentrated on the emergence of the T'ang under Li Shih-min who became its second emperor.
This is probably the most aggressive period in all Chinese history. The early Tang expanded the Chinese
empire more than any dynasty before or since. It fought and won almost as far west as Samarkand and all
along the silk road, of course.
There were various invasions of Tibet, Korea (where it was initially successful in cooperation with its Silla

allies working from the South) into and beyond the Tarim Basin and into Mongolia. It was its series of wars
against Tibet that caused the development of a series of military provinces that led to the disastrous revolt of
An Lu-shan, a general of Turkish birth, in 755. So this is the date which marks the end of the Early Tang
period.

Perhaps it would be fair to show a revised Spanish Army list, taking into account the comments made earlier
by Steve Phenow, both about Spanish and Hebrew LHI in Biblical times. The new rule here is for Spanish
who have been equipped and\or trained to fight by civilised nations LHI, while others are just tribal bands LI.

Roman troops (mutineers or otherwise), tended to degrade when mutinous, or rebel when in long contact

If Romans are used, the command stand should have a Roman General.
Warbands may not be left out of control.
Sertorius was an extremely successful rebel Roman General who aside from his own troops received 53
cohorts of reinforcements. 4000 of his Spanish were equipped with armour and weapons and organised to
fight in units. Those who wish to simulate this should consider the suggestions for LHI conversion outlined
above. NOTE These LI units will not count as core units.
