ABOUT THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HISPANIC JOURNALISTS

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is dedicated to the recognition and professional
advancement of Hispanics in the news industry. Established in April 1984, NAHJ created a national voice
and unified vision for all Hispanic journalists.

NAHJ has approximately 2,300 members, including working journalists, journalism students, other
media-related professionals and journalism educators. Here are some highlights from 2009:

CONVENTION STUDENT PROGRAMS

STUDENT CAMPUS
This intensive, three-day program is conducted at a local
college or university and is designed for college students in the
early stages of their career development. The 25 students in
this program participate in training, tours, mock press
conferences and career-building exercises in classrooms,
television studios, media outlets, the streets and
neighborhoods of Denver, and government or other types of
institutions. The program also features workshops and
seminars on journalism ethics, obtaining newsroom internships,
how to make the most out of the networking experience at
the convention and on various ways to tell a good story in this
age of multimedia journalism. Journalism professors and
professionals offer the students a real perspective on the
working world of journalism today and helps them gain
awareness of their respective communities.
Sponsorship: $50,000 ($25,000 for co-sponsorship)

STUDENT PROJECTS
NAHJ has developed a converged model for its long-time
media training project that features a team of students and
media professionals working in a newsroom setting and
provides students with a great opportunity to get hands-on
training in daily journalism. The Latinoreporterdigital.org
website will deliver constantly updated breaking news and
information produced by the projects, which will operate as a
single newsroom. Forty student journalists will get front-end
training in the skills needed to create and distribute news and
information in today’s changing environment. The students will
focus on producing content for the interactive website, but will
also produce a 30 minute TV newscast and radio podcasts that
will stream on-demand over the web. Students will additionally
produce two issues of a newspaper. The project team will
produce blogs, videos, slide shows and deliver news via mobile
and social networking technologies, all while sharpening their
journalistic skills.
