Course goals:
to acquaint students with basic methods of strength of materials and also with some problems
of theory of elasticity
Didactic methods:
Students prepare a topics on concrete problem and discuss it with teacher.
Grading criteria:
written exam
Subject contents:
Generalized theories for elastic systems. Total elastic strain energy. Generalized forces and
displacements. Bettis reciprocity of works principle and reciprocity of displacements principle.
Displacements of linear elastic systems Castigliano theorem and Maxwell-Mohr method.
Statically indetermined structures. Some methods for solving statically indetermined cases:
Menabrea theorem, Maxwell-Mohr method (method of forces), compatibility of displacements
method. Thermal stresses and assembling stresses.
Curved bars. Internal forces and stress distribution in curved bars. Strain energy due to bending
of curved bars. Localization of neutral axis. Formulation of strength criteria and calculation of
displacements. Curved bar in statically indetermined structures.
Some engineering problems of elasticity theory. Thin-walled axi-symmetrical vessels subjected
to internal pressure. Bending of rectangular plates to a cylindrical surface. Symmetrical
bending of a circular plates. Thick-walled tubes subjected to internal pressure. Rotating disks.
Some dynamics problems of elastic systems. Entirely elastic impact dynamic forces, stresses
and displacements. Axial impact in vertically and horizontally located prismatic bar. Impact
problems of bending and torsion.
Elasto-plastic systems. Beams on elastic foundations. Strength of elements of material which
does not follow Hookes law. Bending of beams beyond the elastic limit. Inelastic torsion of
shafts.
Course objectives:
skill of making diagrams of internal forces, calculating stresses and strains in uniaxial and
complex loading states, formulating of strength and stiffness conditions, obtaining critical
loading and designing of cross-sections
