KERALA
State Approves Two Firms to Start Windpower Units
The Kerala Government has given its technical
sanction to two private companies for setting up wind
power units, one at Ramakkalmedu in Indukki district
and the other at Agaly in Palakkad district.
The unit at Ramakkalmedu will have an installed
power generation capacity of 975 MW and the one at
Agaly 48 MW.
The first will go on stream by September and the
second by December 2007. Vestas Wind Technology
India Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Vestas Group, Denmark, is promoting the Ramakkalmedu project. The other project is being set up by Suzlon
Energy Limited.

The windy heights of Ramakkalmedu hills have an


estimated potential to generate 200 MW of wind energy
and the Agaly hills has the similar potential. Both the
companies will set up their units on land purchased by
them. Transmission lines to evacuate power from these
places will be drawn by the Kerala State Electricity Board.
It is the first step in the State Governments efforts to
exploit sources of non-conventional energy.

MADHYA PRADESH
Rs. 544 crore Rural Health Plan Approved
A Rs. 544 crore State Level Working Plan has been
approved under the National Rural Health Mission
(NRHM) keeping in view successful implementation of
health services and programmes in Madhya Pradesh.
This plan would help in augmenting and streamlining health services at the district, development block and
village levels. This money would be used in ensuring safe
delivery through the State Governments Janani Suraksha
Yojna as well as the family welfare programme,
vaccination and other national health programmes.
Britains Department of International Development
(DFID) has approved a grant of Rs. 492 crore for
improving health services in Madhya Pradesh. The
fund would be routed to the state over a five year period
(2007-12).

MEGHALAYA
State Allocated Rs. 1481 crore to Meet Rural
Drinking Water Supply Requirements
The Ministry of Rural Development has sanctioned
Rs. 1481 crore to the State Government of Meghalaya
towards balance of first instalment of funds against the
provisional allocation of Rs. 4446 crore made for the State
Government under Accelerated Rural Water Supply
Programme (Normal) of Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking
Water Mission, during the year 2007-08.
Upto 15 per cent of funds released under this sanction
may be utilized for operation and maintenance and upto 5
per cent of funds may be spent for taking sustainability
measures.

State Government Levies New Taxes in the
New Budget
The Punjab Government on June 20, 2007 proposed to
raise tax on non-ferrous minerals and state lottery draws,
besides imposing a levy on Change of Land Use (CLU) as
part of the Rs. 29,890 crore budget for 2007-08. The state
expects to generate an additional revenue of Rs. 460 crore
per year with the imposition of taxes.
The budget, showing a deficit of Rs. 57041 crore,
proposes to levy CLU charges throughout the state. This
