Aims and objectives

o Aim: To enable participants to use the
further features of NVIVO 9 as follows:
o Objective data analysis: further types of linking;
a range of finds and queries including word and text
searches, coding, and matrix searches; collections
of project items
o Objective data reporting: To represent graphically
research assumptions, hunches and findings using
NVIVO Models, charts and visualisations;
o Objective: To extract or export project items for use
e.g. in research write-ups
106

How NVIVO 9 can help

Part 2 of the course:
Links between ideas/items
Search and scope filtering with sets and attributes to
ask questions and develop and test ideas & theories
Models, charts and visualisations to display ideas and
theories
Reports extraction for inclusion in written work
YOU, with your research questions, select and
drive/control the software to help you manage,
collect, engage with and get evidence for your
research claims/ results/ recommendations.

107

Link types
o Annotations: For footnotes or margin scribbles on selected
content in a source/ node (blue shading)
o Memos: Comments/reflections on an entire
document/node/ or concepts /ideas that may become
your writings
o External links/hyperlinks: links to material external to the
NVIVO project e.g. files or websites
o See also links for connections between project items (pink
shading) 108
o Hyperlinks to external files or websites

108

Starting with Part 2

Sets vs. Search folders

o Sets are collections of items you select
and are fixed unless you add items
manually
o Search folders are collections that
meet criteria you select. They update if
new items are added to the project
that meet those criteria
o Before you run an Advanced Find you
can Add to project as search folder
to create and name a search folder
115
for the results.

o Some queries have Query Options where you can
select to Preview (an unsaved listing of where the
content was found) OR Create as New Node (or
New Set) etc. (Also have to name it to save it)
o Each query requires Criteria specific to the type of
query
o Run carries out the search
o OK does NOT run the search but only saves those
you chose to Add to Project
o Results in the Results folder are not editable move
any you need to work with from there to e.g. Nodes
