Q.1 The vertical component of the landing speed of a parachute is to be less

than 5 m/s. The parachute may be treated as an open hemisphere. The total
mass of chute and jumper is 100 kg. Determine the minimum diameter of the
open parachute. Take Cd = 1.40 and ρ = 1.20 kg/m3.

Q.2 A kite is flying in sky having mass of 0.1 kg with an area of 0.25
M2.The free stream air moving over the kite by 10 m/s. The kite makes
an angle of 100 with the horizontal. If the string makes an angle of 600
with the horizontal, determine the tension in the string. Take Cl = 2 π
sinα and ρ = 1.20 kg/m3.

Q.3 An aeroplane is flying with a speed of 200m/s. The chord area of each
of wing is 10 m2 (which having 2 wings). The air resistance of all the parts
other than the 2 wings is 30 % of the total wing resistance. The efficiency of
propeller is equal to 85 %. The Cl & Cd at angle of incidence of flight are
0.30 & 0.02 respectively. Determine the lift and power required to drive the
airoplane. The pressure and temperature at the altitude of the flight are 50
kpa and 220 K.

Q.4 Consider the Nortrop F-5 lighter airplane, The plane has a wing area of
16 m2. The wing is generating 80 KN of lift for a flight velocity 12
km/min at standard sea level. Determine the lift coefficient. The wing
span of the flighter plane is 5 m. Calculate the drag coefficient and
induced drag it self. Assume span efficiency factor e=0.8 and ρ = 1.20
kg/m3.

Q.5 An airfoil of chord length 2 m and span 12m has an angle of attack as 60.
The airfoil is moving with a velocity of 70 m/s in air whose density is 1.20
kg/m2. Find the weight of the airfoil and the power required to drive it the
values of co-efficient of drag and lift corresponding to angle of attack are
given as 0.03 and 0.5 respectively.

Q.6 A jet plane which has a weight of 30000N and has a wing area of 20 m2
flies at a velocity of 250 km/hr. When the engine delivers 7357.5 kW.
Where 65% of the power is used to overcome the drag resistance of the
wing. Calculate the coefficient of loft and coefficient of drag for the wing.
Take density of air = 1.20kg/m3.
Q.7 The air having a velocity of 50 m/s is flowing over a cylinder of
diameter 2m and length 10m, when the axis of cylinder is perpendicular to
the air stream. The cylinder is rotated about its axis and a lift of 7000N per
meter length of the cylinder is developed. Find the speed of rotation and
location of the stagnation points. Take ρ = 1.20 kg/m3.

The plane spans 15m and has a wing surface area of 35 m2:
(a) Determine the lift coefficient and the power required to drive the
plane. Assume drag coefficient Cd=0.04 & ρ =1.20 kg/m3.
(b) Also work out the theoretical value of the boundary layer circulation.

Q.9A plane is moving at a velocity of 550m/hr at a standard altitude of

38,000 ft,where the free stream pressure and temperature are 432.6 lb/ft2 and
390 on fifth scale model of the 747 is tested in a wind tunnel where the
temperature is 430 K. Calculate the required velocity and pressure of the test
airstream such that the lift and drag coefficient measured for the wind tunnel
models are the same as for free flight. Assume µ and c are proportional to
√T.

Q.10 The resisting force F of a plane during flight can be considered as

dependent upon the length of the air craft I, velocity v, air viscosity µ ,air
density ρ and bulk modulus k. Express the functional relationship between
these variables and the resisting force using dimensional analysis. Explain
