4.1.1 Application
As defined in the GSM protocols, the maximum timing advance (TA) value is 63. And the
coverage radius of the cell cannot exceed 35 km. However, in the regions with vast land but
scattered subscribers and low traffic or in the regions where the infrastructure facilities such
as transmission and power supply are hard to be constructed or unavailable, the cell that its
radius is more than 35 km is needed.
In theory, the coverage radius of the extended cell can reach up to 120 km. With the extended
cell function, the operators can fast construct their GSM networks with fewer sites and lower
cost, and thus attract the mobile subscribers in special regions so as to increase the revenue.
4.1.2 Availability
All GSM BSS versions support the extended cell function.
4.1.3 Restrictions
To use this function, the License is needed.
