Application for permanent residence

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) provides a website for all primary
information about visas.
This website contains comprehensive information about the range of visa products, eligibility, forms,
fees and application procedures. For key visa types, there are checklists and step-by-step guides to help
you make your application.

In order to assist you identify the most appropriate visa product to suit your circumstances, the
Department has developed the Find a Visa tool.

For general information about migration to Australia, read information form 1126i Migrating to
Australia, or visit the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (the department) website
www.immi.gov.au/immigration/.
The Form 1126i (available from the website www.immi.gov.au/immigration/) will help you choose the
permanent visa category and application form best suited for you.
Booklets with detailed information and application forms on each visa category are available free of
charge from the website www.immi.gov.au/immigration/.
Each booklet provides an explanation about the criteria to be met, includes application forms, visa
application charge and the contact details of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection
office (DIBP) where the application must be sent for processing.
Information on the Skilled Occupation List is available on the Department of Immigration and Border
Protection website http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/sol/.
Application to work in Australia:
Information on the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) visa is available on the website
http://www.immi.gov.au/Visas/Pages/457.aspx.
The Temporary Work (Skilled) (subclass 457) visa is designed to enable employers to address labour
shortages by bringing in genuinely skilled workers where they cannot find an appropriately skilled
Australian.
The subclass 457 visa is the most commonly used program for employers to sponsor overseas workers
to work in Australia on a temporary basis.

The subclass 457 visa allows businesses to employ overseas workers for up to 4 years in skilled
occupations only.
Subclass 457 visa holders can:
-

work in Australia for a period of between one day and 4 years

bring any eligible dependants with them to Australia dependants can work and study

after entering Australia, have no limit on the number of times they can travel in and of
Australia
