Installation

ARIS

Installations

Installations
This chapter lists the conditions associated with each of the different
installations. Each installation is outlined in step-by-step instructions.
The instructions assume that you will be carrying out the installations
for the first time, using the ARIS_7.exe startup file. You can also
run the relevant installation programs directly using the corresponding
Setup.exe file.
If an installation changes system files, you will be prompted to reboot
your computer after installation.
See the ARIS Administration Manual for further settings required to
use an ARIS product.
If you run the installation for an installed program for a second time,
you will be offered the following options:

Modify
You can use this option to add additional components and/or
languages.
The check boxes for components and languages that are already
installed are checked. The suffix (installed) will also be appended to
the names of the languages already installed.
Enable the check boxes for the required components and languages
and follow the instructions in the installation program. The check boxes
for installed components and languages cannot be cleared.

Repair
This option repeats installation with your previous settings. This is
useful if you have accidentally deleted a program file for example. Any
subsequently installed hotfixes will be deleted!

ARIS

Installation

Installations

Remove
This option uninstalls the component for which the installation program
was called.
If you carry out an update, add a language (Modify option) or
repeat an installation (Repair option), the system will check to
see if you have changed a CFG file manually. If you have, a
backup copy of that file will be made before the new CFG file is
installed. For example, if you have modified the arisserver.cfg
file manually, this file will be backed up in the <ARIS
installation directory>\server\backup\config directory
(see also chapter 5.3).
The settings from your previous installation are retained, e.g.
installation path, program group and language installed.

3.1

ARIS Platform - CD 1
In this chapter, the installations and contents of the CD ARIS
Platform CD 1 are described.

3.1.1

Client Installation
This chapter describes the installation of ARIS Clients.
When you install ARIS Business Architect or ARIS Business
Designer, ARIS UML Designer is also installed automatically.
You only have access to the functionality of ARIS UML
Designer if you have purchased the corresponding license key.
The ARIS WITH STANDARD LOCAL DATABASE SYSTEM
installation also installs the standard database system. This
means that you can create and edit databases on your
computer, and also work with databases on other ARIS
servers. Please note that not all ARIS products can access the
local standard database system.
The ARIS WITHOUT LOCAL STANDARD DATABASE
SYSTEM installation does not install the standard database
system. This means that you can only create and edit
databases by connecting to ARIS servers. If you want to be
able to work locally as well, select ARIS WITH LOCAL
STANDARD DATABASE SYSTEM.

1.

Ensure that the system requirements for all products and

functionalities are satisfied (see Administration Guide).

2.

Insert ARIS Platform CD 1 into the CD drive. If the start page is

not displayed automatically, click on the name of your CD drive in
Windows Explorer and launch the ARIS_7.exe program.

3.

Click on ARIS Platform. The installation program's Welcome page is

displayed.

You can use ARIS Converter (see chapters ARIS Converter
and Transferring Data from Earlier Versions of ARIS in
the Administration Manual) to transfer databases that were
created with previous ARIS versions.
Subsequent or update installations are carried out in the
same way as a server installation (see chapters 3.2.1.1.2
and 3.2.1.1.2).

3.1.2

Demo Version ARIS 7.0

If you want to test ARIS Business Architect or ARIS Toolset, contact
the Customer Inter@ction Center of IDS Scheer at ++49 (0) 6 81-2 10

You can test the modeling functionality (without variants) in ARIS with
a standard local database for 40 days.
If you purchase ARIS, you can continue to use the database and
models you created with the demo version.
Demo versions have the following limitations:

The database is labeled on login and marked as expired after 40 days.

You cannot create or remove any variants.

When running a report, a special note is inserted every 15 lines.

The components of the demo version cannot be configured (Script

Editor and Administration modules in ARIS Business Architect are not

ARIS Web Client Components

If you wish to use ARIS via a browser, you must install the ARIS
Web Client components.
The ARIS Web Client components use only passive Web server
components.
ARIS Web Client Components and Web Server
Before the ARIS Web Client components can be used by your Web
server, you must make one of the following settings:

Provide a drive mapping for the WWW root of the Web server.

Install the ARIS Web Client components in a temporary directory. Then

transfer the files to your Web server.
Note that this procedure means that the ARIS Web Client
components cannot be included in the automatic update. In
this case, you must update the ARIS Web Client components
separately.

Run ARIS Business Server setup (for the Web Client components) on
the computer on which you have installed your Web server. Enter the
path to the WWW root, e.g. C:\inetpub\wwwroot\.
ARIS Web Client Components and HTML Generator
The index.html and aris_database.html files are updated by the
HTML Generator during system operation (see chapter Fehler! Es
wurde kein Textmarkenname vergeben. HTML Generator Current Database Lists in the Administration Manual). The HTML
Generator is configured using the ARIS Business Server
arisserver.cfg file and uses the templates located in the <ARIS
Business Server>\templates\htmlgen directory. It is launched
every time a database is created, deleted or renamed.

ARIS

Installation

35

Installations
The following directories are created:
\lan
This is the directory normally used for launching. It launches ARIS Web
Client as an applet and allows direct access to the ARIS Business
Server.
\ssl
If you select this directory for launching ARIS Web Client, data
exchange is encrypted (see chapter SSL - Encryption of Data
Transmission Using Secure Socket Layer in the Administration
Manual).
\app
If you select this directory for launching ARIS Web Client, it will be run
as an application, not as an applet (see chapter Execution as Applet
or Application in the Administration Manual).
Please note that the output and backup paths must be modified
accordingly in the <htmlgen> section of the arisserver.cfg file. If
you are using several ARIS Business Servers, you must change the
paths on the computer on which you have installed ARIS Site
Manager.
Example: <outputpath path="e:/inetpub/wwwroot/aris70"/>
<backuppath path="e:/inetpub/wwwroot/aris70/backup"/>
The following describes the operations the installation program
performs when you install ARIS Web Client components.

ARIS Platform - System Architecture
ARIS Platform includes the following components:

ARIS Business Server

Database server (standard database system or other)

ARIS Toolset/ARIS Easy Design, each with ARIS Converter and ARIS
Site Administrator, ARIS Business Architect, ARIS Business Designer,
ARIS UML Designer, ARIS Business Optimizer

Installation

47

Additional Installation Information and Principles

Please note that ARIS Platform is not an update to ARIS
versions 6.1x and 6.2x. The client and server versions can be
installed and run in parallel.

5.2

Installation Scenarios
An overview of all possible installation modes is given in
chapter 2 Step-by-step instructions for each type of
installation are provided in chapter 3

This section includes example scenarios. These will help you identify
the correct configuration for your installation. ou should clarify your
requirements by asking the following questions:
1.

Are you working with ARIS Platform on one computer?

In this case, a local installation is sufficient (see chapter 3.1.1).
On the other hand, if several users will be working with ARIS Platform
simultaneously, you must ask yourself the following question:

2.

How many users do you expect to be working with ARIS Platform at

the same time?
The answer to this question determines which database server you can
use and how many ARIS Business Servers you need.
If up to 50 users will be working with ARIS Platform, you can install a
default server (see chapter 3.2.1.1). The standard database system
will also be installed with this installation.
If more than 50 users will be working with ARIS Platform, you will
have to install ARIS Business Server and Database Server on different
computers, and you will need to use a database system other than the
standard system. You must decide how many ARIS Business Servers
are to be used.

3.

Will you be using ARIS Business Architect/ARIS Business

Designer/ARIS UML Designer as an application or via a browser?
ARIS Business Architect/ARIS Business Designer/ARIS UML Designer
can either be installed or called with a browser. Calling with a browser

48

Installation

ARIS

Additional Installation Information and Principles

causes automatic software distribution. In this case, you will need the
ARIS Web Client components (see chapter 3.2.1.4).
If you are installing ARIS Business Architect/ARIS Business
Designer/ARIS UML Designer (see chapter 3.1), you do not need to
install the ARIS Web Client components. This will also help you to
avoid possible problems with the JRE, as the appropriate JRE is
installed and used. Any previously installed JRE version that is used by
your other programs will remain unchanged. In the case of an update,
you must perform a separate update for each installed client if you do
not use the auto-update tool. With the auto-update tool, you can
automatically update installed clients from a central server (see the
Administration Manual for more details on this).
Of course, application scenarios are possible in which ARIS Web
Business Architect/ARIS Business Designer/ARIS UML Designer are
called with a browser by some users and installed by others.
Regardless of whether ARIS Business Architect/ARIS Business
Designer/ARIS UML Designer is called via a browser or installed, it can
be operated in the WAN (for the definition of WAN, see the glossary in
the Administration Manual).
If you install the default server (see question 2), the ARIS Web Client
components will be installed as well. In this case, for your Web server
you only need to enter the path to the ARIS Web Client components
(<ARIS installation directory>\Server\HTML) if you want to call ARIS
Business Architect/ARIS Business Designer/ARIS UML Designer via a
browser.

ARIS

Installation

49

Additional Installation Information and Principles

To install several ARIS Business Servers (see question 2), you can
carry out the user-defined installation (see chapter 3.2.1.2). This
allows you to install individual components separately:

You can install several ARIS Business Servers.

You can install ARIS Web Client components on any computer, e.g. in a
directory on your Web server.

You can install ARIS Site Manager with the standard database system
or with a different system on a separate computer.

4.

Do you intend to use ARIS Business Designer for modeling on the

intranet or Internet?
The answer to this question will determine for example how your
network must be scaled or whether encryption measures are required
for data exchange (see chapter SSL - Encryption of Data
Transmission Using Secure Socket Layer in the Administration
Manual).

5.

Do you want to transfer large quantities of data or complex model

structures from ARIS to ARIS Business Optimizer?
In this case, carry out a user-defined installation (see chapter
3.2.1.2).

If you intend to implement a scenario for more than 200

users, please contact our Customer Inter@ction Center. You
will find their telephone numbers, Web access and email
address in the Administration Manual.

Special Cases: ARIS Client and ARIS Server on the

Same Computer
ARIS Client and ARIS Server use shared components; these
components only need to be installed once on each computer.
Therefore there are certain aspects that you have to take into
consideration when ARIS Client and ARIS Server are installed on the
same computer.
If you make any changes to ARIS Client or ARIS Server, you must
ensure that ARIS Client and ARIS Server both have the same version
after these changes and that they are installed with the same
languages:

When you update a version, you must therefore ensure that it is applied
to both ARIS Server and ARIS Client.

When you install additional languages, they must be installed for both
ARIS Server and ARIS Client.

Additional Installation Information and Principles

5.5.1

Installation
ARIS Client is already installed on the computer.
If you then install an ARIS Server, its installation directory will be
added automatically to the ARIS Toolset directory structure (<ARIS
installation directory>\server). In this case you do not need to enter
the installation directory for the ARIS Server a second time. When you
install the ARIS Server you must choose the same languages as for the
earlier ARIS Client installation.
To find out which ARIS Platform languages have been installed, run
ARIS Platform Setup again and choose the Modify option. The
installed languages are those activated on the Select Language page
of ARIS Setup. Once you have determined which languages are
installed, click on Cancel.

If you then install an ARIS Client, its files and directories will be
automatically integrated into the ARIS Server directory structure. In
this case you do not need to enter the installation directory a second
time for the ARIS Client.

as for the earlier ARIS Server installation.

Uninstall
You can uninstall both ARIS Server and the ARIS Clients individually
without affecting the functioning of the other component. The order in
which they were installed is unimportant.
