Berkeley, CA 94704 (619) 254-8587 RobertLim@berkeley.edu July 2, 2009 Ventana 660 3rd Street San Francisco, CA 94107 Dear Sir or Madam: I am writing to introduce myself as a candidate for the Healthcare Support Guide position with Ventana. I learned of the opportunity through your Craigslist posting while searching for opportunities in healthcare. I am a recent UC Berkeley graduate, with a B.A. in Molecular and Cell Biology. I believe my healthcare experience, aptitude for service and client-facing work, and passion for improving healthcare make me a great fit for the position. Through my undergraduate years, I have developed a keen interest in healthcare. For the past two years, I have served as a medic at the Berkeley Free Clinic, providing free of charge, nonjudgmental healthcare to members of my community. Clients walk into our clinic with a health problem, and through a 1.5-hour one-on-one appointment, we work together to determine the best way to approach their health issue. Sometimes this means administering antibiotics to treat an STD I am trained to address, and other times this means referring the client to another clinic. Because the clinic is completely volunteer-run, medics also work as a team to keep the clinic running, and I have taken on varied tasks and responsibilities ranging from billing and recruiting, to teaching classes. My duties as a medic have required adherence to high ethical standards, strong communication and interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a drive for personal impact and results. In addition to my experience as a provider, I also have a personal interest in the insurance side of healthcare. I enjoy acting as a patient advocate for friends and family, helping those I care about to navigate the system to receive the care they need and deserve. In serving as an advocate, I have become skilled at and accustomed to interpreting Evidence of Coverage contracts, interfacing with insurance companies and other third parties at different levels, and communicating effectively with the appropriate language. I am an expert in my own insurance coverage, and continuously ensure that I receive the best care possible, and the most utility from my health plan. The Health Support Guide position is exactly the type of work that I want to be doing, and Ventana is exactly the type of organization I want to work for. I am passionate about health, am an avid technology and internet junkie, and am driven by a strong desire to impact the way healthcare is perceived and approached. The position would allow me to pursue these passions while having a great time working in an organization with the same flat, consensusbased structure, philosophies, and vision that I have come to love and value in my work with the Berkeley Free Clinic. I would be thrilled to join your team. Please feel free to contact me to set up an interview, or if you need additional information. I very much appreciate your time and consideration, and I hope to hear from you in the near future.
