About IISc

About

IISc

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was conceived as a Research Institute or University of Research by Jamsetji Nusserwanji
Tata, in the final years of the 19th century. In 1909, an unmatched experiment in higher education and research was launched
in India. IISc is truly the first example of a public-private partnership in this country; an institution, whose evolution over a
century is testimony to the robustness of its foundations. The Institute occupies nearly 400 acres of prime land in Bangalore,
generously donated by the Maharaja of Mysore in March 1907.
The Institute began with only two departments: General and Applied Chemistry and Electro-Technology. Then the
Departments of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry were among the ones to be established. The Physics department came
into being in 1933, when C.V. Raman became the first Indian Director of the Institute. As the Institute has grown, several new
areas of research have been established, many of them for the first time in India. The Institutes departments in fields ranging
from Biochemistry to Aerospace Engineering have served to nucleate research and development in both the public and private
sectors. Many of Indias most distinguished scientists have been associated with the Institute as students or faculty. Notable
among them are Satish Dhawan, G.N. Ramachandran, Harish Chandra, S. Ramaseshan, A. Ramachandran, C.N.R. Rao and R.
Narasimha. Alumni of the Institute head many major organizations in India and abroad. The Institute offers a variety of
Masters degree programs in Engineering, an integrated Ph.D. (post-B.Sc.) program in Sciences and Ph.D. programs in a wide
spectrum of disciplines in science and engineering. The Institute hosts hundreds of visitors from India and abroad every year
and is the venue for many major national and international academic events.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has made the country proud, by

being the only Indian institute that has made it to the top 500 in
the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) which
was released by the Center for World-Class Universities at
Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It was ranked between 50100 in
Engineering/Technology and Computer Science in the QS World
University Rankings 2012-2013.
Top recruiters prefer the Bangalore science institute for its
research orientation. On the count of employability of its
graduates, the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore has a
unique distinction. It ranks 34 on the Global Employability List
for 2012, prepared by French consulting firm Emerging in
association with a German recruitment research institute,
Trendence. The only other Indian institution on this list is the
Indian School of Business in Hyderabad, which is at 149 on the
list of 150 educational institutions worldwide.
In latest World Reputation Rankings for 2013, Times Higher
Education (THE) magazine, UK, for the first time, has released an
# Times Higher Education (THE) magazine, UK
India top-10 list based on their global academic prestige.
http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-universityrankings/news/the-indian-reputation-rankings
According to The India Reputation Rankings, Indian Institute of
Science (IISc), Bangalore, is in the first position. The 2013
edition, published on 4 March 2013, is based on the results of a
survey of more than 16,600 experienced academics from all over the world who were asked to name a small number of the
"best" institutions in their field for both teaching and research. Times Higher Education revealed that the The Indian Institute
of Science (IISc) Bangalore has emerged the only Indian academic institution figuring in the worlds 100 most reputed
universities, according to first-ever reputation-based Times Higher Education rankings released. THE World Reputation
Rankings were to list more than just the top 100, IIT Bombay would sit in 192nd place, but all other Indian institutions would fall
outside a global top 200. In 2011, IISc was the only Indian institute ranked by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, at 5175 overall.

Engineering

Mechanical Engineering activities at the Indian Institute of Science commenced in 1945 with the establishment of the
Department of Internal Combustion Engineering that later merged with the subsequently created Mechanical Engineering
department. The initial work within the department was focused on more traditional Mechanical Engineering mainly
concerned with the design, manufacturing and operation of engines, machines, and manufacturing processes. This has resulted
in innovative products over the years, ranging from crankshafts for engines to micro- hydel turbines. The department from the
beginning has also had a strong history of the contributing to generate quality manpower for industry and research; a point
highlighted by the fact that the department for a considerable period of time ran a mini-thermal power station to train
engineers for the major power institutions of the country

Modelling and kinematic analysis of endoscopic tool

Robotic surgical tools used in minimally invasive surgeries (MIS) require reliable actuators for precise
positioning and control. Miniature pneumatic artificial muscles (MPAM) appear most suited for
actuating surgical devices because of their inert nature, high force to weight ratio and fast actuation.
These MPAM are to be modelled and kinematic analyzed and the same model is to be validated with
Anirudh R. experimental results from a fabricated model. Various factors like contraction ratio with actuation,
force developed is to be calculated from the model. Unlike the previous braid models friction is to be
included (which is a component that cannot be neglected). The whole project is part of development of
robotic surgical tools funded by BOSCH centre.

Tools: MatLab, Mathematica, Maple, Adams, Pro/E, C++ and CATIA

Pulsatile flow through a curved pipe

Fluid flow in curved ducts is of importance in several engineering applications such as pipe bends,
cooling and heating coils, blade passages of turbo-machinery, and aircraft intakes. The flow in curved
pipes differs from that in a straight pipe principally through exhibiting a secondary flow in planes
normal to the main flow. The work is motivated by blood flow in arteries. The research work involves
Ashlin Augusty setting up curved pipes which closely matches the physiological dimensions of a human aorta in size
and flow behaviors such as secondary flows, flow separation, pressure variation are studied for various
pulse profiles, fluids and cross sections of pipes. A computational model is setup in using ANSYS
Workbench to compare with the experimental data and to get more insight into the physics of the flow.

Tools: ANSYS Workbench

Modeling and analysis of heat pipe solar receiver
Solar receiver can be classified as directly and indirectly radiated solar receiver. The present work is on
the indirectly radiated solar receivers. The emphasis is on analysis of heat pipe solar receivers from
the point of view of various working fluids and to carry out relative comparison with other types of
receivers (such as volumetric receiver).

Thermodynamic analysis of ejector and its application in Ejector Refrigeration System (ERS)

In a Vapor Compression Refrigeration Cycle a compressor is used which consumes high grade energy
i.e. work. In ERS, this compressor is replaced by the combination of an Ejector, a Pump and a Generator
which consumes low grade heat in the temperature range between 80 to 150 C. This heat is available in
abundance from sources such as automobiles exhausts, industrial processes, solar and geothermal
Hitesh Kumar Gupta resources. A detailed investigation will be done on the above factors.

Tools: MatLab, ANSYS Fluent

Analytical solutions of 2-dimensional biharmonic equation
The elasticity solution of a two-dimensional domain with in-plane loading reduces to solving a
homogeneous biharmonic equation in airy stress function with specified displacement and traction
boundary conditions. The solutions existing in literature either consider semi-infinite domains or they
satisfy some of the boundary conditions in a weak sense. The aim of the project is to find solutions
Isha Gupta which satisfy the boundary conditions in an exact sense for different loading conditions.

Tools: MatLab, Mathematica

Phase field modelling of fracture, and validation using cohesive zone model
Development and implementation of a special phase field model, to detect crack path and a study of the
behaviour of the cracked body under various static and dynamic loading conditions will be undertaken
numerically. This will be done first, under purely elastic framework, and, elasto-plastic implementation
will follow, if time permits. Pure homogenous materials (metals), functionally graded materials and
R. Karthikeyan composites will be analyzed using this model. The above-mentioned results will be validated using a
cohesive zone model, which is a very popular and widely trusted model in numerical fracture study.

Tools: FEAP (using Intel PGI Fortran), MSC Patran, ANSYS, Abaqus, MatLab, FORTRAN 77

Vapour bubble dynamics

The Focus of this Project is on mechanisms of formation of two-phase mixtures of vapourand liquid.
Particular attention will be given to the process of the creation of vapour bubbles in a liquid and
alsodeal with the physics ofnucleation in engineering environments.

Flow-acoustic analysis of automotive mufflers with multiple baffles

Automotive mufflers which are multiply connected with intermediate baffles are analyzed acoustically.
In this study, using integrated transfer matrix approach the transmission loss which is independent of
source characteristics is analyzed analytically. Insertion loss which includes source information is
analyzed. The analytical results are compared with simulations using tool SYSNOISE. Considering
E. Ramya Teja various factors such as exhaust noise, back pressure, engine efficiency and size of muffler an optimized
design is obtained.

Numerical Simulation of a twostaged catalytic combustor and a single staged flameless combustor
Low Nox emission, complete combustion and a stable flame at lower temperatures (~ 1600 K) can be a
challenge when the combustor is being designed for a high turndown ratio (10 30 KW power output).
The present work tries to address these issues by designing a two-stage catalytic combustor and a
single stage flameless combustor (FLOX) operating on syngas. Commercial CFD codes, namely Ansys
Santanu Pramanik Fluent and KIVA is to be used for the simulations with reduced CHEMKIN mechanisms for
incorporation of chemistry into the simulations.

Tools: ANSYS Fluent, KIVA

Transition in vortical flow structure into various spray nozzles (Ultrasonic nozzle, Simplex nozzle)
by creating turbulence with swirling air core in unconfined non reacting atmosphere
The importance of a swirl spray nozzle lies in its widespread industrial applications in combustion,
drying, air-conditioning, gas turbines, industrial furnaces, utility boilers, etc. It has been clear that
swirl has large scale effects on flow fields such as jet growth, shape and stability being affected by swirl
Dilip S. Sanadi number imparted to the flow. We will examine how swirl- non reacting spray interaction will takes
place and how swirling air core will affect vortical flow structure with Ultrasonic nozzle and Simplex
nozzle.

Micromachined beam based speakers

My research work involves acoustics of Micro Electromechanical Systems applied to On-Chip

microspeakers. The phenomenon of low frequency emission from array of high aspect ratio beams of
MEMS scale can be applied to a complete audio system replacing conventional loudspeakers. The
proposed compliant beams operate in audible frequency range and have no bandwidth limitation. OnSaurabh Mittal Chip lithography reduces manufacturing costs and can be used in compact devices like mobile phones.
The work is inspired from sound systems like violin and bio-designs of crickets and flies.
