Easy Living
With vacation homes as the focus of
this months issue, Ive started thinking about my own summertime plans,
which have yet to be determined. For
a little inspiration, I turned to some
Atlanta tastemakers to see what
theyll be up to this year.
After six weeks of very unusual snow in Cashiers last winter, which caused a multitude of
plants to bid us farewell, we will be working atop Big Sheep Mountain getting things back into
shape. Winton Noah, co-owner, Ainsworth-Noah & Associates
Summer and vacation are now year-round for me. In April, my husband and I moved into
our new lakefront home, just south of Atlanta. Boating and shing and sticking my toes in the
water will take me to that place of peace, right in my own back yard. Every day will feel like a
vacation day. And of course, summer also means hosting the televised reworks program at
Lenox Square on the Fourth of July. Monica Pearson, anchor, WSB-TV
I look forward to spending as much time as possible riding my new horse, which I hope to
be getting in the next couple of months. No exotic summer tripsjust time in Cherokee County
riding and spending lazy summer days with my horse family Sandy and Allen on their beautiful
horse farm! Nancy Solomon, owner, Solomon Projects
I will be spending some quiet vacation timeand escaping the Atlanta heatin the Hudson
River Valley. A little over an hour outside New York City, I will most certainly make a stop at The
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) to nalize plans for the Highs next big exhibition, Picasso to
Warhol: Twelve Modern Masters, opening in October. Michael E. Shapiro, Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr. Director, High Museum of Art
Id love to know your plans, as well. Stay in touch with us this summer at

For this home at The Mansion on Peachtree, designer John Oetgen

created an elegant atmosphere, with a touch of his
trademark whimsy
thrown in. opposite Against
the otherwise neutral
scheme, a single red silk
pillow grabs your attention.
I think theres nothing better than a black suit with a
big, ol brooch on it, Oetgen explains. You can
change that brooch every
day; it can be rubies and diamonds one day, sapphires
and emeralds the next!
Thats all a pillow is. Its a
brooch for the room.

Ive always been a fan of Atlanta designer

John Oetgen. Somehow, he seems to know
exactly how to strike the right balance when
mixing the old and the new. Its really a skill to
be able to make it all seem so natural and
so not forced, and John has obviously
perfected this skill.

AROUND TOWN WITH

Looks like much of Atlanta is gearing up for next

months mass exodus to vacation homes hither and yon. Of
course, you have the usual suspects: Highlands, Cashiers, Sea
Island and Lake Rabun. But have you heard that Thomasville
is the new Aiken and Clayton is the new Tiger? Are you with
me? Good, because the new hot spots are changing so fast
that its making old Naomis head spin. I cant even discern
my Catoosa from Chattooga anymore.
Ive even heard a rumor that a certain well-known New
York designer has bought a house in a small South Georgia
town. Lets just hope for the sake of his Yankee constitution
that its air-conditioned. Which reminds me, did you know
that Georgia has a vanity license plate for the Conditioned
Air Association of Georgia? Well, they do. When I renew my
tags, Im going to get a Historic Preservation plate. After all,
Im old, and thanks to a nip here and a tuck there, Im well
preserved, too.
Theres something about warm weather that makes me
seek sultry destinations full of hot-blooded men. That used
to mean the Club Med in Cancun, but today its more like my
neighbors pool in Ansley. You should check out the biceps
on some of his friends! Of course, its not all about fun in the
sun. Some of our citys more cultured cosmopolites will cross
the pond this month as part of the Institute of Classical Architectures tour of the English country houses of Sir Edwin
Lutyens. And speaking of England, last months wedding of
William and Kate brought tears to my eyes. I didnt know
whether to laugh or cry over those cockamamie hats worn by
some of the guests. And, finally, can we just say that Tony
seems to be everywhere this month? Theres A Tony Evening
on May 7, a gala to benefit the Alliance Theatre. Guess whos
the chair of the Dcor Committee? Thats right, A Legendary
Events Tony Conway. And the following week is the annual
Beastly Feast at Zoo Atlanta with another TonyTony
Brewerdesigning the event. With all of that Tony talent, I
cant think of two, um, tonier events!

MARMI... NATURES ART

Playing off of natures incredible aesthetic, the technique of book matching is a

growing trend among designers for both classic and contemporary residential design.
The technique of book matching with natural stone is a reection of stone veining
patterns across a joint so that adjacent panels appear as mirror images. As displayed
here in Calacatta Viola Marble (left) and Honey Onyx (right), this technique works well
as focal points such as backsplashes, wall art, grand entrances and staircases.

DESIGNER
JIMMY
STANTON
RENDERS A
WESTSIDE
PIED--TERRE
WONDROUS,
WHILE
MAINTAINING
A HUMBLE
ESCAPE IN
THE GEORGIA
COUNTRYSIDE

Jimmy Stantons country and city

dwellings are more alike than one
might expect for homes with such
disparate purposes. Namely, both
are outtted entirely in neutrals
mostly rich, warm grays and
khakisshades that Stanton describes as comfortable colors. I
like all neutrals with pops of
color, he explains. Its modern,
but it still has that really relaxed
feel. Still, each home has its
unique grace notes. Where his
Madison, Georgia, house leans
soft and traditional, his condo at
Westside Provisions is much more
graphic and modern, with wellplaced punches of bright color.
For the living room mantel in
Madison, opposite, Stanton selected a circa-1880 oil portrait
coincidentally, from the same era
as the homes rst addition. In Atlanta, a Helen Durant painting
over the roomy leather club sofa,
part of the artists new wolf series,
adds whimsy to the living space.

63

The Madison house caught re in

the late 60s and the back of it
burned, causing the wood to petrify and, counter-intuitively, rendering it an even stronger
structure than before. Stantons
renovations to the exterior included the addition of a tin roof,
as well as an old-style white picket
fence surrounding the property. In
true small town form, every exterior change made to a home in
Madisonno matter how inconspicuousmust go through the
approval of the local historical society.

In the Atlanta home, colorful pillows and art add pop, while an accessible terrace leads the way to
amazing city views, especially at
night. In Madison, a fully stocked
bar, inspired by that of an old ship
and built from reclaimed wood, is
prime for entertainingor just wiling away a lazy spring evening.
Apothecary bottles line the mantels and ample references to nature, such as a vintage bird study
chart, abound. opposite In Madison, a spacious hallway connects
the homes main rooms.

left Stanton warmed up a

bare entry wall in his Westside condominium by installing a free-standing
replace, sourced from Direct Furniture in Atlanta.
The equine photography is
by artist Ray Hartl, represented at Stantons shop.
right The designer keeps
hundreds of magazines
stowed in an old trunk in
Madison, but back in Atlanta, most of his books
have found a permanent
home thanks to roomy
shelving in the living room.
We looked at a larger
unit, considering all my
booksbecause I have to
have thembut they
ended up tting perfectly
here, he says.

In a city where commutes can stretch into hours and

schedules are appointed to the minute, its easy to get lost in the flurry
of daily life. But among the here, there and everywhere, for many, remains a constant craving: the clean, quiet, soul-replenishing respite of
a small towns charms.
Jimmy Stanton is one such man constantly on the move, managing
his shop, design clients and frequent showhouses with remarkable finesse. Those familiar with the designers enormously successful Westside boutique, Stanton Home Furnishings, recognize his knack for
re-imagining cast-off objects while curating an inventory that comprises the best of the old and new.
So it may come as no surprise that the country house he and Patrick
Greco share in Madison, Georgia, was just as much a labor of love. They
bought the home three years ago and have put in as much time fixing
it uprewiring the electrical system, overhauling the kitchen and exploring its many forgotten nooks and cranniesas they have fashioning a classic and comfortable scheme that honors the homes splendid

66

ATLANTAHOM ES MAG.COM

sense of history.
We kept finding things like the window above the front door, which
was completely painted over, Stanton recalls. We just started scraping and, once we punched through, everything instantly looked so much
bigger and brighter.
Built in 1818, the home is the oldest brick structure in town, and
comes with a long and checkered history of owners, additions and
mishaps, including a fire in the late 1960s. But it has withstood the test
of time, and its many unique architectural featuressuch as staggered
ceiling heights and intricate mantelsare proof positive. And the living room, with its soaring 11-foot ceiling, deep khaki walls and bountiful textures, is inherently calming. Theres just something about this
room, Stanton says. You get here and you sit down, and you instantly
relax. Its wonderful.
Located just an hours drive from the big city, Madison is not too far
off the beaten path, but remote enough to make it a wonderful discovery. My parents live on Lake Oconee at Reynolds Plantation, explains

DESIGNER JIMMY STANTON IS SMITTEN WITH THE WALKABLE WAY

OF LIFE ON ATLANTAS WESTIDE, BUT HE ALWAYS MAKES TIME TO
SLIP AWAY TO THE SERENITY OF MADISON, GEORGIA

Stanton, and on the way to visit them one weekend, we drove through
Madison. We immediately thought, this is incredible. With Athens
and Reynolds Plantationand, in turn, The National and The RitzCarltona convenient 30 minutes away, it was easy to fall head over
heels. And because neither Stanton nor Greco work on Mondays,
Madison is their favorite place to spend long weekendstheir Chihuahua pup, Terry, ever in tow.
In fact, Stanton describes it as a place where time stands still. Our
cell phones dont work well, and since were right on the square, we can
walk to all the restaurants, shop at the interiors market and pass by the
old graveyard. There are so many wonderful old things to see; we sort
of just get up and have our coffee and go.
The slow pace of things is a nice contrast to their life back in Atlanta, one that couldnt be more urbane. The two live, work and play in
the burgeoning Westside, walking to many of their favorite restaurantsamong them Abattoir, JCT Kitchen and West Egg Cafand
arriving at work in as few as five minutes. And though their Madison

home is the perfect embodiment of the Stanton aestheticcozy, intimate and replete with meaningful objectsthe couples two-bedroom
condominium at Westside Provisions, which they moved into just six
months ago, demonstrates how the same items can skew sleek and
modern.
Here, Stantons telltale pieces and palette gain an edge thanks to
cool touches like a mod freestanding fireplace in the entryway, a rich
black guest bathroom, and a vibrantly colored Hudsons Bay blanket
tempering the dark gray walls of the master bedroom. A smart floor
plan and sleek kitchen are just a few of the perks their city space offers,
but without all the surplus of their former Atlanta home. Even the master bath, outfitted with subway tiled marble and espresso-toned cabinets, was a breath of fresh air.
We had just finished doing the bathrooms in Madison, and it can
be a nightmare working on old houses, says Stanton. When we walked
in and saw how nice it was, we said, This is perfect, were ready to move
in. And so it happened; in just one week, they did. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

While the objects Stanton selected for his Madison home reect the weathered, untamed
surroundings, those in his Atlanta
condominium read as clean and
crisp. Yet nearly all of them were
sourced through Stanton Home
Furnishings, revealing the versatility of this talented designers eye
for style. In Atlanta, he painted
everything in the kitchencabinets, walls, ceiling includedone
soft, serene shade of gray.

opposite The only thing left intact

to the original kitchen were the already-gorgeous wood oors. For
the rest of the design transformation, Stanton called upon the expertise of Atlanta designer Jamie
McPherson, of Hearth & Home Interiors, who helped select elements such as a strong iron
window, Viking appliances and
the wood paneling spanning the
walls. Stanton added rustic submarine lights as unexpected ceiling xtures, their crackly patina
playing up the rooms other rich

The dining room is one of

the most traditional spaces
in the Madison home. Its
mix of rustic textures and
classic lines pays tribute to
the sense of history evident throughout, and preserved so avidly in this
storied Southern town.

74

Although Stanton had a treasure

trove of inventory available to furnish both homes, he took the opportunity to incorporate a few
unique heirlooms into the scheme,
as well. In Madison, some of the
special pieces inherited from his
grandmother include an oval mirror over the bed in the master
bedroom, Sheraton-style chairs
with original crewelwork fabric
and a drop-leaf table in the dining
room. Throughout the house, he
has created stylish vignettes and
groupings of collections.

opposite The colors of the blanket

on the master bed in the city may
look straight out of the groovy
70s, but they harken back to a
couple centuries before that. In
the 1770s, Stanton explains, shermen would trade these traditional wool blankets to Native
Americans in exchange for furs
and other goods. Here, its vivid
stripes help temper the deep gray
walls and the rustic touches found
throughout the space. Rugged

bedroom in Madison is classically
simple, just as youd expect for a
space that Stanton describes as a
forever home. The old tub was
original to the Madison house
when the couple purchased it, but
thats all that remains intact in the
master bath. Several pieces culled
from Stanton Home Furnishings,
from pressed botanicals to a
handwoven rug, help to warm up
the space, taking it from basic to
brilliant. In Atlanta, the guest bathroom packs maximum impact
thanks to inky black walls, submarine-light sconces and artwork by
Todd Murphy, available through

master bathroom is at once sleek
and cozy, an inviting hide bench

that frame the windows

areas to do different activities and for different

while the other can accommodate six for a casual meal.

When a young couple first approached Paige Sumblin

Schnell about the design of their dream lake house, they had a few
requests. Their Alabama home, situated on a stunning point in The
Ridge on Lake Martin, had to be versatile enough for their family of
six. It also had to be comfortable and, most importantly, all white.
The client likes lots of white, and you can see that in the space,
says Sumblin Schnell, a principal designer with Tracery Interiors. It
is a marriage of more rustic wood and stone with crisp white, with a
little bit of French influence, but not too much.
Juxtaposing natural materials like reclaimed wood beams and
floorsharvested from barns in Vermont and Georgiawith planked

walls swathed in Benjamin Moores China White, Sumblin Schnell

and assistant Anna Kay Porch created a soothing color palette that
didnt deter from the main attraction: the view.
When a home is on a lake like this, you want every room to face
the lake. You want to make sure that you capture the views, says
Sumblin Schnell, describing how she planned the space to embrace
the surrounding scenery.
But the most challenging aspect of the homes design was keeping
it from becoming too formal for a family with four children. Modern
touches of linen and galvanized metal soften stately French antiques,
while dividing the living room into intimate seating areas makes it

feel at once cozy and grand. Moored by striking architectural details

like the substantial fireplace and natural stone pillars, the space also
has playful touches, like graceful chandeliers in unexpected places,
keeping it light and unconventional.
The casual vibe continues into the kitchen, where small appliances and plenty of extra storage are tucked away in a back pantry.
It relieves the kitchen of some of the stress of being utilitarian,
allowing you to do more beautiful architectural elements in the
kitchen, says the designer. It really opens up your possibilities.
Offset by the natural wood and white color palette, these possibilities include modern details, like two marble-topped islands
anchoring the room, a large farmhouse sink and open shelving

the perfect place to display vintage stoneware.

As outdoor living space is essential to any lake house, large
French doors lead from the living room onto a Beaumaniere
limestone porch, continuing the neutral palette. And to further encourage the indoor-outdoor lifestyle, a dock features a stone fireplace, grill and dining area, providing a place to unwind by the
water.
Because the space is large enough for entertaining and family
gatherings, the home sees no shortage of use. And as visitors to this
resplendent getaway can attest, relaxation is unavoidable. It really
resonates with people, says Sumblin Schnell. They instantly like
it. The space just feels great. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

CLINTON SMITH: YOU FORMERLY HAD A VACATION HOUSE AT ROSEMARY BEACH, WHICH YOU HAVE SINCE SOLD. HOWD YOU END UP AT
LAKE RABUN? Kay Douglass: Funny enough, my husband, Jim, went
to the lake for the first time last year while I was on a buying trip
to France. He went up on an invite from a friend and came back
saying that he had found the perfect lake, and it was only one-anda-half hours away from Atlanta. We didnt discuss it again until one
hot, sultry June day, when we called Lakemont real estate agent
Michael McGaughey on a whim and asked if we could come up
in two hours! He laughed, said yes, and just a few weeks later we
knew that we had found the perfect house!

striking colors. Its kind of like when you walk into a great hotel
a happy surprise! At home, my house is much more toned down, all
very white with only pops of yellow.
HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN SLEEP OVER? We can have up to 12 people
sleeping comfortably, but when we went house hunting we had no
intention of having as many bedrooms. Since the house was a former lodge, there are just so many little rooms. Now, each bedroom
has its own bright color palettecitron, cobalt, orange and verde.

YOUR INTERIORS ALWAYS MAKE POWERFUL STATEMENTS WHILE USING
VERY FEW OBJECTS, YET THEY NEVER FEEL EMPTY OR COLD. HOW DO
YOU DO THAT? This is my favorite part of design and how my shop

originally began. I love finding unusual things and giving them new
life. It only takes a few really special items to give a house that feeling. When it comes to clients, this part is always interesting. Convincing the client that the crazy object were proposing is a
must-have to complete their room is sometimes a challenge, but it
almost always becomes their favorite and most talked about thing
in the house!

LIFE

INTERVIEW BY

MARCIA SHERRILL

Miles Redd
Marcia Sherrill chats with the New York design superstar
whos originally from the ATL
MILES, YOU ARE AN ATLANTA NATIVE. WHAT LED

I came to New York for

college. I started at Parsons, but ultimately
graduated from NYU with a degree in film.

YOU TO THE BIG CITY?

YOU LOOK ABOUT 16. ISNT THERE A LAW AGAINST

CHILD LABOR? HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU

Thanks for the compliment. After graduating from college, I went

to work for John Rosselli and then for
Bunny Williams. I was 21 at the time, so I
started right out of the gate. IN THIS ISSUE, WE

STARTED DESIGNING?

ARE RANTING AND RAVING ABOUT SECOND

RAISED IN ATLANTA, MILES REDD,

BELOW, IS WELL-KNOWN FOR HIS
ABILITY TO INCORPORATE BOLD
COLORS INTO TRADITIONAL
INTERIORS, AS EVIDENCED BY THE
LIVING ROOM AND HALLWAY
EXAMPLES SHOWN HERE. IN
ADDITION TO HIS INTERIOR DESIGN
WORK, REDD WAS NAMED THE
CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF OSCAR DE
LA RENTA HOME IN 2003. HIS
WORK HAS BEEN FEATURED IN
TOWN & COUNTRY, VOGUE, HOUSE
BEAUTIFUL, ELLE DECOR, HOUSE &
GARDEN, W AND COUNTRY LIFE.

HOMESANY ADVICE? I think a second home

can be great. Since it is not a primary residence, people will often be a bit more creative. I say treat it like a hotel and enjoy yourself. YOUR PARENTS
STILL LIVE IN ATLANTA. WHAT INSPIRED YOUR DESIGN FOR YOUR FAMILYS

We jokingly call it Country

Deco. I was very much inspired by Henri Samuels Paris apartment, which is sort of hysterical for a mountain house, but I
dumbed it down and I think it works. YOUR DESIGNS ARE SO YOU.
VACATION HOUSE IN NORTH CAROLINA?

YOU ARE ONE OF THE FEW WORKING DESIGNERS TO HAVE A LOOK, YET IT
NEVER OVERWHELMS YOUR CLIENTS VISIONS. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE
LESSLYTO KEEP YOUR DESIGNS IN LOCK-STEP WITH YOUR CLIENTS? I really have had the luck of having great clients with strong opinions.
This gives each job a unique feeling, and thats what you are sensing. YOU ARE SO GLAMOROUS AND YOUR STYLE IS SO POLISHED. IS THERE
ANYTHING FROM YOUR SOUTHERN CHILDHOOD THAT INFLUENCES YOU?

Absolutely! I always say the South has the taste. The thing that
I take away most is that we enjoy lifeand isnt that the point of
everything? YOUVE LONG BEEN THE DARLING OF THE DESIGN PRESS.
WHATS NEXT FOR ATLANTAS VERY OWN WUNDERKIND? I hope just more
good decoration and good times!
