Abstract:

Due to increasing complexity of electrical power systems, there has been growing interest in
the stabilization of such systems. Enhancing power system dynamic stability through high
speed power electronic devices (FACTS technology) has received much attention in recent
years. Thyristor controlled phase shifter (TCPS) and Static Synchronous Compensator
(STATCOM) are the two most promising FACTS devices. In this thesis, an intelligent
control of these devices has been investigated for power system damping enhancement.
Detailed non-linear model of a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system as well as multi
machine systems installed with TCPS and STATCOM is developed. Next, PI and PID
controllers are designed for both TCPS and STATCOM by considering generator speed as
feedback. Optimizations of the controller parameters for the SMIB system are performed
through Differential Evolution (DE) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) techniques. The
proposed PI and PID control of TCPS and STATCOM has been tested through a number of
simulation studies. Input torque steps representing sudden changes in inputs show that the
stability of the system may be affected. However, the FACTS units can provide the necessary
real and reactive power compensation to redistribute the power. A multimachine power
system consisting of 4 machine 12 bus has been developed for non-linear simulations.
Intelligent variation of multimachine controller parameter under various contingencies
validates the system performance.

Conclusion:
The transient behavior of a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) power system installed with a
Thyristor controlled phase shifter (TCPS) and a STATCOM has been investigated in this
work. Nonlinear representations of the SMIB power system are modeled through first order
differential equations. Both PI and PID controllers have been considered for TCPS and also
for the STATCOM. Tuning of the controller parameters has been accomplished through
Differential Evolution (DE) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) methods. A comparison
between these two techniques is also established. Comparative study for the differential
combinations of controllers has been presented.
Next, a multi machine power system comprising of 4-machines and 12-bus is considered.
Controllers are designed for both the TCPS and STATCOM. The effectiveness of TCPS and
STATCOM in coordination has been tested through simulation studies for various disturbed
operational scenarios.
It can be established that TCPS along with a STATCOM showed considerable good damping
characteristics and is successful in damping out low frequency oscillations arising due to
different contingencies.
