you to get a passport, they will say where is your UID number, when you go to
get a driving licence, they will say where is your UID number, when you go to
pay tax, they will say where is your UID number, you go to open a bank account,

It is outrageous that decent, law-abiding people are regularly treated as if they

service providers to take fingerprint or any other biometric feature of the
subscriber when he/she applies for a new mobile connection.

DNA profiling: Very soon, govt will know you inside out
The bill proposes the creation of a national DNA data bank that will be
manned by a manager of the rank of a joint secretary to the government of
India. For activists, this will help the government assume the role of an
alarming Big Brother collecting vast amount of sensitive data of citizens. The
preamble to the bill admits that DNA analysis offers sensitive information
which, if misused, can cause harm to a person or society.

Government buying deep surveillance, monitoring equipment

Amid a raging global debate on privacy versus surveillance, monitoring and
use of intrusive technologies by governments, the Directorate of Forensic
Sciences in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is set to purchase a range of
equipment and software that will allow it to conduct deep search, surveillance
and monitoring of voice calls, SMS, email, video, Internet, chat, browsing and
Skype sessions on an unprecedented scale.
The MHA is one of the nine authorised departments, along with IB and RAW,

Israeli company to win Indian mass electronic surveillance contract

The Israeli surveillance firm Verint Systems is set to get a contract from the
Indian Department of Telecommunications to facilitate government
interception of encrypted electronic communications.
This is just the latest of several contracts Verint has won for mass
surveillance and wiretapping of citizenry around the world and the latest

Indias New Surveillance Program Will Function Under A Law From The
Colonial Era
While India has no formal privacy law, the program will function under the
Indian Telegraph Act a law giving the government broad authority to
monitor private conversations that was created by British colonial authorities
in 1885.
Theres nearly a century between 1885 and 1979, but just as it seems
ridiculous to use a law from a repressive colonial regime to justify a broad
surveillance program.
