A
LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
A new year has arrived along with all the expectations of what it will bring.
Newborn 2015 offers each of us a fresh start, a blank canvas. What 2015 will hold
for you is limited only by your imagination and will to succeed!
Perhaps this is the year you finally take that trip youve always wanted. Youll
travel near, far and everywhere in between; you will see all this wide world has to
offer. In 2015 you will immerse yourself in other cultures, make new friends and
learn more about yourself than in all your previous years combined.
Or perhaps you will experience something a bit closer to home. Maybe youll
break a bad habit or overcome a challenge thats been plaguing you for some
time. Is this the year youll turn your finances around, start investing for the
future and pave your way to becoming debt-free?
Maybe 2015 will open the door to learn a new skill. Is a different language, a
musical instrument or an artistic medium like sculpture or painting waiting for
you? Adding a new means of self-expression to your life can be extremely fulfilling. Perhaps youll make it a priority to journal every week or even every day this
year. Just think of all youll discover about yourself and the world around you
when you take time to reflect.
Will this be a year of healing? If youre hurting, know that you deserve to feel
happy. Make this the year you truly and fully forgive yourself for your past transgressions both those against others and yourself. Take those necessary first
steps to move past the pain and rediscover joy.
Perhaps youll feed your soul this year. Whether you find your connection to
something greater in a defined faith or outside of one, rejoice in it! Take time to
nurture your spiritual side.
Is this the year you start and stick to your goal of building the healthiest
life you can?
Whatever you choose to focus on in 2015, Natures Pathways will be behind
you, offering guidance and resources along your journey to wellness in every
sense of the word. This months magazine offers countless tips on how to live

Is your New
Years resolution
to lose weight?
Be sure your thyroid is
functioning properly!
...............................................................................
By Randi Mann, NP

hats your New Years resolution? To lose 10 or 20 pounds

or more? If you have an underactive thyroid gland, this may be almost
impossible. You may begin eating healthier and exercising on Jan. 1 and give up in
frustration by Jan. 30 after failing to lose
the weight you wanted, or in fact gaining
weight, despite all your valiant efforts.
As a womens health nurse practitioner caring for thousands of women every
year, I always encourage my patients to eat
a healthy, balanced diet and exercise 30
minutes or more, five to six times per week.
Unfortunately, for my patients who are
suffering from thyroid or other hormonal
imbalances, this usually is not enough to
promote weight loss and good health.
Do you suffer from any of the following?
Tiredness and sluggishness
Dryer hair or skin
Gain weight easily
Weaker muscles
A constant feeling of cold (fingers/feet)
Frequent muscle cramps
Poorer memory
Depression/mood changes
Slower thinking
10

Natures Pathways | January 2015

Puffier eyes, face, hands or feet

Difficulty with math
Hoarser or deeper voice
Constipation
Coarse hair/hair loss/brittle hair
Muscle/joint pain
Low sex drive/impotence
Unsteady gait (you bump into things)
Thinning of the outer third of eyebrow
Irregular periods
Heavier periods (more clotting or
periods that last more than three days)
Carpel tunnel syndrome
Sleeping more than usual
If you have many of the above symptoms,
consider seeking treatment from a functional medicine provider who is trained
to identify multiple causes and treat many
hormone imbalances, including hypothyroidism. A functional medicine approach
is very comprehensive and may include the
following tests:
Free T3
Free T4
TSH
Reverse T3
Estrogen

Progesterone
Testosterone
DHEA
2 or 4 point cortisol
B12 and folate
TPO antibodies
TG antibodies
Ferritin
Vitamin D 25 OH
Hypothyroid symptoms may seem
nonspecific. They may overlap with symptoms related to other conditions, such as
food allergies, adrenal dysfunction, iron
deficiency and hormonal imbalances.
Careful evaluation of your symptoms, lab
results, physical exam, deep tendon reflex
speed, diet, medical and family history and
toxin exposure should be used to create a
personalized treatment plan for you. This
is important because each person may have
different contributing factors that need to
be addressed, such as:
POOR DIET one that is low in
iodine, L-tyrosine, zinc and selenium
vital components that the body needs
to manufacture thyroid hormones.
I recommend a pharmacy-grade,
www.naturespathways.com

well-formulated multivitamin and

mineral supplement along with eating
a well-balanced, nutrient-dense diet to
every patient in my practice.
HASHIMOTOS THYROIDITIS, a
condition where the immune system
starts to attack the thyroid gland. This
patient may have elevated thyroid
antibodies and may experience swings
between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism (i.e., heart palpitations, fast
heart rate, insomnia, hand tremors,
sweating, nervousness, etc.) symptoms
until their thyroid eventually is not able
to function. This persons treatment
would include thyroid medication and
education about ways to decrease the
inflammation in their body.
FOOD AND CHEMICAL SENSITIVITY testing may be helpful to
identify substances that may be
causing low-grade, chronic inflammation. Reaction to gluten (the protein
in wheat, rye and barley) may cause
systemic inflammation for many and
choosing to eat gluten-free for life may
be necessary.

DISRUPTED GASTROINTESTINAL
(GI) FLORA can also contribute to
malabsorption, poor detoxification of
toxins and poor conversion of T4 to
the biologically active hormone T3.
STRESS can cause high cortisol
and estrogen levels, which prevents
ovulation and is common in times of
hormone transition such as perimenopause. Female hormone testing and
prescription progesterone therapy may
be helpful. Certain supplements, foods
and more fiber may be prescribed to
help increase the clearing of excess
hormones from the body.
LOW VITAMIN D levels affect the
cellular thyroid receptor response.
LOW FERRITIN decreases the transport of thyroxine into the cell nucleus.
Did your doctor say your thyroid is working
just fine because he/she only tested your
thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level
and the result was in the normal range? Or
are you taking a T4-only thyroid medication
(i.e., Synthroid) but your symptoms persist? I
prefer my patients lab values, including many

thyroid levels, vitamin D and ferritin, to be

in the optimal end of the lab normal ranges.
I have also found many patients respond
better to a combination of a prescription T4
and T3 hormone medication.
As you can see, a TSH test alone may not
properly diagnose hypothyroidism and it
may take more than Synthroid medication
to help you feel your best.
At our wellness center we offer a
specialized, computerized assessment of the speed of your deep tendon
reflex in your arm along with thorough physical and symptom assessments and personalized treatment plan. This information is invaluable to determine if you need to
start prescription thyroid medication or have your
current level of medication adjusted. We understand
that thyroid-driven weight gain is stubborn but we
can help you stop it!
Randi Mann, WHCNP-BC, NCMP, is the owner
of Wise Woman Wellness LLC, an innovative wellness center in De Pere. She is a functional medicine provider offering natural treatments and
prescription medications for thyroid and hormone
imbalances including custom-dosed, bioidentical
hormones. Please attend the seminar End Hormone

Waxed

Rediscovering the
natural beauty of
wood with sustainable, nontoxic,
zero-VOC natural waxed finishes
.................................................................................

Photos by Julie Zahn.

By Jonas A. Zahn

This is one of a four-part series on natural,

nontoxic, eco-friendly wood finishes. Look
for the next installment in next months
issue, at www.naturespathways.com or
http://northwoodscasket.com/blog.

n the process of building

a sustainable and ecofriendly casket company,
weve had to learn a lot about eco-friendly
wood finishes. Weve learned how to
achieve a wide variety of beautiful wood
finishes without using harmful chemicals.
Most of our learning has been a matter
of rediscovering the historic techniques
mastered by 16th century English craftsmen. In this article well briefly cover the
history, chemistry and useful techniques
for achieving natural waxed finishes.
Waxes have been used for centuries to
seal and protect wood surfaces. Waxes are
effective sealers and provide durable and

protective coating. Conventional manufacturing has shifted to varnishes and polyurethane finishes that can be applied with
spray techniques, whereas wax finishes
require some elbow grease and patience
to get comfortable with the technique. In
general, waxes must first be applied in a
circular motion with an applicator pad,
cloth, brush or sponge. Within a minute or
two, wipe the wax in the same direction as
the wood grain. And finally, buff the wax
to a shine once the wax has begun to cure
or dry.

Buffing a wax finish takes some getting

used to. You can buff waxed wood surfaces
with a soft lint-free cotton cloth, a polyester
auto-buffing cloth or even an old polyester
T-shirt or slacks. I prefer polyester because
it is mildly abrasive and not absorbent. The
trick is in the timing and pressure. Buff too
soon and you will smear the wax around.
Wait too long and the wax will be too hard
to buff to a nice shine. Buff lightly with the
same pressure youd pet your cat or dog.
Let the rag do the work. The more expert
you get at applying the wax, the longer you
will be comfortable waiting to buff some
experts wait hours to buff after application.
Multiple coats can be applied to build up a
thick protective finish.
My favorite wax is clear carnauba wax.
Carnauba wax is made by pressing the
leaves of a palm tree. This wax is what is
used to make M&Ms chocolate candy
shells, lipstick and automotive polish. It is
available in bars, flakes and paste. The bars
and flakes are either pure or blended with
beeswax. The paste form maintains the
wax in suspension in a solvent typically
turpentine. In paste form, carnauba wax is

classified as either a low-volatile organic

compound (VOC) or VOC product. Once
applied and the solvent has evaporated, the
finished wood is 100 percent free of VOCs
(important for making childrens toys or
furniture). You can make your own wax
paste with carnauba wax flakes and orange
oil solvent or lemon juice.
There is a newly patented wax product
produced exclusively by the Real Milk
Paint Company. This wax is a proprietary
blend of walnut oil, carnauba wax and
beeswax. They offer two colors: Warm
Black and Chestnut Brown. These ingredients polymerize with exposure to the air
to form a tight-sealing, almost plastic-like
surface. Water will bead up on this surface
and it is 100 percent VOC free perfect
for table surfaces. Apply with a cotton
cloth in ultra-thin coats and let dry 24
hours. Then buff lightly with steel wool for
a very smooth, shiny surface. Apply multiple coats to your liking.
All of these topcoat finishes can be
layered for added protection, but not in
any order. Finishes that require a porous
surface must be applied first before others

that seal the surface. For example, we often

use milk paint, then tung oil, then wax. Wax
can be layered on wax, but once the surface
is waxed you cannot not apply more paint
or oil, as the surface is sealed and there no
longer is a porous texture for milk paint or
natural oil to penetrate and bond to.

aring for pets is sometimes compared to raising children. Though the two are not exactly the same, there are
similarities between raising a child and caring for a pet.
Like curious kids, fearless pets may not understand the potential
hazards around them, and some of these dangers differ depending
on the season.

Winter

Cold weather and snow may make both pets and people less likely
to venture outdoors. Dogs that use the yard to relieve themselves
often cannot avoid the ice and snow. These conditions can put
pets at risk.
As with humans, animals are susceptible to hypothermia and
frostbite. When the weather is cold, pets should not remain
outdoors without shelter for extended periods of time. The
Humane Society of the United States advises that exposed skin on
noses, ears and paw pads can quickly freeze and suffer permanent
damage. Dogs and cats are safer and warmer indoors.
Salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate
pet paws. When the animal then licks irritated paws, the chemicals can be transferred to the tongue and mouth. Rinse paws after
dogs come in from walks, or use protective booties to keep feet
covered. Limit the amount of products you use to melt snow,
opting for sand or cat litter for traction.
Provide more water during the winter when the effort it takes
for pets to keep their bodies warm can quickly deplete their
energy stores. Compensate by giving pets a little more food and
water in the winter.
Pets may be attracted to automotive antifreeze due to its sweet
smell and taste. But antifreeze can be toxic. Coolants and antifreeze made with propylene glycol are less toxic to pets, wildlife
and even human beings.

Spring

Spring is a season of rebirth and renewal when pleasant weather

has both people and pets eager to get outdoors again. However,
certain springtime dangers may be lurking, and it takes an
informed pet owner to keep animals safe.
Spring cleaning is a ritual for many families, and cleaning chemicals and products can be dangerous to inquisitive pets. Use these items
properly, and keep dogs and cats away. Birds are especially sensitive to
chemical fumes, so move birds out of harms way when cleaning.
Products used in the yard, such as pesticides, fertilizers, tools,
and soil additives, may be harmful if ingested. Sharp tools can
injure dogs or cats running around the yard. Keep pets out of
garden beds when doing lawn and garden work.
As homeowners throw open windows and doors to let fresh air
inside, they may not realize broken or torn screens can let indoor
animals escape. Examine entry and exit points, making sure they
are not easily penetrated, before leaving pets unattended. A lost
pet can be struck by a vehicle or be exposed to yard hazards.

Summer

Hot weather can be very hazardous, as heat stroke and dehydration are potential summertime problems for pets. Old and young
pets are less capable of regulating their body temperatures, making
them especially susceptible to hot spells. Keep pets indoors during
the hottest hours of the day and provide plenty of water.
Chemicals used to maintain a swimming pool are dangerous
to pets and people. They should be stored out of reach to prevent
accidental contact or ingestion.
Some dogs and cats may be good swimmers, but that does not
mean they should be left alone in swimming pools. As you would a
child, keep a watchful eye on pets when theyre in or around pools.
Warmer weather brings out the bugs, and so keep pets
www.naturespathways.com

up-to-date with their immunizations. Mosquitoes can spread

diseases that can lead to heartworm and other conditions. Talk to
a veterinarian about preventative measures to keep pets healthy.

Autumn

Autumn is a great time of year to spend some time outdoors with

your pet. But you must be aware of your surroundings and practice safety. Many animals spend the fall storing food or making
accommodations for winter hibernation. Snakes may be out
looking for burrows and can be in foul moods. A curious pooch
can walk away with a bite if he or she comes up against a grumpy
snake looking for a den.
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center notes mushrooms
may be growing in the fall. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to
distinguish highly toxic mushrooms from nontoxic ones, so the
best way to keep pets from ingesting poisonous mushrooms is to
keep them away from areas where mushrooms are growing.
Some people may resort to rodenticides to keep mice and other
small animals out of homes when theyre seeking warmer places to
nest. These products are highly toxic to pets and can result in death.
Sometimes eating a mouse that has consumed a rodenticide is enough
to harm a pet. Pet owners that use these products must exercise
extreme caution or find other methods to curtail rodent infestations.
No matter the season, pet owners must prioritize keeping their
pets safe from seasonal hazards.

Are you
allergic to the
outside
world?
......................................................................
By Zachary Paul, D.C.

tuffy nose, congestion and sneezing are

just a few of the symptoms a persons
body experiences when it does not
react well to the change in seasons. According to the National Institutes of Health, the
most common allergies are drugs, dust, food,
insect venom, mold, pet and other animal
dander and pollen. Unfortunately, allergies are a product of an overactive immune
system stimulated by something.

Setting the record straight

Extreme allergic responses, such as anaphylactic shock, shown by people who are
allergic to peanuts can be a life-threatening
situation. However, many people confuse
a food allergy with a food intolerance or
sensitivity. Less than 5 percent of the United
States population has a true food allergy.
A true food allergy needs to be considered something separate than an intolerance, which is less severe and does not
create an immediate allergic response.
A person has control over the immune
system by managing the amount of inflammatory products that they consume. The
most common food sensitivities causing
inflammation are wheat, milk, corn, soy,
yeast, chocolate, and eggs, according to
the book Your Hidden Food Allergies Are
Making You Fat.

How can inflammation

be controlled?

It starts with what people put into their

body. You eat cream puffs and you will be
16

Natures Pathways | January 2015

a cream puff. Refined carbohydrates, deficient in nutrients such as vitamins and

minerals, stimulate inflammation inside the
body. Being that inflammation is cumulative, knowing the body and what foods it
is intolerant to is key to reducing a persons
allergic response. Weight gain, headaches,
fatigue and joint pain can all be symptoms
of an intolerance to specific foods.

Current treatment
for allergies

Corticosteroids and antihistamines are

two of the many drugs available for allergy
relief. Short-term side effects of corticosteroids, used to decrease chronic inflammation, include hypertension, hyperglycemia,
pancreatitis, and hematologic, immunologic and neuropsychologic effects. Side
effects associated with long-term corticosteroid use include osteoporosis, joint
infection, adrenal fatigue, possible congenital malformations, and gastrointestinal,
liver and growth suppression. Antihistamines also demonstrate side effects associated with short- and long-term use.

Homework

Write down everything you eat for one day.

Not just the main courses; add in all the
different items contained in the food you
eat. You will be amazed by what you find
and how many ingredients are actually in
the food you consume.
Also, look at what is hidden in your
foods and see if they are known to cause

inflammation. How do you feel after

you consume foods that may promote
inflammation?
It is time to focus on what you consume
and the impact that foods play on your
health. Every person is different and each
person has his or her own food intolerances. If you have trouble determining your
food intolerances and are suffering from
headaches, weight gain or fatigue, speaking
with a health professional who works with
food allergies may be a good investment in
your health.

How to beat
the winter
blues
......................................................................
By Meridith Starling, CISW, MSSW

s our days are shorter and the weather colder, it is not

uncommon to feel more lethargic, moody and irritable.
If you notice that every year you begin feeling down,
moody, irritable, and fatigued during the cooler months (fall
through winter), you may have seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
SAD is a type of depression that some may face due to the changes
in the season and their own body chemistry.
Below are some examples of ways to support your physical and
mental health during the winter season:
INCREASE YOUR VITAMIN D CONSUMPTION. Talk with

your health care provider to make sure this is safe for you.

EXERCISE AT LEAST 20-30 MINUTES A DAY. Exercise

increases endorphins that send a mental booyah! to the brain. If

you can get outside, bundle up and go for a walk outdoors.
IF AN OPTION FOR YOU, PURCHASE A HAPPYLIGHT
LAMP. These can be found at Amazon.com and run around $30.

These lamps put off light that mimics the suns natural glow. Being
in a room with one of these for as little as 30 minutes a day can
increase your mood. If you are not able to purchase one of these,
try to sit near the window at home and office so that the sunshine
streams in and around you.
VACATION. The snowbirds have the right idea! Why wait until

retirement to fly south for the winter? Plan a weekend trip somewhere warm. Often you can find great deals at resorts because it
is their off season. Plan a trip in advance to save on fees and get
some warmth. A travel agent can help you troubleshoot and find
the perfect place within your budget.
KEEP YOUR SLEEP SCHEDULE. It can be difficult when it is

already dark by 5 p.m. to stay up until 9 or 10 p.m. However, if

18

Natures Pathways | January 2015

you fall asleep prior to your normal bedtime you run the risk of
waking up in the middle of the night or early in the morning, such
as at 3 a.m. This does not help with mood at all. Just one night of
poor sleep can cause a change in mood, not to mention fatigue.
GET PROPER NUTRITION. Make sure you are eating foods

rich in vitamins D, C and A: spinach, kale, mushrooms, oranges,

carrots, and sweet potatoes to name a few. Increase your omega3s, 6s and 9s to help support brain function as well. Grass-fed
meats and wild-caught seafood are great sources for this. If all else
fails, you can take supplements; however, it is better to get it from
the source (i.e., food).
If you feel like you may be suffering from SAD, please contact
your health care provider for a more in-depth screening. Medications, counseling and some simple lifestyle changes are very effective in treating the winter blues.
Lets leave the blues to the jazz singers and perk up our spirits.
After all, we cannot control the weather we can only control
how we react and respond to it.
Happy New Year, friends!

The long road back

Dealing with discouragement
when recovering from an injury
.............................................................................................
By Dr. Paula Brusky

njury is part of an active lifestyle. Actually, injury is part of any

life. If you try new activities, live a full life or use your body in
any way, some type of injury, sometime, is inevitable.
For accident-prone me, injuries are a common occurrence.
When I was a professional classical musician I had so many injuries that I became a Ph.D. researcher in injury prevention to keep
myself playing. So I can talk your ear off about scapulo-thoracic
strength training or proper stretching techniques to limit upper
musculoskeletal disorders but something Ive learned through
my research is that the mental aspect of injury recovery is grossly
under discussed. No matter what injury you encounter, the mental
effects will long outlast the physical.
Last year I had an epic year for stupid injuries. First I ruptured
a tendon in my hand planting a tomato. Three month later when
I was finally healed, I did the Tough Mudder, where I broke my
foot and instigated bursitis in my shoulder. (Did I mention I was
accident prone?)
Fast forward through 11 months of rehabilitation and a surgery
and Im now considered healthy. But Im not; Im not even close.
Yes, medically Im 100 percent, but my shoulder is truthfully only
at 80 percent for strength and movement compared to where it was
before injury and surgery. Part of the reason for that is my sport
of choice is pole, which is extremely difficult and demanding on
the body. But even if I wasnt into pole fitness, Id still be struggling
with my recovery because Im now dealing with discouragement.
Tricks that used to be easy for me are now out of reach with my
current abilities and it is frustrating. I feel like I should be further
along than I am. Some days this discouragement is so strong I
dont even want to try.
So how do you deal with discouragement when recovering
from an injury? Here are three tips Ive learned through the years:
1. ACCEPT THAT IT IS GOING TO BE A LONG ROAD BACK.

In reality, there is no back. Your body will always be different

post-injury, but in most cases you can expect to resume the same
activities so that is back in this case. If you push too hard
too soon, youll reinjure yourself and the road will become even
longer. So instead, accept that this is a long journey and set small
milestones. Every day set a goal that is reasonable.
20

Right: Paula
Brusky executes a

Daanen Photography.

2. CELEBRATE EVERY ACCOMPLISHMENT. Yes, getting my

Fireman again (one of the first spins

I learned on pole in 2007) may not
seem like a big deal. But the day I
could execute it well and without
pain post-surgery, I jumped up and
down like I had just done the hardest
trick ever. I pushed myself to get
there. I refuse to think of it as getting
back there because now Im on a
whole new path. There is no back,
only forward, and Im excited to have
reached this point.
3. FIND NEW APPARATUS/SPORTS YOU CAN USE TO
CROSS TRAIN AND IMPROVE YOUR BELOVED SPORT
WHILE RECOVERING. For me, these were aerial hammock and

hoop. Both of these apparatus were less intense on my recovering

shoulder but satisfied my need to be in the air and to be learning
new tricks. As I become more proficient at these, my pole skills
also become easier, as Im building my strength and flexibility.
Plus, on hammock and hoop I dont have the mental struggle of
discouragement because everything I do on these apparatus is
new and exciting.
Youre not alone in being frustrated and discouraged when healing.
But the more you focus on your new path and align it with realistic
goals and fun cross training, the faster youll recover.
Dr. Paula Brusky has a doctorate from the University of Sydney, is a renowned
injury-prevention specialist for musicians and is the owner of Aerial Dance
Pole Exercise, LLC in Appleton. For more information about pole fitness, crosstraining options and the aerial arts, contact Paula at 920-750-1441 or www.

Start early,
move
fast?
...................................................
By Julie Filapek

have just finished reading David

Elkinds much celebrated, The
Hurried Child: Growing Up Too Fast
Too Soon. As I read this classic work on
education, I thought of children I know
and love, about the anxieties of parenthood, and about our educational system.
Beginning in preschool and even earlier
in America, we begin to hurry, to pressure
our children. We ask these little ones to
memorize and recite the alphabet, to learn
their numbers and rudimentary arithmetic, often not for the benefit of the child,
but to reassure ourselves, as parents, that
our children are preternaturally gifted and
destined for success.
Consider a child at the age of 4: What
would he or she want to show the world
of him or herself? What is his or her super
power? A silly joke he cant get enough of?
A dance she made up? A family picture he
made in crayon and glitter glue and pretzels? Thats sufficient greatness right there.
Elkinds book is a call to awareness, a
call to slow down and consider what we
are doing to our children by pushing them
so early into academic tasks and, not too
much later, pushing them to achieve in a
manner that benefits them little but serves
to make us proud.
As Elkind observes, there is little worse
22

Natures Pathways | January 2015

for a child than to have an all-knowing

adult set her on a task a standardized
test in reading, say with the knowledge
that the adult thinks she is expected to do
well on it. What is the message for the child
if she doesnt perform as expected? If she
doesnt do well? The message is that she
is deficient, not very bright. Even though
we know (and the science is clear on this)
that childrens brains develop each at a
unique pace, irrespective of chronological age and/or IQ. The ability to read for
most parents the crucial benchmark is a
light switch that simply cant be turned on
before that childs brain is ready. Suppose
this girls brain is not ready now, but will be
ready in a year or so. Ignoring what developmental science tells us, we have now
not only communicated to her that she is
lacking, but may well have also discouraged her and soured her on reading, an
activity she might otherwise have come
someday to love.
Given this possibility our impatient
approach to reading, resulting too often in
literacy problems, as Elkind notes how
do we justify our desperate rush to have our
kids achieve academically? And what do we
really want for our children? Do we want
them to be reading before they finish first
grade, or do we want them to love to read?

Elkind cites Kenneth Kenniston, professor of human development at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): We
measure the success of schools not by the
kinds of human beings they promote but
by whatever increases in reading scores
they chalk up. We have allowed quantitative standards, so central to the adult
economic system, to become the principal
yardstick for our definition of our childrens worth.
What concerns Elkind, and me, about
this kind of educational ethos is what it
does to our childrens motivation for learning. If what the adults care about is the
demonstration of knowledge (e.g., by way
of test scores), it follows that that is what
their kids will also come to value not the
flash of confidence when the logic of long
division suddenly makes sense, not the
recognition and deep understanding of a
literary metaphor. Just the score, the grade,
the percentile.
What a diminishment, what a travesty,
of what should be a peaceful and lifeenhancing adventure in learning and in
life.
Julie Filapek is a parent and the business manager
for The Cooperative School, a private, nonsectarian primary school in Appleton, serving grades 1-6.

Goals vs.
resolutions
......................................................
By Lisa Jermain

ts no secret that we are at the time of

year when many people make resolutions. According to the Journal of Clinical Psychology at the University of Scranton, the top resolutions made in 2014 were:
1. Lose weight
2. Get organized
3. Spend less, save more
4. Enjoy life to the fullest
5. Stay fit and healthy

7. Quit smoking
8. Help others in their dreams
9. Fall in love
10. Spend more time with family

However, less than 8 percent of those who

make resolutions actually achieve them.
Almost abandon their efforts after just
four weeks. All of this begs the question:

why? Why is such a minority successful at

improving their lives? And why are the rest
so willing to accept failure?
In my opinion, there are two main
reasons. First, many people are interested
in improvements, but not committed to
change or perhaps dont even think it is
possible. They feel stuck in a version of
reality and dont see an alternative path
or open door. Second, there is no action

Success in life doesnt come just by

wishing. It comes by setting goals.
plan to push them forward and get them
unstuck. The status quo is a comfort zone,
even when it isnt necessarily comfortable.
Lets say you want to lose weight but are
skeptical. Maybe you feel you have tried
everything. You have exercised and cut
calories, and never achieved success. You
want a healthier, slimmer body but you
dont really believe it will happen. You start
the year without confidence in success.
With that outlook, of course, you will get
just what you expect.
I think we need to back up a step and
begin with the end in mind. It is important to really think about how your life
would be different if you were vibrantly
healthy and energetic. Or, if your resolutions are about finances, to think about
what your days would be like if you had
the time and money to spend them how
you want. Where would you be? Who
would you be with? Your kids instead of

your co-workers, perhaps? Are you following your passion in life now, or have you
gotten so far from your idea of the perfect
day you cant even envision it anymore? As
Lewis Carroll wrote in Alice in Wonderland, If you dont know where you are
going, any road will get you there.
Look at the list of resolutions again. This
is the stuff of dreams and passion. This is
what will fuel the drive to make changes.
People want to be healthy, excited, learning and loving. Doesnt that sound better
than trading our time for money and
feeling like we are going nowhere?
Success in life doesnt come just by
wishing. It comes by setting goals. My
kids karate instructors teach that you
need to have both short-term and longterm goals. The short-term steps get you
closer to the long-term goal, but break it
up into manageable and achievable increments. There needs to be consistent action

and accountability. However, if each step

gets you closer to a dream, you wont be
derailed by the first setback and give up.
Challenges will come, but they wont cause
you to throw in the towel. You will keep
on, past the first month and beyond.
If you want to be healthier and lose weight,
you can. If you want to improve your finances

Chiropractic
care for
children
.............................................................
By Drs. Amy Nussbaum Schubbe
and Brad Donnermeyer

very parent desires health and wellness for their child.

Chiropractic care for babies and children is a great way
to insure maximum potential for their well-being since it
helps with nerve function.
Spinal nerve stress or dysfunction can be the result of misalignment of the spinal column. Chiropractors perform procedures
called adjustments, which reposition misaligned vertebra, allowing better nerve system communication.
Many newborn conditions (colic, reflux, chronic infections, sleep
issues, etc.) can be attributed in some instances to spinal dysfunction. Physical stress to a babys spinal nerves can start in the womb,
depending on the childs position. A difficult birthing process can
also put stress on a babys head, spinal column and pelvis.
A 1992 survey showed that the most common conditions
for which children visit a chiropractor are earaches, neck pain,
headache, upper respiratory problems, low back pain, allergies,
asthma, enuresis (bedwetting) and thoracic pain. Normal childhood activities such as bike riding, skating and sports can bring
about small yet significant spinal nerve stress. Left untreated, the
stress can build up and lead to greater problems later in life. Subtle
trauma during childhood can affect future development and lead
to impaired nervous system function.
Chiropractic is licensed in all 50 U.S. states for care for children
of all ages. Chiropractic adjustments are modified for the childs
size and unique condition based on the chiropractic case history
and exam.
A common saying in chiropractic is structure dictates function. In a childs first year of life, the spine grows 50 percent in
length. Spinal misalignment left untreated during this time of
rapid growth could have lasting deleterious effects. With this in

How to be a
goal-getter
year-round
.........................................................
By Heather LaFond

t has become socially acceptable to let our New Years resolutions fall to the wayside weeks into the new year. A resolution is defined as a decision or determination; a resolve
to come to a definite or earnest decision; or to determine to do
something. Due to a lack of determination and/or willpower, by
the time you read this, several individuals have already given up
on their resolution completely. What sets successful people apart
from those who are less successful?
MINDSET. Our mindset in itself is often a self-fulfilling proph-

ecy. As Confucius said, The man who says he can, and the man
who says he cannot are both correct.
It is great to have a goal. It is even better to envision yourself
achieving that goal. One way to help you to visualize your success
is to build a dream board. Place all of the things you envision for
yourself on that board. Look at it every day and imagine yourself being successful! Believe you can and you will be capable of
achieving anything.

MOTIVATION. Successful individuals have an extreme motiva-

tion to change. Sometimes motivation comes from ways that their

life, health, or mental and emotional states may be improved once
they are successful.
If you are uncertain what motivates you, here are some questions to ask yourself: When you achieve your goal, how will your
life be improved? What new things will you be able to accomplish?
If your goal is to lose weight, some tasks that are a struggle now
may become less challenging once you get back in shape: climbing
the stairs, carrying that load of laundry, playing with your children and keeping up with grandchildren.
Sometimes, looking at a few of the ways your physical state will
improve may help provide motivation toward your goal. How will
you feel once your goal is achieved? Will you be healthier? Will you
be happier? Will that happiness spread to those around you? A lot of
times, achieving your health and fitness goals has an effect on you in
more ways than the benefit of the goal itself. When you achieve your
goal, you may experience decreased stress, lower blood pressure,
lower cholesterol, increased energy, better sleep, a more positive
mood and a healthier immune system. The benefits go on and on!
With so many positive outcomes possible, make the time to
focus on your health now. Make the reason behind your goal so
important, so huge, so life changing that you have no alternative
but to be successful at achieving it. Focus on what you can do
today. Be determined to be successful and you will be.
PERSISTENCE. You dont need a new year to change. You have

the ability to change at any point in time! Individuals with an

extreme motivation to change strive to achieve goals and consistently prioritize, revise and revisit their goals year-round. Sometimes, circumstances beyond our control inhibit us from being
successful. But if you revisit your goal and revise your plan of
attack, you may be able to skirt around those obstacles and
www.naturespathways.com

continue to move in a forward manner.

Truth be told, it often takes several unsuccessful attempts at
making a lifestyle change before you finally reach success. Keep
going. Dont give up. It takes years of habitual behaviors to get to
where you are currently. Years of habits habits that cannot be
broken overnight. But if you continue to remain persistent, eventually you will be successful.
Its easy to prioritize others and place yourself on the backburner. You need to occasionally take a step back and make yourself a priority. You are worthy of achieving your goals. The only
thing that can get in the way of your success is yourself. Dont let
past failed attempts determine your future.
There are only two days that we cannot change: yesterday and
tomorrow! Take advantage of today. Construct the proper
mindset, motivation and persistence to join others who have been
successful at resolving to change!

Embrace the
new year with
a conscious
breath
.....................................................................
By Katie Presutti, RYT

Without full awareness of breathing, there can be no development

of meditative stability and understanding. Thich Nhat Hanh

ost people take an average of 20,000 breaths in a 24-hour

period. Breathing is often taken for granted, as our bodies
naturally know how to do it and we dont have to give it
much thought. Yet there are many positive outcomes we can experience if we give our breathing some focused attention. Learning to
breathe effectively offers a wealth of benefits for your life.
For many of us, we dont think much about our bodys continued process of breathing until something compromises it. The
common cold takes over and suddenly our ability to breathe
through our nose is lost and we are in discomfort. Modern-day
marketing techniques use this feeling of discomfort to present us
with an assortment of products to bring our breath back into a
place of ease and effortlessness.
What about a more stressful situation where we suspend
breathing completely out of shock or fear? This can be referred to

30

Natures Pathways | January 2015

as the flight-or-fight response and it involves our sympathetic

nervous system going into overdrive. This response is of great
importance when we truly need to run for our lives or adjust in a
chaotic situation.
As our society continues to be flooded with continued stimulation and fast-paced lifestyles, the flight-or-fight mechanism is
being called upon more often for people. Busy lifestyles and the
need to multitask are a common way of life for many. This has led
to the sympathetic nervous system being tapped day after day as
people suspend their breath multiple times, causing undue stress
throughout the entire body.
Learning some conscious breathing techniques can add years
to your life and help your body to operate in the parasympathetic
nervous system more often. When breathing at a rapid pace and
keeping the breath in the upper chest cavity, we operate in the
sympathetic nervous system. When we slow our breath and bring
it all the way to the belly, we activate the parasympathetic nervous
system. This is the preferred state of being for optimal wellness.

Learning some conscious breathing

techniques can add years to
your life and help your body to
operate in the parasympathetic
nervous system more often.
Check out Conscious Breathing by Gay Hendricks, Ph.D., to
learn some simple practices in breath work.
In yoga, breath work is referred to as pranayama. Many yoga
teachers will lead you through a specific pranayama practice at
the beginning or end of a guided class. Keeping the flow of oxygen
going while you do yoga is the most important part of your practice.
Breath of fire is often used in Kundalini classes as it activates your
inner fire and is said to help burn off toxins and build heat in the
body. Alternate-nostril breathing is said to balance the left (feminine) and right (masculine) sides of the body. Ujjayi breath is used
often in yoga practices and can be described as an audible breath
coming from the back of the throat and is intended to help you focus
on taking those deep inhales and exhales all the way to the belly.
Practicing different breathing techniques in a relaxed environment is a great place to start and you can solely dedicate your
attention to it. However, what about a focused breathing practice
while you run or work out at an aerobic level? Dr. John Douillard
performed groundbreaking research in 1993 to write his book,

Body, Mind & Sport. His study revealed the benefits of breathing
through the nose versus the mouth while exercising. While heart
rate was consistent whether the participant was breathing through
the mouth or nose, the breath rate was consistently lower when
happening through the nose. The study also proved that conscious
nose breathing had a lower perceived exertion level and the parasympathetic nervous system was activated at a higher level. Brain
waves were also monitored and they showed the individuals to be
more coherent and the entire brain pattern was more relaxed with
nose breathing. The brain wave patterns recorded were those associated with deep relaxation and a meditative state of consciousness.
Visit Douillards website, www.lifespa.com, to learn his oneminute breathing technique and increase your endurance level
while exercising and nose breathing.
Proper breathing techniques can heal physical ailments, reduce
stress and assist in pain management. Something to add to your
tool box of personal health care is conscious breathing. Explore
some of these options and see what resonates with you and
embrace the new year with a conscious breath.

Healthy in
spirit: A fresh
perspective
on
finances
.............................................................
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

re you taking a fresh look at your personal

finances now that the new year is upon us? The
holiday shopping is done, and the credit card bills
will be coming in this month. Are you prepared? Are you worried?
Did you stay within your budget? Did you have a budget? Was this
a year for handmade gifts, original cards and alternative gift wrap?
Or perhaps this was a year when you chose to donate money to a
good cause in honor of family and friends.
No matter how you approached your holiday spending, the
month of January offers you the opportunity to begin again: not
only with bill paying, but also with overall budgeting and longer
range financial planning.
There are many tools at your disposal for rebooting your
finances, but the most important one is your mental/emotional/
spiritual outlook. You may have a very strong attachment to
shopping, spending, saving, acquiring, investing, hoarding or

scrimping by. Most of us have lots of feelings around money. If you

are troubled about it, maybe its time to take a new look at your
attitudes about wealth and the emotional value of contentment.
Contentment may seem like an alien concept in our consumeroriented society, but it is an extremely valuable commodity. Ultimately, most of us seek to be happy, and we spend a lot of money
trying to get there. If we practice contentment, we find ways to be
happy as we are, with what we have. Does that sound impossibly
old school? It is old school, but it is also one of the most powerful resources at your disposal. It is free and anybody can have as
much contentment as they choose!
Many of us have confused being happy with having more, and
its an endless treadmill; we never arrive at enough. Yet, if we will

let today be enough, if we will let todays financial resources be
OK for now, we can begin to release that drive for more and step
off the treadmill.
This is not the same as settling for poverty! We can still be
open to more good in our lives, but when we stop feeling driven
to attain more, we will find that we have more already. Its one
of those paradoxes that occur in living an awakened life. Less is
more becomes more. We used to call this the simplicity movement. We sought to live more simply, to consume less and so
forth. And for some of us that became a way of life. But for others,
living simply became another route to acquisition. For example,
there is a major periodical available in most stores that advertises

living simply, but its an extravagantly designed publication with

very expensive products advertised; it started out as a modest
magazine, but it soon became one of the more posh publications
on the newsstand!
The bottom line is how you feel about your finances. If you are
unconcerned and you are financially secure enough, there is no
need for a massive overhaul. But if you are dissatisfied or struggling,
there is help available for you. Consider investing in something
that is not about money. What is your preferred spiritual practice?
If you have one, engage in it. If you dont have one, consider finding
one meditation, prayer, inspirational reading or a spiritual
community where you can be an active participant. Often, active
engagement with a spiritual practice is extremely fulfilling and it
helps to truly fill that inner space that so often feels empty.
Living an abundant life is not just about dollars; its about your
inner landscape your emotional and spiritual contentment.
May you find 2015 to be your most abundant year yet!

Change patterns.
Find center.
Transform
your
world!
...................................................................................
By Victoria L. Huss

he year 2015 has arrived! Well-intentioned people all

around the United States are making promises and formulating resolutions. Realizing that there is a problem is the
first step in addressing an issue.
Yet how many of these folks fall short of their goals because
they didnt create enough spaciousness and adaptability to allow
for change and transformation?
Whether it is an aching back, sore neck or plaguing pain from
repetitive use, many times the root cause of such discomfort is
an unhealthy movement pattern that has been hardwired into
the body. Even past trauma and injury can alter the bodys relationship with the affected area, as compensation patterns often
shift muscle recruitment. Areas of the body may be tightened in
response to other areas being overly flexible. The end result is a
whole body that is pulled off of its healthiest and most efficient
alignment.
Getting to the bottom of the aches and pains that affect a
persons quality of life may be as simple as changing how the body

moves and interacts with gravity. Gravity can be either a nourishing or destructive force. When we are dealing with a body
weighed down with years of emotional baggage and stress, or a
body abused from hours and hours of unhealthy sitting posture
behind the wheel or a computer, often we are looking at a physical
structure that has been dramatically pulled off of its natural center
of gravity: a recipe for pain.
In an ideal world, the head, shoulders, hips and ankles would
be effortlessly stacked so as to encourage proper muscle activation and joint tension. Many people today just cannot achieve this
healthy posture without forcefully lifting the head, throwing back
the shoulders or tucking the pelvis. And yet, our bodies are so
innately intelligent, they are unconsciously trying to achieve this
ideal whether we are moving, standing or just being. This disharmony creates tension throughout the body, creates rigidity that
breaks us, and is an utterly exhausting way to journey through life.
Rolfing Structural Integration (or Rolfing SI) is a dynamic
process and holistic system that works with the bodys natural
intelligence to restore balance and alignment. Through consecutive sessions of manual therapy and movement education, Rolfing
SI addresses tension and constrictioning of the fascia, the web of
connective tissue that envelopes, supports and holds the entire
body.
A restriction in one part of the fascial web pulls the entire body
out of alignment. This is why we often see foot or knee problems
originating in the hips, or wrist and hand issues originating in the
shoulders. And sometimes we see lower body immobility create
conditions for hypermobility in the upper body and vice versa.
Striving to balance (the front side of the body with the back side,
the right side with the left side, and finally the inside of the body
with the outside) creates adaptability and space in previously
restricted joints and tissues. As a result, manually working old
habits, poor posture and unhealthy movement patterns out of the

body awakens new possibilities for moving, standing and being.

When you give the body what it needs, it has a greater capacity to
heal itself.
Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D., the founder of Rolfing SI and expert in
understanding the destructive effects of gravity, noted, Some
individuals may perceive their losing fight with gravity as a sharp
pain in their back, others as the unflattering contour of their body,
others as constant fatigue, yet others as an unrelentingly threatening environment. Those over forty may call it old age. And yet all
these signals may be pointing to a single problem so prominent
in their own structure, as well as others, that it has been ignored:
they are off balance, they are at war with gravity.
A body at peace with gravity is one that moves effortlessly
throughout its world with groundedness in the lower body as well
as expansion of the upper body toward the sky. A healthy center of
gravity calms the nervous system and helps us become more adaptive to change while creating resilience in physically, emotionally
and spiritually stressful situations. Reacting becomes adapting.
Changing how we move about and perceive stimuli in our world
can invoke amazing and positive lasting transformation!

Repurpose
your old
yoga mat
A whopping 35 great ideas!
.................................................................
By Crystal M. Hill, E-RYT, CTA, CYPT

have a few old yoga mats I dont plan to ever use again. They
are either old and worn out, or I simply prefer not to use them
anymore. (In other words, they do not perform as well as my
favorite JadeYoga mat.)
I hate creating more waste for our environment. So I did some
research and brainstorming, and investigated ways to reuse the
mats instead of tossing them. Here are some creative ideas I found
or came up with myself:
1. Cut into coasters: We currently use these at my yoga studio
for water bottles to protect the wood floor
2. Shelf protectors under plants
3. Drawer liners
4. Mouse pads
5. Floor protectors: Cut your mat into small segments and
place them underneath the legs of furniture
6. Bath mat for babies so they dont slide around in the tub
7. Shipping material/packaging instead of packing peanuts
8. Paint on the mat like a canvas and create original artwork!
9. Cut into grippy jar openers
10. Floor runner under carpets or rugs

11. Camping mat under sleeping bags or air mattress as an

extra layer for cushioning or heat

12. Dog crate liner

13. Use under your towel at the beach
14. A picnic mat instead of a blanket
15. Door mat
16. Floor mats in car
17. Mat for working under the car
18. Cut to size and put outside the litter box to catch the excess

litter that sticks to your kittys paws

19. Cut into fun shapes to use as bath toys or for dipping in

paint to use like sponges/stamps for art projects

20. Staple or glue to stairs to create tread and prevent slipping

21. Bottle koozies or coffee mug grips
22. Roll up and stick around/under drafty doors and windows
23. A drying tray under your dish rack to keep it in place and

catch excess water

24. Placemats
25. Pet bed/mat

27. Donate to a school, retirement home or other facility

slipping when residents climb in and out of bed)
28. Recycle: The companies Manduka, Jade and Lululemon all
participate in yoga mat recycling
29. Shoe insoles or liners
30. Cut into pieces and put in the bottom of a vase to hold artificial flowers in place
31. Seat for outdoor sporting events

Homeopathy
for
ADHD
...............................................................
By Rebecca Beringer

recent survey of 17,000 parents conducted by the

National Center for Health Statistics reported that 7.5
percent of children ages 6 to 17 are taking medications
for emotional or behavioral difficulties. A majority (80 percent)
of those taking medication have been diagnosed with attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
reported that 10,000 toddlers have been diagnosed as hyperactive and prescribed amphetamine-based drugs like Adderall. Dr.
Lawrence H. Diller, a behavioral pediatrician who was interviewed
for a CNN news report on this issue, said, Theres no evidence
that it works. Theres no evidence that its safe. These are desperate measures. Side effects of these medications include stunted
growth, insomnia and loss of appetite even in older children.
So what is a parent to do when faced with a child exhibiting
the telltale signs of ADHD? Difficulty paying attention or controlling impulsive behaviors and being overly active can cause trouble
at school and stress in the home. Parents face incredible pressure to use medication. Some turn to natural methods like diet
adjustment, herbal and supplement support, or changes in school
environment. Those who are interested in a natural, gentle and

alternative method need to look at what homeopathy has to offer.

Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine over 200 years old
that uses substances from nature made into homeopathic remedies in U.S. Food and Drug Administration-regulated pharmacies
to address issues of concern. Emotional difficulties, hyperactivity and attention troubles are all within the scope and practice of
homeopathy and its application is shown to have incredibly positive results without harsh or irreversible side effects.
One study conducted by the Universities of Alberta and
Toronto showed that 63 percent of participants had significant
improvement with homeopathy. An additional study published
in the British Homeopathic Journal showed that 75 percent of
participants responded positively in three months.
Homeopathic philosophy holds that symptoms being experienced by a person are merely an imbalance in the energetic
system. The application of a homeopathic remedy helps stimulate
the body to heal itself to release from these stuck patterns. Many
homeopathic products intended for relief of ADHD symptoms
exist on the market, but homeopathy works most effectively when
applied on the most individual level with a professional homeopath. While traditional models of treating ADHD look at the

similarities of children with ADHD, the

homeopath will look for what is unique to
each case. This individualization allows for
the most effective results, restoring balance
and calm to the entire system.
Studies and statistics aside, there is
imbalance in someone suffering from
ADHD and very real consequences and
stress put on the family unit. A local parent
had large success applying homeopathy for
ADHD in her son and tells her story:
My youngest son is now 12 and was diagnosed with ADHD after first grade. At the
time he was impulsive, loud and fidgety.
Based on the issues this was causing in school,
we decided to put him on medication at the
beginning of second grade. The medication did
work but with side effects, including appetite
and weight loss, digestion difficulties, sleep
issues, and headaches. Two years after starting, he told us he could no longer taste food
and begged us to take him off the medication.
At this time I began looking for alternatives and discovered homeopathy. We
visited a homeopath and started our son on
a homeopathic remedy tailored to his individual needs. One nice aspect of working
with homeopathy is that we could have
chosen to continue using his medication
in addition to the remedy, but we chose to
discontinue. One of the things that surprised
me was how other healing was also taking
place. First his digestion and constipation
issues went away. Next his anxiety and fear
that something was going to happen to his
parents dissipated. Over the course of using
the homeopathic remedies, his attention
and ability to stay on task has increased.
Another skill he gained in the process was
learning to recognize when his system is out
of balance and needs a boost. Today we do
not even consider him as having an ADHD
diagnosis. We are so pleased we chose homeopathy as the course for our son.

Who is

is, my doctor, you are one amongst
millions of Americans who see their

complaint. Low back pain is the No. 2
reason for a trip to the doctors office in the

of chiropractic.
Now, let me ask you another question:
Do you want to reduce, if not eliminate,
your low back pain? From a bone and

back pain. Whats more, the types of pain

medication that are commonly offered
up in traditional clinical settings, while
masking the pain, do not address the root
cause of the pain.
Low back pain has a number of causes.
Some of the most common ones are muscle
strain or injury, pressure on or pinching of
a nerve, and degenerative diseases such as
osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and degenerative disc disease. Both muscle strain and pressure on the spinal cord due to a degenerative
condition like arthritis will usually feel like a
dull, constant ache at a localized area in the
low back. Pain that results from a pinched
nerve or muscle spasm usually manifests as
a sudden and sharp pain that can sometimes
radiate down the backs of the legs.
In Chinese medicine, low back pain is
usually associated with cold penetrating
the meridians that pass through the low
back and sacrum, qi and blood stagnation,
or kidney qi deficiency. Acute, sharp pain
with a sudden onset that causes stiffness
and limited range-of-motion is considered
a cold condition and can be successfully
treated with therapeutic bodywork techniques that warm the tissue and meridians,
such as scrubbing over the low back and
administering moxibustion.
Sharp pain that radiates down the backs
of the legs, such as the type of pain felt
when the piriformis compresses the sciatic
nerve, can be treated by applying steady,
firm pressure to a local acupressure point,
such as Gallbladder 30. This gets stuck qi
moving at the area of nerve compression,

relieving the pain.

A chronic, dull ache in the low back,
which is sometimes accompanied by a
feeling of cold at the extremities or locally
in the low back, is best treated by tonifying kidney qi by applying acupressure at a
series of local and distal points.
The advantage of working with a holistic
pain-management practitioner trained in
Chinese medicine is the ability to receive
a comprehensive evaluation that takes into
account a plethora of factors surrounding
the nature of the pain, as well as environmental and lifestyle factors unique to the
individual that may impact his or her pain.
The treatment plan is tailored to the individual, creating a customized strategy for
yielding the best possible outcome.

Building a strong

FOUNDATION

for a healthy lifestyle

Lake Park Swim & Fitness
elevates members to success
By Rebecca Bentz

re you inspired by 2015 and hoping to get in shape? If so, youre not
alone. Of the 40 percent of Americans who make New Years resolutions, most will endeavor to live a healthier lifestyle, whether its by
losing weight (21 percent), exercising (14 percent) or eating better (7
percent), according to the Huffington Post. If youve made similar resolutions in the past only to fall back on old habits, youre still in good company:
Only 8 percent of people achieve their New Years goals, according to Forbes.
Why is it so hard to stick to a resolution? Many goal-setters rush ahead
and try to do too much, too soon, without taking the time to ensure
theyre starting off on the right foot. They simply dont have the resources,
support and accountability they need to succeed.
Luckily you can find those three necessary ingredients and more locally
at Lake Park Swim & Fitness in Menasha.

Experience to support member needs

Lake Park Swim & Fitness (LPSF) is now in its seventh year, and its by
design and not luck that the health club and its members have come
this far. Co-owners and managers Felicia Christianson, Megan Collins
and Jane Dias have built a full-service health club catered to helping
members make lasting lifestyle changes. Unlike the majority of New Years

resolution-makers, Lake Park members have enjoyed far more success

than failure in transforming their health.
Key to this success is the Lake Park mission: We want to inform our
members; we want to connect them with a professional inside the club,
along with other members; and we want to inspire them, Christianson
explains.
Perhaps part of the inspiration Lake Park provides comes from knowing
that as a member, youre working with the very best. Christianson, Collins
and Dias have decades of health club experience among them, and have
worked together for the past 22 years. Whats more, these women have an
unyielding passion that matches their experience.
But the owner-managers arent the only ones who bring a wealth of skills
and knowledge to the Lake Park community. Nearly all of the clubs eight
personal trainers hold a bachelors degree or higher, as well as nationally
recognized certifications. Of the clubs 31 high-level-certified group exercise
instructors, a whopping 90 percent have taught for more than 10 years.
Staff credentials isnt the only place the club has recognized the power
of knowledge. Lake Park knows that to make healthy lifestyle changes,
people dont just need fitness opportunities they need information,
and empowering through learning is a key component to Lake Parks
approach to membership.

This stretches into how LPSF kicks off its relationships with members.
Before exercisers even set foot on the weight room floor, for example, LPSF
provides an initial physical assessment and does a health history, which
helps individuals get a picture of where their fitness level stands now, and
what areas might be best to work on. Plus, the clubs personal trainers
provide a one-hour complimentary new member orientation to explain
and demonstrate how both the cardio and circuit weight machines work
even going so far as to create a complete general workout for the member
to use on their own. Additionally, there are personal training specials for
new members to encourage members to do one-on-one training.
All of this preparation helps new members feel comfortable and at
home at the club. Plus, it helps individuals make healthy changes at a
pace they can handle, that meets their individual health and fitness needs.
Sometimes members try to do too much, Collins says. We want to
help them work within their boundaries so they dont get hurt.

A community to bridge goals and results

arent there were going to say, Its good to see you! Weve missed you!
Its those types of connections that help people be successful.

Multiple options reinforce no excuses

Of course, no one wants to make a lifestyle change that they dont like.
Lake Park makes sure members realize that they can be healthy and
happy, no matter their goals or current fitness level.
Everybody has a place here at the club, Collins explains.
Whatever activities interest you and keep you moving, chances are
youll find them in Lake Parks 24,000 square-foot facility. Not interested in
logging hours on the treadmill or elliptical? Try one or more of Lake Parks
75 weekly group exercise classes for fitness plus camaraderie or perhaps
even a bit of friendly competition. All of these classes are included with a
membership (yes, even yoga and TRX!).
Rather focus on your goals individually? Try working with a personal
trainer or on your own. The clubs state-of-the-art cardio and circuit
machines, immense weight room, and four-lane lap pool offer countless
options and fitness levels.
Want to improve your eating habits? The trainers at LPSF offer nutrition guidance that helps members not only make better choices now, but
helps them stick with those habits into the future.
When you combine exercise and nutrition changes together, both are
going to be more successful. When you start to eat better, you feel better;
therefore, your workout whatever that might be becomes easier, as
does as your recovery, Dias explains. When you start to exercise, you begin
to see changes in your body. Whether its for weight loss or gaining muscle
and building a different physique, youll begin to
feel better, have more energy and your
clothing will fit better. These types of
changes to your body will motivate
you to stick with your new healthy
eating habits.

In addition to being informed, two major factors in achieving lifestyle

changes are encouragement and accountability. Sure, success requires
internal motivation: you have to want to make healthy changes after all.
But those changes are so much easier when others celebrate you each
step of the way and help you get back on track to achieving your goals
should you stray.
We know Megan, Felicia and I that in order for people to be
successful in any change, whether thats a nutrition change, whether
thats an exercise change, or simply a lifestyle change, people need to
be supported, Dias explains. The advantage of LPSF
is being a full-service club. Truly, from the
minute you walk through our door,
you are going to feel right away that
people are here to support you,
care about you and really see
you through.
The numbers back up Dias
words. Lake Parks staff is
invested in their members:
The clubs member retention rates exceed national
averages, and Lake Park still
has better than 85 percent
of its original staff. Lake Park
does whatever it can to show
members that theyre not just part
of a club they are a valued member
of a community. That commitment
helps keep members on a healthy path.
Right from the moment they walk in
the door they feel connected and kind
of accountable, because now [theyre]
not just a number. That transfers right

End dry
winter skin
for
good
.......................................................
By Caitlin Brotz

his time of year, your skin has

been through a lot especially
in Wisconsin. The exposure to the
dry hot air inside and the stripping cold
air outside depletes the protective layer of
fatty acids and lipids that keeps moisture in
your skin. Depletion of fatty acids can lead
to eczema and psoriasis for many people.
Many people who wash their hands
frequently notice the drying effects of
stripping fatty acids from the skin. It seems
no matter how much lotion we put on, we
just cant reclaim the lost moisture. This
is because most lotions dont contain the
fatty acids and lipids your body is looking
for and your body can only produce so
much of its own.
So how do we get more of this complex
in our bodies? Eating foods high in
this complex helps, such as fish oil or
nuts. Besides eating fatty acids, you can
also apply them topically; this gets the
needed complex straight to the source. As
mentioned, nut oils are particularly high in
the protective fatty acids and lipids.
One of my favorite wintertime oils for
the skin is avocado oil. Its light enough to
use every day but it is certainly up to the
job of helping the skin stay moisturized
and restore its protective fatty acid and
lipid balance.
Another benefit of avocado oil is its use

strip the precious fatty acids and lipids my
skin is desperately craving. Avocado oil
helps to dissolve dirt, old oil and makeup
while replenishing the fatty acids lost to
harsh weather and hand washing.
Stay ahead of the game this winter and
keep avocado oil in your skin care routine.
Your skin will thank you.

The
details of
doula
care
.................................................
By Mary E. Smits, CD, CBE

DOULA. WHAT A STRANGE WORD.

If you are pregnant or currently trying to

conceive, you have likely heard it. But what
does it mean, and what does a doula do?
A doula is a professional woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational
support during pregnancy, labor and just
after childbirth. Using nonmedical advice
and techniques, a doula supports the birthing mother and her partner throughout

48

Natures Pathways | January 2015

labor and delivery to help her have a more

satisfying birthing experience. Doulas
work alongside midwives, physicians,
nurses and fathers, and play an exceptionally large role in improving both the physical and emotional journeys of mothers and
newborns.
Most doulas provide two to three prenatal visits, allowing generous time for getting
to know you and your birth goals. She will
learn your personal preferences, priorities

and concerns, and supply evidence-based

pregnancy and birth-related information.
She will use her skills and knowledge to
teach both you and your partner beneficial
techniques and options, varying according to her training, experience and background. Some doulas also offer training
for family and friends who will be present,
ensuring that your entire support team will
be able to give you the best care possible.
Well before your due date arrives, you will
have developed a trusting relationship
with her, and you will have confidence in
your ability to give birth.
When labor day arrives, your doula will
be by your side when you desire her to be;
often arriving for very early labor, well
before there is a need to transport to the
planned place of active labor and birth.
You may choose to labor at home for a
while, take a walk in a nearby park or run
some last-minute errands and, if desired,
your doula will be with you.
Your professional doula will stay with
you throughout labor; she does not change
shifts or go on break unless you request
privacy. Her goal is solely to meet your
needs. She will not be offended if you want
some alone time. However, if you desire,
she will be close to you and accessible to
you the entire time.
A doula is trained in ways to improve
progress and ease discomfort. She offers a
wide variety of physical comfort measures:
www.naturespathways.com

massage, positioning and specific counterpressure techniques, to name only a few, as

well as emotional and verbal support including visualizations, imagery, reassurance and
encouragement. Some doulas offer specialties
such as essential oil therapy, aromatherapy,
music therapy and acupressure.
She can provide explanations, interpret
what medical staff have said and also help
you communicate your needs. A well-trained,
mother-centered doula will faithfully support
decisions that you and your partner have made
(including choices of pain-medication-assisted
birth). If wanted, many doulas will also be your
labor and birth photographer and provide you
with precious photo memories.
Often doulas look after your partner as well,
acting as a resource and guide and making sure
his needs are met and questions are answered.
Shell help him find beneficial ways to support
you, and give him the training and knowledge
he needs to be your No. 1 emotional and physical caregiver. A doula will not disturb the privacy
and intimacy of labor and birth; in fact, a doula
will help protect your privacy and create an intimate atmosphere in a busy, institutional setting.
After your baby is born, your doula will stay

with you an hour or two. She may take precious

photos, answer questions, see that your nutritional needs are met, and help facilitate initial
breastfeeding. Over the next few weeks, most
doulas are available to provide information,
reassurance, referrals and a follow-up visit to
discuss the birth from your perspective, answer
questions related to your birth experience, and
to share birth photos and memories.
According to research, having a doula on
your birth team is significant in achieving your
optimal labor and birth experience. By hiring
a trained, certified and experienced doula, you
can be assured of knowledgeable, well-rounded
and comprehensive pregnancy, labor and birth
support.

Natural versus
synthetic
hormone
therapy
Answering questions about
bio-identical hormone
replacement therapy
......................................................................
By Steven V. Bittorf, M.D., Ph.D.

he ongoing controversy over what constitutes organic or

natural foods continues to perplex the average American
family, particularly the parent who is charged with buying
groceries. While they are typically more expensive to buy, organically grown fruits, vegetables, fish and meat are becoming increasingly popular because they seem to be healthier than those which
are doused with pesticides or herbicides. The basic concern about
synthetically manufactured foods or drugs involves the unintended consequences of their long-term consumption.
Controversy regarding such synthetically manufactured
substances is based on the concern about the possible negative

50

Natures Pathways | January 2015

consequences, which are not clear at this time. Will these synthetic
materials result in unintended health consequences in the future?
No one can be sure.
The usual aging process leads to slow decline in the levels of estrogen and progesterone in women and testosterone in both men and
women. The decline in hormone levels begins during middle age
and slowly progresses long before symptoms occur. Women often
experience premenopausal or postmenopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, fatigue, mental fog, memory
problems, insomnia, headaches, decreased libido, breast tenderness, or skin and vaginal atrophy, which may affect sexual activity.
For men, symptoms related to low testosterone are evidenced by
reduced muscle strength, irritability, mental fog, reduced concentration or erectile dysfunction. Both men and women who have
hormone replacement therapy experience relief of these symptoms and receive other benefits, such as increased bone strength,
decreased cholesterol, cardiovascular protection, increased muscle
strength and reduced incidence of Alzheimers dementia.
Controversy regarding synthetically manufactured hormones
is based on the known and possible negative consequences of
long-term use. When significant health safety concerns arose in
2002 for women using synthetic hormone replacement, millions
stopped taking it according to one survey. Patients and physicians
alike began to search for alternatives. Fortunately, several forms of
bio-identical hormone replacement therapy exist and follow in a
long line of drugs derived from natural plant sources. According
www.naturespathways.com

to a Vanderbilt review, for thousands of years weve turned to

plants for relief from disease. Examples include morphine derived
from opium poppies, aspirin from willow bark, and hormones
(estrogen and testosterone) from soy and yams. Thus, bio-identical hormones provide a safe and effective alternative to proprietary, synthetic hormones.
The wide assortment of available bio-identical hormone treatments often leads to confusing and complicated situations for
consumers who are interested in pursuing this therapy. Bio-identical hormone preparations include creams, oral forms, injections
and hormone pellets. These approaches have differing effectiveness, side effects, absorption and metabolism depending on each
preparation and route of administration.
This article will focus on the advantages and benefits of
hormone pellet implantation. Pellet therapy uses soy and yam
derived hormones that are identical to the natural hormones
in our body (estrogen and testosterone). These bio-identical
hormones are compounded by a Food and Drug Administration
(FDA)-approved pharmacy into concentrated pellets the size of
a grain of rice. The pellets are custom prescribed for each patient
and implanted under the skin.
Hormone release from pellets is cardio-activated and delivers
consistent, healthy levels of hormones for three to five months in
women, and four to six months in men. Pellets avoid the fluctuations, or ups and downs, of hormone levels seen with every
other method of delivery. Estrogen and testosterone delivered by
subcutaneous pellets maintain the normal to optimal levels of
hormones necessary for symptom relief and disease prevention.
Pellets do not increase the risk of blood clots like conventional or
synthetic hormone replacement therapy.
What if my physician says, there is no data to support the use
of pellet implants? And is it safe? Its about making an informed
choice. Researched and developed since 1939 in the U.S. and
Europe, there is a myriad of data to support the long-term safety
and efficacy of hormones delivered by pellet implants. Bio-identical hormone pellet therapy is being used safely on five continents
and has been studied for eight decades, not only looking at safety
and efficacy but prevention of disease states such as breast cancer,
heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimers dementia, type 2 diabetes
and so much more.
Countless women (and men) have made the switch to bioidentical hormones, long preferred for replacement therapy in
Japan, France and other European countries. It is finally receiving considerable attention in the U.S. and being more widely
prescribed. Bio-identical pellet implants are a consistent, safe and
effective option that release hormones into the body over several
months and provide many long term benefits.

Award-winning
recycling right

front yard
Outagamie County recognized for
best overall program in the state
...................................................................................
By Chris Miller

n 2013, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

(WDNR) became increasingly aware that successful recycling
programs deserved recognition for their hard work. With that
thought in mind, the WDNR created the Excellence in Wisconsin Recycling Award. The award is separated into three categories:
Project or Initiative, Overall Program, and Special Event.
After making much progress in recent months and years,
Outagamie County Recycling was nominated in the Overall
Program category. The WDNR bestowed the award to Outagamie
County in October 2014 for the following six successful recycling
endeavors.

basis. Outagamie County Recycling educates through a variety

of methods, including site tours, off-site presentations, outreach
booths, a website, Facebook postings and personal phone calls.
Recycling program educators provide residential and business
information on not only recycling requirements, but also waste
reduction, reuse and composting options. The county works
closely with many special events by providing a recycling bin
loan program, helping local events become green. Noncompliance letters sent to businesses, apartment owners and residents
assists in boosting the already impressive recycling rates within
the county.

1. Education and outreach

2. Working together

The year 2013 was a busy and robust one for Outagamie County
Recycling. A major portion of the programs outreach consists of
educating students, businesses and the general public on a daily

Early in 2013, Outagamie Countys recycling coordinator helped

WDNRs recycling education and outreach coordinator create
comprehensive educational materials on proper sharps disposal.

Outagamie County Recycling, in partnership with Outagamie

County Public Health, devised an outreach plan for local clinics
and health care providers who teach self-injection to patients. This
plan included distribution of proper sharps disposal brochures
along with self-injection education to be used by health care
providers and clinics.

3. Compliance

Continuing to work side by side with the WDNR staff, Outagamie County Recycling pressed the Fox River Mall into recycling
compliance by implementing a public area recycling program. By
mid-March, 2013, the Fox River Mall set up single-stream recycling bins in the main corridors and food court area. The recycling program has proven successful with a very low contamination rate.

4. Increase recycling tonnage

Because Outagamie County operates the Tri-County Single-Stream

MRF, our communities continue to realize the many benefits of
single-stream recycling. To help increase recycling rates, Outagamie County Recycling continues to promote and guide municipalities to switch to using large poly recycling carts for collection. The
county guides this process by educating residents and coordinating
a smooth collection transition with the hauler.
During the spring of 2013, the cities of Appleton and Kaukauna,
whose combined household count is nearly 30,000, procured and
implemented poly recycling carts for fully automated recycling

collection. Since Appletons implementation of carts, they have

saved over $45,000 in landfill disposal fees due to the fact their
recycling tonnage increased 19 percent while their landfill
tonnage decreased by 9.9 percent.

5. Waste reduction

As Outagamie County strives to be an industry leader in recycling and waste reduction, the county was extremely happy to
announce in August 2013 that it became one of the first facilities
in the state to implement a voluntary mattresses and box spring
recycling pilot program. The pilot program ran until the end of
June 2014, and it will now be evaluated for long-term feasibility.

6. Recycle Everywhere

In an effort to build upon public place recycling and to promote

Recycle Here Recycle Everywhere, Outagamie County Recycling continued its focus on convenience store recycling. In midOctober, 2013, one success of this effort was seen as all MotoMart
convenience stores in Outagamie County implemented recycling
programs by placing recycling containers at the pumps and near
their entrance doors.
Chris Miller is the recycling coordinator for Outagamie County. Chris supervises
the recycling collection program and education program for all 32 communities in Outagamie County. She sits on the Associated Recyclers of Wisconsins
Board of Directors and serves as secretary to the board. Chris is a member of
the Outagamie County Sustainability Committee and participates in other local
sustainability groups. She coordinates the hazardous waste collections, manages
the universal waste streams and is involved in several waste reduction projects.

Break through
your weightloss plateau
4 great tips to help
you succeed
......................................................................
By Kim Neher, Clinical Nutritionist

our new diet and fitness routine had you dropping pounds
and looking and feeling good until it suddenly just
stopped. Now what?
So, you think youve hit a plateau? A plateau is essentially a
point in your health where things just need to be adjusted. Health
is an ongoing journey, and should never been viewed as a destination point.
Having a stretch where your weight loss slows to nothing is a
natural phenomenon, so do not get discouraged. Youre consuming fewer calories than you used to, so your metabolism has
slowed down to conserve them. Keep in mind that as long as you
stick with your workouts and healthy eating, youll typically start
losing weight again after about three weeks.
Its also important to measure success through other positive
changes to your body, like a smaller waist and hips from lost
inches. You also want to measure success by noticing your body
becoming more toned through lost inflammation and maintenance of lean tissue. If you dont want to wait for the plateau to
end on its own, there are things you need to ask yourself if you
want to jumpstart your losing streak.

1. Are you keeping track of your

daily calories?

In all honestly, plateaus are somewhat of a myth, and what tends

to be happening is someone claiming to have hit one isnt paying
enough attention to detail. When you first start a diet and fitness
program, you make drastic changes maybe you gave up soda,
sugar, fast foods your body responded to that and you lost
weight fast.
To continue to lose weight, youll need to create a consistent
54

Natures Pathways | January 2015

calorie deficit, which means youll need to start paying attention to

what really matters: how many calories youre consuming, where
those calories are coming from and how many youre burning.
Multiples studies have shown that the more regularly someone
keeps a diet/exercise log, the more weight they will lose. Pay attention to those dietary details because it will help you realize how
many calories you burn on a day-to-day basis. Many people dont
realize that they truly arent eating enough!

2. Are you trying to lose vanity pounds?

If youre only trying to lose 5, 10 or 15 pounds, youre in a different place than someone who wants to drop over that amount, or
well into the triple digits. Youre not necessarily considered obese,
and these pounds are connected to simply wanting to look better.
The human body doesnt want to be carrying around excess
weight, so it will respond to diet and exercise. When you have a
smaller amount of weight to lose, your body is already healthy,
which makes it tougher to lose weight. What people in this situation
often do is cut more calories or increase their time at the gym but
this method will not work. All that does is slow your metabolism
down and send your body into starvation mode. The best quick fix
is to give your body a little more food so it feels secure. Varying
your calorie intake and the specific foods that youre getting your
calories from is a great way to switch things up for your body.

3. Do you need to change up your workout?

If youre overweight (not trying to lose vanity pounds), tracking

the foods and calories you eat every day, and still not shedding
any weight, heres what you need to do: Switch up your workout.
You might not realize this, but your body will adapt to any type of
www.naturespathways.com

exercise. The first time you go run a mile, it is probably going to be

rough. But by the 40th time you run a mile, its a lot easier, right? As
you get used to a type of exercise, it becomes less challenging and,
as a result, less effective. Thats why its so important to mix it up.
Change your workout routine by type, frequency, time or intensity.

4. Do you have a hormone imbalance or

underlying health concern?

If youve followed everything above and nothing has worked,

theres one last thing that might be causing your plateau: inflammation, hormone imbalance or an underlying health condition.
For example, food sensitivities, thyroid disorders, insulin resistance, polycystic ovary syndrome they could all be making
your body hold onto pounds.
Dont immediately assume this is the problem, but if you have
truly tried everything else, it might be worth getting specialized
blood work done and working with someone who can evaluate
you personally.

Get back
your back
4 strengthening tips
..................................................
By Tammy Thyssen

inter shoveling is a hard and long chore that we all get

sick of. Often, we cant wait for it to be done. Rather
than hating it with a passion, take the time to build
your back so you can get the shoveling done and enjoy the rest of
your day.
Its not that difficult; just a few minutes of exercise every day
or even twice a day will strengthen your back so much. Do it for
a better you and to no longer be in pain. Do not wait until your
back pain gets so bad that theres no turning around and the only
option you have is surgery.
If you want to take action and are ready to build a strong back
for yourself, here is how you get started: Give yourself 15 minutes
once or twice a day with the following simple exercises. I use them
with every client who comes to me and have had great results.
Start with the first actions and master them. Do not try all of
this at once. Graduate to the
other actions for progressive
progress.

1. Back press

Position: Lie on your back,

knees up, feet planted on the floor. Elongate your butt along the
floor so your lower backs natural arch goes to the floor.
Action: Now press your bellybutton to the floor for five seconds,
then release. Repeat gradually, holding it longer, up to count of 10.
You should be able to breathe and talk while you do this. If you
find it hard to breathe, be sure to press down; dont suck in.
Action 2: While your back is pressed to the floor, lift your right
foot 1 inch off the floor. (Do not lose your backs connection to the
floor.) Lift five times, then repeat with your left foot. Next try both
feet simultaneously, again with a 1-inch lift.
Action 3: One leg at a time, lift your knee to your chest but dont
touch the chest. Keep your leg bent as you bring it back to the
floor. Repeat 10 times for each leg. Then
try both legs at the same time. Tip: Do
not let your back arch at all, at any
time. If it does, youre not ready to
move on to the next exercise.

2. Hip lift

4. Wall stands or sit

Action: Lift
and squeeze
your glutes until your shoulders, hips and knees are aligned.
Return your glutes toward the ground to finish, but try not setting
your butt on the floor between reps.

Action: Tilt your hips slightly forward and place your

lower back flat against the wall. This is just like
the back press on the floor, but standing against
the wall. Press your bellybutton in so you have a
gap in the front of your pants and are still able
to talk. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds. Repeat.

Position: Same
as exercise 1.

Position: Stand with your back and butt against the

wall.

Action 2: Pause at the top of this move. Hold your hips high and
press and release your knees toward each other. Repeat 20 times.

Your back is important to you. Take care of

it and itll take care of you.

3. Pointer dog

Position: On all fours, with your bellybutton pulled in tight so

your back is flat.

Action:
Lift
your left leg out
behind you without
tilting your hips, Lift
your right arm out in front of you. Stay as flat as possible. Hold
your lifted limbs parallel to the floor for 30 seconds. Repeat the
move with your right leg and left arm.
Action 2: Lower your toes and hand to the floor; tap the floor
and lift again. Repeat 15 times.

Action 3: Bring your hand and knee underneath your torso, tap
together and extend them outward again. Repeat 15 times.

A few additional things to keep in mind to help you have

a healthy back: Stand tall with your shoulders over your hips.
Avoid leaning onto one leg as you stand; instead place your feet
shoulder-width apart so both legs equally share your weight.
I dont think chairs or car seats are designed for healthy backs,
so you need to adjust your posture. When you sit, dont sink your
lower back into the chair; use a pillow to support it so you sit tall!
In the car, if you have a lumbar, be sure to max it out!
If you practice these habits they will become natural and not a
chore. Good luck to you all and may you have healthy backs for
life. It doesnt come easy but it does become easy.

What you should

know about
reflexology
How this time-tested practice
can help you heal
...................................................................................
By Sharon Paprocki

here is an old saying, When your feet hurt, everything

hurts. Equally so, when our feet feel good, so will the rest
of us. If you have ever been the recipient of a foot rub, you
are probably nodding your head in agreement.
Reflexology goes beyond the simple feel-good nature of a foot rub.
It is a noninvasive, holistic approach to releasing toxins, promoting
balance and encouraging the bodys natural healing processes.

Frequently asked questions by people

considering a reflex session
Question: What are the benefits?

Reflexology is based on the theory that areas on the feet, hands

and ears correspond to organs and systems of the body. Practitioners believe that a specific type of pressure applied to these areas,
otherwise known as reflexes, will have a positive effect on the
corresponding organs and parts of the body.
Reflexologists use reflexology maps. The map for feet illustrates that each foot represents a vertical half of the body. The left
foot corresponds to the left side of the body and all the organs
there, while the right foot connects to the right side of the body
and all its organs. For instance, the liver is on the right side of the
body; therefore, the corresponding reflex area is on the right foot.

Answer: Reflexology attempts to release congestion and/or

stress through the reflex zones while stimulating the release of
endorphins. This can reduce pain, improve circulation of fluids
and elimination of fluid buildup, normalize body functions,
improve sleep and quality of rest, lower anxiety, and increase the
feeling of well-being. Clients often report a deep sense of relaxation during their session.
The University of Minnesota reports, Although reflexology is
not used to diagnose or cure health disorders, millions of people
around the world use it to complement other treatments when
addressing conditions like anxiety, asthma, cancer treatment,
cardiovascular issues, diabetes, headaches, kidney function, PMS,
and sinusitis. Reflexology has also been credited with reducing
sick leave and absenteeism amongst employees.

A storied history

Question: What can I expect during a session?

How it works

Reflexology is an ancient practice, which makes its beginnings and

history hard to outline. It is believed that some form of reflexology
originated in China over 5,000 years ago. The first documented
evidence showing the practice comes from within an Egyptian
tomb dated to 2330 B.C.
Reflexology in the United States is credited to Dr. William
Fitzgerald, who is known as the father of reflexology and its zone
therapy. A colleague of Fitzgerald and physiotherapist, Eunice
Ingham developed the foot maps still in use today. Ingham is
also recognized for having introduced reflexology practices to the
nonmedical community in the 1930s.

Natures Pathways | January 2015

Answer: During a reflexology session, you will be comfortably

positioned on a massage table or in a reclining chair, giving the
practitioner easy access to your feet. The reflexologist will use his
or her thumbs or fingers to apply the appropriate alternating pressure to the various zones of both your feet. Some practitioners will
include a partial hand treatment as a part of a session.
Reflexology is generally pain-free, although you may feel brief,
mild discomfort as the practitioner moves through the various
zones. Always feel free to discuss this with your reflexologist.
Sessions can last between 30 and 60 minutes.
www.naturespathways.com

Question: Following a session, what should I know?

Answer: Besides your feet feeling great, a deep sense of relaxation is often reported. Your body has just released toxins and
it will continue to do so for a bit after the session. Drink lots of
water to help your body rid itself of the toxins and impurities. On
occasion, some clients experience temporary headache, diarrhea,
coldness, nausea or sinus congestion. This usually passes within
24 hours.
Question: How many sessions does it take to feel better?
Answer: Clients usually report feeling better after one session.
Reflexology seems to work on the most current stress first. For
example, if you were raking leaves over the weekend and scheduled a reflexology session to ease the stiffness, you would most
likely feel better after one session. Now lets say you have had back
or neck pain for several years. Although you may feel better after
one session, additional sessions may be required in order to experience lasting relief.

A fun self-help reflex tip

Although its helpful to have a reflexologist work on your feet,

your opportunity for sinus relief, tension release or headache
relief is only a golf ball away.
Heres a tip from Golfsmith on using a golf ball for reflexology: Interlock your fingers and clasp both hands together with
the golf ball between the palms. Roll the ball between your palms,
covering as much surface area of your hands as possible. With
your hands unclasped you can roll the ball between the fingers to
help stretch them and increase the benefits You dont have to
apply hard pressure the dimples and air pockets do this instead
in a natural and relaxing fashion. Because the ball is a sphere, its
easy to manipulate in your hands to cover the most area.
If you have never had a reflexology session or its been a while
since your last session, consider adding a reflex session to your
2015 to-do list. Your feet and body will thank you!

Egg-alicious tips
and
recipes

By Emily Niesen

ggs alone are so versatile and

nutritious, and so dependable for
any meal. Buying eggs, however,
can be very confusing for the healthconscious consumer. Labels like allnatural, free-range, grass-fed and
organic all sound healthy, but the best
way to know which eggs to buy is to
know your farmer. Just like any animal
protein, the health conscious consumer
knows how his or her food is produced.
Below are some simple recipes for eggs
made to order. Use fresh eggs for the best
results and dont be scared to eat the yolk!
SCRAMBLED: Beat 4 eggs, cup milk

and ground pepper in a bowl until

blended. Meanwhile, heat 2 teaspoons
butter in a skillet until hot. Add in egg
mixture. As eggs set, pull, lift and fold
until no liquid remains.
FRIED: Heat 2 teaspoons butter in skillet

over medium-high heat. Crack eggs (hint:

eggs hold their shape if broken in a small cup
first) into pan. Turn heat to low and cook
until whites set and yolk begins to harden.
Flip egg and cook until desired doneness.
HARD BOILED: Place eggs in a sauce-

pan large enough to hold them in a

single layer. Add cold water just enough

to cover eggs. Heat over high heat until
boiling. Remove from heat. Cover, let
eggs stand in hot water about 15 minutes.
Drain and rinse with cold water.
POACHED: Boil a couple inches of water

in a saucepan. Keep liquid simmering

gently. Gently crack eggs one at a time into
a small bowl or cup. Hold the dish close to
surface of water and slip egg into water.
Cook eggs until whites are completely
set and yolks begin to thicken but are not
hard. Lift eggs from water with slotted
spoon. Sprinkle with ground pepper.
BASIC FRENCH OMELET: Crack eggs

into a bowl with a pinch of pepper. Beat

with a fork. Add 1 teaspoon of butter to a
hot skillet. Add your eggs and move the
pan around to spread them out. When
the omelet begins to firm but is still raw
on top, sprinkle any added ingredients.
Use a spatula to ease around the edge of

the omelet. Fold in half. When it starts

to brown underneath, remove from the
heat and serve.
Warm up this winter and step out of the
box and serve a poached egg on delicious
Ribollita Soup (recipe from Eating Well):
Warm cup olive oil in a saucepan
over medium heat. Add 2 diced carrots,
2 diced celery stalks, 2 chopped redskinned potatoes and 1 diced onion.
Cook stirring for 7 minutes. Add 3
diced tomatoes, 1 bunch shredded kale,
and head shredded cabbage. Add 6
cups chicken broth and boil. Decrease
heat, cover pot, and simmer 1 hour, 15
minutes. Stir in 1 (15.5oz) can drained
and rinsed cannellini beans. Let soup
cool 30 minutes, bring back to a simmer.
Brush 8 slices stale bread with olive oil
and bake in a 375-degree oven until
crisp. Flipping once after 5 minutes. Put
1 slice per bowl and pour soup over. Top
with fresh basil and a poached egg.

Finding and
living your
life
passion
.............................................................
By Lisa Klarner

o you ever find yourself transforming into someone you are not
in certain situations? Maybe you
work in a politically charged corporate
environment or are unable to talk openly
about your passions at family gatherings.
In these situations we may feel like chameleons, morphing our behaviors to align
with perceived expectations. All the while
our hearts cry out, wishing for a stronger
connection to our true self.
For people who have found their
passion, its even more heart-wrenching to
adhere to societal norms, especially when
we are drawn further and further away
from the parts of life that bring us joy.
Many people live their lives on autopilot
and are not even aware of the callings of
their heart. We are all so busy with work,
kids and cell phone addictions that we
rarely take time to pause and reflect on
what it is that we really, truly want out
of life. Are we afraid of what we will find
when we allow our mind to stop for even a
brief moment? What will we hear when we
pause and listen to the silence?
Do you have an awareness of what your
passion is? Begin to find out more about
what you really want to get out of life. There
are many vision exercises you can use to
begin digging into these details. Simply
search for finding your life purpose or
life visioning exercise and check out the
sites that draw your interest in. You will
see typical questions like, If money was
no object, what would you do? or If you
knew you couldnt fail, what would you do?
Hiring a life coach can also be an effective
www.naturespathways.com

way to work through this soul-searching

process.
Practice self-care techniques like meditation, mindfulness and journaling. Taking
the time to reflect and listen will help
clarify what you want out of life. Dont be
afraid to look within. Sure, you may find
some things you dont like, but you may
also find some eye-opening Ahas to help
you begin moving down the right path.
Once you have more insight into your
life passions, begin to take steps to incorporate new activities into your life that
align with your passion:
Research your newfound interests with
books, classes or internet sites.
Share your perspectives by starting a
blog or commenting on existing blogs.
Network with likeminded people.
Expand your social circle to include
more people who are following their
dreams too.
Can we make a living, raise a family and
live our passion at the same time? Is it
possible to do it all? Yes! If you really want
all this, you can do it, but the expectations
you set must be realistic. Your spouse and/
or children still need you. Your employer
may still need you. Your household may
still need the income from your corporate
job. The most important thing that you can
do is find your passion and begin to take
small steps to move down that path.
Pay attention to how you feel when you
begin to align more closely with your true
self. You will be amazed at how wonderful
you begin to feel and how many amazing

people you begin to meet when you spread

your wings and begin to soar. Pursue your
passion today!

What are you

putting in
your
body?
.................................................................
By Brandon Hintz and Diana Jaworski

e have been doing a lot of

research as of late into the
potentially harmful chemicals
and additives that not only show up in
our foods, but in our environment. Sure,
nowadays its impossible to be 100 percent
clear of these items in your diet but
what about cooking methods, utensils and
the basic environment we live in? These are
all areas where we health-conscious individuals can be more cognizant of what we
are actually allowing into our bodies.
I have found I need to educate myself

and look a little deeper. I think this is

especially true for those of us with young
children. Paying a little more attention to
what we consume may very well extend or
improve your quality of life.
Most companies No. 1 priority is
getting you to buy something, so they
hide these harmful extras with marketing
terms, fancy-sounding ingredient lists and
slogans all to push the sale. For example,
whats in your salad dressings? Sauces
and condiments? There very well could
be extra calories, additives and chemicals

that are undermining your health and hard

work in the gym. In general, the shorter
the ingredients list, the better especially
when we are talking whole foods.
I challenge you to take a serious look
into some of these items you are always
using. For example, spray butter: Is it really
a zero-calorie miracle? Some products
arent always what they claim to be.
Several of the experts who are seeing this
firsthand basically say its not just what you
eat, but how you cook it and what you cook
it in. The containers, our air, what goes on

Yes, I know what you are saying: Its just
too overwhelming; were doomed, right?
Well, not exactly. There is hope! We might
never be 100 percent free of potentially
harmful manmade chemicals, but you can
start by checking out this useful list below
for tips on making your lifestyle a little
more chemical-free.

20 tips for ridding your life of

chemical calories
1. Eat organic meat and produce.
2. Eat foods with low chemical

calories. (The worst offenders are

butter, salmon, spinach, strawberries, cream cheese, raisons, apples,
dill pickles, summer squash, green
peppers, collards and processed
cheese. Exceptions to this list are
organic versions of these products.)
3. Use organic or chemical-free
cosmetics whenever possible.
4. Drink filtered water and bathe with
filtered water.
5. Look for household cleaners that do

www.naturespathways.com

not contain chemicals.

6. Take your supplements on a regular

basis. (We suggest taking a multivitamin supplement, Coenzyme Q10,

omega-3 essential fatty acids, milk
thistle, soluble fiber and alpha lipoic
acid.)
7. Wear natural fiber clothing and
avoid clothing that is flame retardant or easy care.
8. Have an air filter in your car, and
stay at least four car lengths away
from vehicles when driving.
9. Use air filters in your home.
10. Fill your rooms with plants that
absorb toxins, such as spider plants.
11. Use natural bug repellants.
12. Use gloves when fueling your car
with gasoline.
13. Look for toys made of natural
materials.
14. Dont store food in plastic containers. Fat acts as a magnet for chemical calories.
15. Do not use cling-free wrap or
plastic containers when heating
food in a microwave.

16. Dont drink hot beverages from

polystyrene cups.

17. Avoid using nonstick frying pans.

18. To speed up the outgassing of

a new refrigerator or stove, leave

inside small containers of vegetable
oil to absorb the toxins.
19. Avoid chemical hair dyes. If you
must use them, take extra vitamin
C and E and a dose of soluble fiber
before your visit.
20. If you eat a meal that is high in
chemical calories, take some soluble
fiber as soon as possible to reduce
the absorption.

Nutrition set out to determine the single
measurement that would reveal the most
information about a persons heath. The
conclusion was waist circumference is the
best indicator for health. The basis for this
is that fat around the waistline, or visceral

Those hormones increase inflammation
through at least 15 different mechanisms
and decrease insulin sensitivity, which can
lead to type 2 diabetes and other chronic
diseases.

Additionally, 50 percent of those with

is caused by persistent organic pollutants

HOMOCYSTEINE: This is traditionally

regarded as an independent marker for

cardiovascular health. Another reason to

inflammation is the bodys response to

is why knowing your HsCRP is important.
Inflammation associated with a chronic

Our clients usually have tried other

traditional methods and are searching for
something different. Our services at Get
Connected Counseling are unique to the
Midwest and include Brainspotting, HeartMath, Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT)
and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). All interventions are
guided by ego state therapy, neuroscience
and attachment theory.
All our practitioners have advanced
training in trauma counseling and believe
in counseling with compassion and mindfulness. At the heart of our practice is
connection: supporting and teaching clients
to connect to themselves and others.
One of our most popular services clients
seek is Brainspotting. This approach can be
easily described as Where you look affects
how you feel. Brainspotting is a powerful,
focused counseling method that reduces
and can eliminate emotional distress,
body pain and tension. It harnesses the
mind and bodys natural self-scanning,
self-healing ability to untangle trauma,
and limiting self-beliefs at the core of
the clients unconscious. Another way
to describe Brainspotting would be: it
is a method that uses focused mindfulness and an access point to give the client
the ultimate results. Clients will become
aware of how their unconscious is playing
a significant role in their suffering. With
this information, we support our clients

Jeff Ryan

in their ability to take charge of their lives

with intentional choices that are based on
a new, positive self-understanding. With a
new understanding, clients start to believe
new choices are possible and start acting
on them. In many instances this leads to
transformational change for the client.
All of these unique and beneficial
methods have influenced our mission
statement, which reads: Inspired by
witnessing transformational change, we
help our clients heal by going to the core of
their issues and connecting them to their
true selves.
The practitioners at Get Connected

Can psychotherapy
be both scientific
and
spiritual?
................................................................
By Phyllis Kasper

his is a rather delicate subject, but there are a few thoughts

Id like to express. Some people feel that science is the enemy
of faith, and that therapy can make people cold and selfish.
This viewpoint of science goes back to 1633, when Galileo faced
the Inquisition for determining that Earth revolves around the sun,
instead of the other way around. More recently, therapy for selfactualization appeared selfish, and rational emotive therapy (RET)
emphasized a logical approach to emotions and seemed cold. In my
view, self-actualizations goal is to bring you into your best self, so
that you have more to give to others. RET is a great way to learn how
to not sweat the small stuff or the big stuff that you cant control.
Its important to remember that the customer is always right;
when you are in therapy, you have hired an expert to help you
reach your goals with an approach that respects your personality and values. Therapy isnt about handing over your free will to
another person.
I believe that a healthy person gives equal emphasis to mind,
body, spirit and emotions. When these powers work together in
balance and harmony, healing occurs. So I often ask new clients
about their spirituality and how they relate to it. I think that spirituality and faith can be a tremendous resource, providing hope
and inner strength. Or they can be a burden by promoting guilt,
fear and shame. For example, people with anxiety and panic
disorders can be shamed by their church or other spiritual family
with the idea that if you had true faith, you wouldnt feel fear. Or
they can receive comfort and support. A client suggested I go to a
different church every Sunday and hand out pamphlets on treatment for anxiety/panic to people in the last three rows and those
coming late and standing at the back.
The ability to forgive is important to both spiritual and psychological health. The need to let go of the past is especially evident
in people who have suffered childhood neglect and abuse or
have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from more recent
events. The prevailing cause of PTSD in the civilian population
is the motor vehicle accident. It is hard to forgive the person who
causes you chronic pain, disability and PTSD through their drunk
driving or otherwise bad judgment.
www.naturespathways.com

One very interesting client came for help with forgiveness. She
had a strong Christian faith and was motivated to forgive, but was
having a hard time of it. She had chronic pain and disability as a
result of another womans careless driving. What made it so hard
was the drivers lack of remorse and even acknowledgement of
responsibility. In court, the uninjured driver claimed to not even
remember the accident.
My client felt that the devil had her by the toe through her
anger, bitterness and resentment. We were able to obtain her
release through therapy, especially with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for her PTSD. I hope the devil
was disappointed at losing such a beautiful soul.
If you are hesitating to enter psychotherapy out of fear that your
faith or lack of it will be judged harshly, just do the research and find
the right therapist. Therapy encourages hope and provides comfort

Out with the

How you can participate
in textile recycling
...........................................
By Jennifer Semrau

ho didnt get a new sweater or another article of clothing for the holidays? Or perhaps with a New Years
goal of weight loss and improved fitness and in a
few weeks, a new jean size to boot? Another popular resolution
involves decluttering and house cleaning. Whatever the reason
for purging out your closet, dont just toss your unwanted items.
Recycle them!
Textile recycling includes the collection of clothes, shoes and
accessories, as well as towels, bedding and even drapery. According to the Council for Textile Recycling, the United States generates an average of 25 billion pounds of textiles each year, which
equates to approximately 82 pounds per person. Sadly, 85 percent
(or 70 pounds per person) ends up in our landfills, with only 15
percent recycled or donated. One reason for low recycling rates
is that people often do not realize clothing in fair or poor condition shirts with missing buttons, pants with tears or thread bare
towels can be recycled.

According to Jackie King, executive director of Secondhand

Materials and Recycled Textiles Association (SMART), 45 percent
of recycled textiles are reused as apparel. SMART further explains
there is only a 15-20 percent chance that a specific donated clothing item will be worn by someone in your community. Charities
often receive far too many donations and may use other secondhand markets to sell top-quality donated apparel. Some of your
apparel may even be compressed into large cubes, baled and
shipped to international markets! The second largest percentage
(30 percent) of recycled textiles are cut into wiping rags or polishing cloths, which are used in commercial and industrial settings.
Finally, approximately 20 percent of textiles are recycled to their
basic fiber content. The ground-down fibers can be remanufactured into upholstery, furniture stuffing, home insulation, carpet
padding, automobile soundproofing, building materials and
various other products.
A small percentage (around 5 percent) of the recycled textile
stream is discarded. Explanations include textiles being wet,
moldy or contaminated with solvents that cannot be recycled. For
this reason, if you use a rag to clean up gasoline or varnish, that
item should not be recycled. In addition, this is part of the basis
for textiles not commonly being collected curbside. While cans
and bottles, and even paper and cardboard can withstand some
moisture and still be recyclable, clothing and textiles are much
more susceptible to uncontrollable elements, prohibiting commingled curbside collection. Further, local recycling facilities are not
designed to process textiles with other household recyclables.
While certain areas of the country are experimenting with
home collection of textiles, here in northeast Wisconsin, drop-off
textile recycling is the norm. Thankfully, there are an abundance
of options for recycling textiles. If you participate in consignment
sales or a clothing swap with a church or charity, items should be

gently used. But if dropping off textiles at a retail thrift store or

even one of the many kiosks popping up at gas stations, convenience stores and other parking lots, items in nonperfect condition are completely acceptable.
It is important to keep materials clean and dry to maximize
their second life. Place your items in plastic bags or boxes and seal
or close them to prevent the elements from ruining your goods.
If youre using an outside kiosk, rather than leaving items outside
a full kiosk, bring them to another location or check back on a
different day. Finally, certain thrift stores/textile recyclers do offer
home pickup of large volumes of textiles or at certain times of
year; check with your local providers.
If you are unsure where you can take textiles for recycling, the
Council for Textile Recycling offers a search tool at http://weardonaterecycle.org/locator/index.php.

Infant
hearing
testing
......................................
By Dr. Stephanie Long

eople are often surprised that newborn babies can be tested

for hearing loss, but in fact, Wisconsin law requires that
all babies born in a hospital be tested before they leave the
hospital. When a child is not born in a hospital, the family has 30
days to complete the testing.
Most people who perform newborn hearing screenings use a
tool called otoacoustic emissions (OAE). Happily for the newborn,
this is a test that requires no patient participation. A small soft tip
is gently placed in the babys ear canal. The tip delivers a series
of quiet sounds to the ear (actually the cochlea, the organ that
does the hearing). A normal cochlea responds to these sounds by
sending a signal to the brain, I heard that, as well as producing
an acoustic emission. These emissions are very small sound wave
responses that travel back out of the ear. A tiny, sensitive microphone inside the soft tip picks up the emission. The OAE instrument then records a pass or refer response.
This entire test takes less than one minute in each ear assuming the baby cooperates. Fortunately, newborns can be tested
while they are nursing or sucking on a pacifier or bottle. The

room needs to be quiet but it need not be a soundproof room.
Many times we have siblings quietly playing while we are testing
the baby.
The OAE screening test is a very reliable measurement of how
well the cochlea is working. If a child should fail this test, a more
comprehensive and diagnostic test can be done that shows how
much hearing loss there is at each frequency. This test is painless and is the auditory brainstem response test (ABR). The test
requires small electrodes to be glued (with a very gentle glue) to

the babys head. Little tiny earphones are placed in the babys ear
canals. Different pitch tones are presented to the baby. These tones
become softer and softer so an actual audiogram (the picture of
hearing) can be determined. This test works best if the child is
sleeping while testing is occurring.
Hearing loss cannot be seen, so testing is important. Approximately 3 in every 1,000 babies born have some degree of hearing
loss.
Most children born with hearing loss have some hearing. When
hearing loss is mild, it can be challenging for parents to notice
without testing until their child perhaps begins to exhibit speech
delays. For example, if a parent is holding their infant, the parents
voice is close to the babys ears and the baby may be hearing part
but not all of the sounds of speech. The baby needs to be able to
hear all of the sounds of speech and overhear their parent if they
are on the other side of the room.
Universal hearing screening is important. By testing infants we
can provide parents and children with the support and the technology options that each child requires (hearing aids or implants)
so that they can develop speech, language skills and later academic
skills with far less difficulty.

Assisting you on your

path to rejuvenate and
purify your body!
.......................................................

atural Healing Solutions, owned

and operated by Carol Ann and
Carl Sterken, has been providing its like-minded, health-conscious
customers with a unique service since
2008. The Sterkens have created a tranquil
and calming atmosphere for your colonic
experience, with soothing sounds of water
coupled with the relaxing and healing
sounds of soft music.
Good health is your choice! Natural
Healing Solutions believes colon hydrotherapy (also referred to as a colonic) is a
very important modality in maintaining
good health. Carol Ann has experienced
the benefits of colon hydrotherapy personally and is a big proponent of colonics and
regular detoxing. A few years back she had
developed several chronic conditions and
colon hydrotherapy, along with a proper
diet of fresh fruits, raw nuts, vegetables
and herbs, played a tremendous part in her
quest to regain optimal health.
Your colon is the No. 1 way your body
eliminates toxins. The buildup of toxic
debris weakens the colon muscles and
72

Natures Pathways | January 2015

impairs their functioning. If youre not

eliminating regularly, these toxins will stay
trapped in your body lodged in your
organs and cells. Over time, this accumulation can cause disease and obesity.
Your colon affects all the other organs
in your body. When its impacted, your
liver cant function properly. When your
liver cant work efficiently, your kidneys
will suffer, your lungs will not perform
optimally and so on. The colon is where all
the waste in our bodies is stored until it is
ready for elimination. If youre not eliminating two to three times per day, the old
feces stores up in your colon; proteins start
to decay, fats turn rancid, carbohydrates
ferment and all of these toxins are reabsorbed and circulate back to the bloodstream, attacking our organs and joints,
and causing disease.
While your lungs, skin, kidneys and
liver also serve to eliminate toxins, people
have experienced throughout history that
when they make certain their colon is
cleansed and rejuvenated, the well-being
of the whole body is greatly enhanced.

Colon hydrotherapy helps to restore the

pH balance of the body, stimulates the
immune system and allows free passage of
nutrients into the blood.
Cleansing your colon is a valuable
modality in treating disease and promoting wellness. Colonics cannot solve all
health problems, but they are a very
important therapy in the overall quest for
vibrant health.

Thicker waist but

thinner wallet?
8 tips to reverse your postholiday situation
....................................................................................
By Rosalie Misco (Grandma Rose)

ou want to lose the weight you put on over the holidays but
your wallet is thinner because the holidays are expensive.
You cannot afford to go to the man on TV who says its
not your fault youre fat or the expensive nutritionist to learn to
lose weight.
Dont worry; Grandma Rose is here to help and it wont cost you a
penny.
Weight loss is not as hard as you think. This plan keeps it simple,
is easy to prepare and is really easy to stick with. It is also a healthy
diet loaded with vitamins and minerals no supplements needed.
Heres what to do:
1. Start now and eat only protein: all kinds of meat, fish, eggs and
cheese. Do not eliminate fat from your diet. Cook meats in larger
quantities, such as a beef roast or whole chicken, and keep them
in the refrigerator to make getting your protein easier.
2. Eat only single foods; no combination foods. (Ice cream may
have protein, but is not a single food; it has sugar and other
stuff.) This means no processed foods. No breaded fish or
breaded anything as these are combination foods.
3. Along with protein from meat eggs and cheese, eat vegetables
lots of vegetables and salad with only full-fat dressing. (But
no potatoes! They are high in starch; do not eat them at all.) Use
frozen vegetables, not canned, and cook them in the microwave.
If you want to combine vegetables with meat in some way that is
fine as they are two single foods that you put together. An omelet
can have mushrooms, onions and cheese. Because you put them
together from single foods, they are not combination foods.
4. Add fruit to the protein and vegetables, but only fresh fruit and
no fruit juice. You can eat plain full-fat yogurt that you add
berries and Splenda to. Full-fat cottage cheese is also good with
fruit added.
5. Do not eat grain of any kind at this time. Do not eat rice: it
is almost pure starch. No bread, crackers or pasta either. Eat
nothing made from grain, potatoes or rice.
6. Dont count calories. Theres no need to count calories when
you follow these tips because you will feel satisfied and still
lose weight.
7. If you put sugar in your coffee, switch to Splenda or stevia. Use
www.naturespathways.com

cream the real stuff, no fake cream or skim milk in your

coffee if you need it.
8. Smoothies that you make from single ingredients mentioned
in the tips above are acceptable. Remember to use full-fat milk
in your smoothie.
By eating protein, fat, eggs, meat, fish, cheese, vegetables and fruit,
you are consuming a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. You will
lose weight. If you are exercising, that is great. Your exercise will be
more effective on this diet and you will lose more weight. You will
not be hungry.
If you have a blood sugar issue, follow these tips and your blood
sugar will fall. Note: If you are taking diabetic medications, you will
need to reduce them as your blood sugar falls.

Jane takes
control of her
pregnancy
and labor
Peace and Wellness Centers
guidance allows new mom
to give birth drug-free
.................................................................

fter some friends told me about

HypnoBirthing, I knew I wanted to
take that route with my new pregnancy and upcoming delivery, instead of
using potentially dangerous drugs. HypnoBirthing teaches you how to calm your mind
and put yourself in a fearless and hopefully
pain-free hypnotic zone during your labor
and delivery. I looked into a few different
options, including one through the hospital we were using and was not impressed; I
knew there was a medical spin on it and it
taught things I already knew.
I had heard about the Peace and Wellness
Center and owner Trish Poole through the
many years of reading Natures Pathways
and I decided to give her a call to see if she
offered HypnoBirthing. I was delighted to
find she did! She was so sweet and warm
on the phone, I knew she was the right
HypnoBirthing teacher. I decided I wanted
to go the route of having more of a private
session with just Trish, my husband and I
so it could be tailored to how I was feeling,
versus a generalized group setting.
Generally, you set up four sessions with
Trish when going through HypnoBirthing, however my husband and I set up two
74

Natures Pathways | January 2015

as I had already been listening to some

sessions online and read the HypnoBirthing book on my own.
Trish was so welcoming at our first
appointment and it was so wonderful
to have the one-on-one experience. We
discussed the fears both my husband and I
had so she knew how to tailor the sessions
to our needs. The first session, she put us
in hypnosis to calm us and change our
attitude about the birth experience. She
recorded the session for us to listen to at
home and sent us home with some papers
and new techniques.
Our second session, she showed my
husband how to put me into deeper
hypnosis with a hand drop technique. She
also put me in a walking hypnosis so I
could practice putting myself deeper while
still moving around and walking through
contractions. She educated us on many
techniques for deeper trance and acupressure for inducing labor after 40 weeks.
Trish was so friendly during each session
and would follow up by phone and email
to make sure we were comfortable. When
it was time for our son to arrive, I was able
to put in Trishs hypnosis CDs she made

me and calm myself down. The instant

my water broke I listened to the CD; I also
brought it to the hospital. The nurses made
comments of how calm the room felt and
how in control I seemed.
Although, certainly not pain-free, I had
a good control on the pain of labor and was
able to turn that into thoughts of pressure
instead. My husband was able to use his
techniques to help me regain control when
I seemed to be losing it.
Thanks to Trish and the rest of my
birthing team we were able to have drugfree and calm birth experience. I would
certainly use Trish again for a refresher if
we decide to have another child and would
not hesitate to refer her to my friends and
family.
If youre a mother to be and interested
in HypnoBirthing, contact Trish today!

Tanacetum parthenium,
Chrysanthemum parthenium

riginally a plant native to the

Balkan mountains of eastern
Europe, feverfew a short bush
with daisy-like flowers now grows
throughout Europe, North America and
South America. For centuries, traditional uses of feverfew (also called bachelors buttons or featherfew) have included
fevers, headaches, stomach aches, toothaches, insect bites, infertility, and problems

76

Natures Pathways | January 2015

with menstruation and with labor during

childbirth. Newer folk or traditional uses
for feverfew include migraine headaches,
rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, allergies, asthma, tinnitus (ringing or roaring
sounds in the ears), dizziness, nausea and
vomiting.
The dried leaves and sometimes
flowers and stems of feverfew are used
to make supplements, including capsules,

tablets and liquid extracts. The leaves are

sometimes eaten fresh.

What the science says

Some research suggests that feverfew may

be helpful in preventing migraine headaches; however, results have been mixed
and more evidence is needed from welldesigned studies.
One study found that feverfew did not

www.naturespathways.com

reduce rheumatoid arthritis symptoms in

women whose symptoms did not respond
to conventional medicines. It has been
suggested that feverfew could help those
with milder symptoms.
There is not enough evidence available
to assess whether feverfew is beneficial for
other uses.
National Center for Complementary
and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)funded researchers have studied ways to
standardize feverfew; that is, to prepare
it in a consistent manner. Standardized
preparations can be used in future studies
of feverfew.

Side effects and cautions

No serious side effects have been reported

for feverfew. Side effects can include canker
sores, swelling and irritation of the lips and
tongue, and loss of taste.
Less common side effects can include
nausea, digestive problems and bloating.
People who take feverfew for a long time
and then stop taking it may have difficulty
sleeping, headaches, joint pain, nervousness and stiff muscles.
Women who are pregnant should not
use feverfew because it may cause the
uterus to contract, increasing the risk of
miscarriage or premature delivery.
People can have allergic reactions to
feverfew. Those who are allergic to other
members of the daisy family (which
includes ragweed and chrysanthemums)
are more likely to be allergic to feverfew.
Tell all your health care providers about
any complementary health practices you
use. Give them a full picture of what you
do to manage your health. This will help
ensure coordinated and safe care. For tips
about talking with your health care providers about complementary and alternative
medicine, see NCCAMs Time to Talk
campaign.
