STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Purpose of Study & Professional Plans

The boundless possibility of trying out and the instant knowledge of the outcome that
stimulates one for further analysis of a rationale in question, is what I find most appealing
about Mechanical Engineering. Keeping up an inquisitive and explorative attitude, I believe,
leads to a constant learning process. This approach adds to the already immense potential for
innovation that exists in this field.
For firmer grounding in basic concepts, I made myself strong in Mathematics and
Science from my school days. Quantitative and Analytical Skills were something innate that
helped me to maintain an excellent scholastic record. Later on, this became a wonderful base
at the time of my Under - Graduation, where I broadened my knowledge and skills eternally.
A series of events have cumulatively led to my interest in Mechanical Engineering.
My first experience with aviation was when I was gifted an aircraft playing kit during my
preteens. I was very much intrigued by the way it travelled over the skies. It definitely kept
my curiosity on tenterhooks. My excitement in Aeromechanics field carried over in to the
called and it was no surprise that I picked Mechanical Engineering as my major. I pursued
Mechanical Engineering with a special focus on Composite Materials. The course facilitated
me in understanding the rudimentary principles of Composite Materials. I enjoyed the
constant interaction with other people, both my peers and professors, who were as passionate
about Composite Materials as I am.
As a student in the final year of undergraduate study for a Bachelor of Engineering
degree in Mechanical Engineering, I look to graduate study to refine my knowledge and skills
in my areas of interest. I believe it will also serve to give direction to my goal of a career as a
research professional at an academic or commercial, research-oriented organization. I intend
to pursue an Post - Graduate degree in order to reach that goal.
Academic Background & Research Interests
In my undergraduate studies, I have benefited from the breadth of K.S.Rangasamy
College of Technology (Autonomous) syllabi content that has given me a comprehensive
exposure to the core areas of Mechanical Engineering and a strong conceptual understanding
of the same. In these three and half years of study, I have strived to maintain an approach of
expending independent effort in all my endeavors. Learning by myself and sharing my
knowledge with others has been most worthwhile, when comprehending a concept.

Over the past two years, I have developed an interest in the areas of Composite
Materials and Nano-Technology. I have done a mini-project work on Design and
Fabrication of Natural Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Composite Bumper using Hand Lay-up
Technique during my sixth semester. I have presented a poster entitled Multi-Scale finite
element analysis of bulk nano particle fabrication by a mechanical method in an
International Conference on Nano Science and Technology (ICONSAT-2010), Organized by
IIT BOMBAY from 17th to 20th February 2010. However, for my MS degree, I remain open
to other topics as well.
For my B.E project, I have decided to concentrate on my area of interest viz. Copper
Epoxy Composites. I'm attempting to study the Wear properties and Heat transfer properties
of the Copper Epoxy Composites. The ongoing work has introduced me to a vast body of
pertinent research, such as the University of Auckland's Centre for Advanced Composite
Materials. This has served to sharpen my inclination to engage in active research within this
area.
Apart from my Under Graduate study, I have also attended three additional courses A workshop on Nano-Materials and Devices for Energy Applications at IIT BOMBAY and
two more workshops on Recent Trends in Automotive Technologies and Subtractive Rapid
Prototyping held at PSG College of Technology.
(Please see attached Resume' for the Academic and Co-curricular distinctions)
A strong and sound proficiency in academics alone will not guarantee a
topnotch technocrat position. Experience coupled with in depth analytical skill will definitely
ensure a promising career ahead.
In conclusion, I would like to add that the essence of University education lies in the
synergetic relationship between the student and his department. I feel that graduate study at
your University will be the most logical extension of my academic pursuits and a major step
towards achieving my objectives. I would be grateful to you if I'm accorded the opportunity
to pursue my graduate studies with financial assistance at your institution and am able to
justify your faith in me.
