New video footage
reopens investigation of
Fanshawe area party

A video released on a social net-
working site has reopened the
investigation of the Oct. 31, 2009
Thurman Circle street party, which
occurred near the Fanshawe Col-
lege campus in London.
During the assembly, 22 people
were arrested, including 11 stu-
dents.
According to Amy Phillipo,
media relations officer for the Lon-
don Police Service, they are now
looking for witnesses to identify any

Learning council loses fed funding

The federal government announced
on Jan. 8 it would no longer be pro-
viding funding for the Canadian
Council on Learning.
The council was created in 2004
in order to, “provide Canadians
with the most current information
about effective approaches to
learning for learners, educators,
employers and policy-makers,”
according to its website.
The federal government funds
provided 95 per cent of CCL’s fund-
ing. It is unclear how the council
will be able to continue their
research when the funding runs out
at the end of March.

you write its admissions
test.
Among other councils
based in the United States,
GMAC requires students to
provide digital fingerprints
before writing the GMAT.
According to Dave Wilson,
president and chief executive offi-
cer of GMAC, the purpose of
implementing this system of
identification was to prevent stu-
dents from hiring others to write
the test on their behalf.
“If you are simply relying on
government issued ID and digital
photos there is no way that could
stop imposters,” Wilson said. “In
2003, we uncovered imposters
who were operating both in Cana-
da and the United States. They
had, just in the GMAT, 156 differ-
ent cases where they had taken
the test for other people. We had
their digital photo and govern-
ment ID in every case and in every
case it was issued to a different
person.”
In addition to the use of finger
and thumb prints, infrared scans
of blood vessels are being used for
hoping to continue functioning,
though its operations will be scaled
down dramatically.
“The volume [of research] will
be about 15 per cent of what we’ve
been able to do for the last few
years,” Cappon noted.
“We will certainly continue
because the national reports we pro-
duce — particularly on higher edu-
cation — are so important to Cana-
dians.”
Over the past five years, the
council has conducted research
and published reports on different
aspects of learning, from adult lit-
eracy to early childhood education.
Shawn Lewis, press secretary for
London-Fanshawe’s NDP member
of Parliament Irene Mathyssen,
explained Mathyssen was “quite
disappointed in this action, [which]

world are required to provide fin-
gerprints before writing the
GMAT and LSAT, those going for
their LSATs in Canada are not
required to do so.
According to an article in The
Star, the Office of the Privacy
Commissioner of Canada is cur-
rently investigating the GMAT fol-
lowing a concern raised by a stu-
dent in Toronto.
“I can confirm that we are
investigating the GMAT, but
unfortunately cannot comment
further [on the issue] […] as we
are currently investigating the
matter,” Anne-Marie Hayden,
director communications at the
Office of the Privacy Commis-
sioner, said.
A similar concern was raised in
2008 regarding the Law School
Admission Council’s use of finger-
prints, which was followed by a
change in LSAC’s requirements. In
the complainant’s view, finger-
printing infringed the student’s
right to privacy. The individual
had also raised concerns that

prints could be accessed by the
U.S. authorities under the USA
Patriot Act.

The council has earned interna-
tional acclaim for its innovative
Composite Learning Index, which
uses statistical data to analyze
Canada’s progress in learning of all
kinds. The index is being used as a
basis in the development of the
similar European Lifelong Learning
Indicators project in Germany,
according to CCL’s website.
The council is not the only edu-
cation-related organization to lose
federal funding recently. Last week
the Canadian Millennium Scholar-
ship Foundation, which provided
financial aid to post-secondary stu-
dents, was also officially dissolved.

Facebook joins forces
with academia
Facebook will soon be entering the
academic world.
The popular social networking
site has announced the creation of
the Facebook fellowship program,
aimed to support graduate stu-
dents in the 2010-2011 school year.
The fellowship is open to U.S.
PhD students in computer science,
computer engineering, electrical
engineering, system architecture
and related fields. According to
Facebook’s website, it takes pride in
students’ ability to solve problems.
“Every day Facebook confronts
[…] the most complex technical
problems and we believe that close
relationships with the academy will
enable us to address many of these
problems at a fundamental level,”
the site noted.
According to Facebook’s web-
site, each fellowship application
must include a research summary,
a resumé, two letters of recommen-
dation and a faculty sponsor. In
addition to a $30,000 stipend, suc-
cessful applicants will receive
$5,000 for attending conferences
and an additional $5,000 to pur-
chase a computer.
While the fellowship is currently
only available for the upcoming
academic year, it may be extended.

allegedly faking his credentials.
Jason Walker, a 31-year-old who
held the position of chief executive
officer of Health Point Consulting,
claimed to have a doctorate in
forensic and behavioural sciences,
as well as a degree in medical epi-
demiology.
These credentials were called
into question after he contributed
evidence to an alleged child abuse
case last fall.
Walker’s evidence helped lead to
a court order preventing the father
from having access to the child,
however it also called into question
his qualifications as an expert wit-
ness in the case.
Suspicions arose when an inves-
tigating officer questioned his age
against the extent of his credentials.
Walker claimed to have studied
at the University of Victoria, the
University of Toronto, McMaster
University, the University of Cal-
gary, Yale University and Smith Col-
lege, an all female liberal arts col-
lege in Massachusetts.

Google investor gives
back to UBC
The University of British Columbia
will be the recipient of a $2 million
donation.
David Cheriton, a current pro-
fessor at Stanford University and
one of the original investors in
Google, made the donation in sup-
port of the Carl Wieman Science
Education Initiative at UBC.
The CWSEI was created approx-
imately three years ago when Carl
Wieman, director of the CWSEI,
first arrived at UBC.
Wieman explained the initiative
was directed towards taking the
“new and improved” understand-
ing about learning and how it is
achieved and measured, and get-
ting it implemented in the college
science programs and university
teaching.
“This donation will help to pro-
vide more support so we can do
more towards achieving our goals,
and it will also improve undergrad-
uate university teaching and learn-
ing,” Wieman stated.
“By taking this research-based
approach it will show there are
thoughtful people who believe in
this and will hopefully inspire peo-
ple both inside and outside of the
university for other donors to put in
support for this,” he added.

pers in hopes of identifying any
other individuals involved.
“We have a committee that
works proactively on issues involv-
ing students,” Emily Marcoccia,
director of marketing and corpo-
rate communications at Fanshawe,
said. “Three of our members were
on site immediately, including one
police officer. I personally got a
phone call in the middle of the
night regarding the event.”
The committee at Fanshawe
reviewed the 11 student arrests
individually to determine whether
further action should be taken. The
College recently strengthened its
student code of conduct, which
now denotes if a student’s actions
off-campus are found to negatively
affect the health and safety of those
on campus, the code of conduct
can be applied.
“I don’t think any school can try
to govern students’ behaviour off-
campus,” Jabari Cooper, president of
the Fanshawe Student Union, said.
“One of the cases was deter-
mined significant enough that the
student was suspended immedi-
ately,” Marcoccia explained. “I
believe the charge for that student
was assault of a police officer. If the
student had the propensity to harm
a police officer then they might

of differences between how West-
ern and Fanshawe work, one differ-
ence being that Fanshawe has an
off-campus code of conduct where

“It is unfortunate that this hap-
pened and that students celebrat-
ing Halloween had to resort to this
type of activity. We need to work as
a community at Western and Fan-
shawe to better educate students
about being responsible members
of the London community,” Moul-
ton added.
Cooper seconded this state-
ment.
“There has to be a stronger rela-
tionship between the College, stu-
dents and police so that there is
mutual respect,” he said.
Marcoccia reflected on the
unfortunate situation.
“We are a big college and we
have an incredible track record with
our students. The actions of a few
bad apples are really dragging
down the reputation of everyone,”
she said. “Currently, we have 140
charity projects on the go involving
our students and yet this issue is
being brought to the forefront.”

Media marking dawn of new decade
A look at the movies, music and shows debuting in 2010
Bizarre art depicts bleak future, lost past
Morbid Curiosity showcases unique and intriguing artwork

The Arts Project in downtown
London is currently home to the
bizarre collection of artwork cre-
ated by Andrew and Bryan Moore,
aptly titled, Morbid Curiosity.
In Andrew’s part of the show,
the morbid and the strange reign
supreme as expressive tools in his
quest to open dialogue about cur-
rent social and political issues.
Although his art is politically
charged in nature, don’t expect his
work to be gracing the covers of
activist manifestos any time soon
— his commentary is dark and the
overall message seems to be one
of despair.
Andrew’s piece entitled “City in
Flames” is filled with disturbingly
violent scenes, depicting acts of
torture and distorted figures while
the city in the background burns
and the highways around the fig-
ures crumble. The piece seems
symbolic of the general theme
within his work — the not-so-
pretty picture of the direction our
society is heading.
The highlight of Andrew’s por-
tion of the show is his series of five
struggles. They are rich with sym-
bolism and full of current, relevant
ideas.
A particularly poignant piece in
the series depicts the Four Horse-
men of the Apocalypse as a mili-
tary official, a politician, a pope
and a business man. This seems,
again, to be not just a commentary
on the current state of affairs but
also its direction, as Andrew seems
to suggest in the piece these four
aspects of society — military poli-

tics, religion and capitalism — in
their current guise, will bring
about the demise of humankind.
The dark and bizarre vein run-
ning through Andrew’s work flows
through Bryan’s portion of the
exhibit as well, although in a much
different way.
Bryan’s work, rather than a
commentary or aiming to relay a
message, is an incredibly atmos-
pheric depiction of the once cul-
turally prominent circus and med-
icine show.
His part of the exhibit begins
with a bottle of tonic, half-filled
with a syrupy auburn liquid, show-
cased in a display box decorated
with a painting of an old advertise-
ment for the medicine. It is an
excellent way to set the tone for the
paintings to follow as it gives one
the sense of stepping into a medi-

We’re done reflecting on 2009 — it’s
time to take a look ahead at what’s
coming up in the world of entertain-
ment. If you’re feeling the winter,
back-to-school blahs, here are some
television shows, movies and albums
coming out this year that should give
you something to look forward to.
What’s Coming Up in 2010
Television
The Deep End: Premiering later this
month, this new drama centers
around five young law associates
accepted into a prestigious Los
Angeles law firm. The attractive
leads soon find themselves facing
stiff competition, tough ethical
dilemmas and love triangles aplen-
ty. We’re picturing Grey’s Anatomy
with lawyers.
Treme: HBO is known for push-
ing the envelope, so we’re looking
forward to seeing its upcoming
depiction of a post-Katrina New
Orleans. Without much informa-
tion available yet on its plot, only
time will tell if Treme (pronounced
Truh-may, after a city in New
Orleans) will be a gripping drama
or annoying moral treatise.
Parenthood: Remember that
Steve Martin movie from the 1980s?
NBC’s upcoming series of the same
name marks the second attempt at
its television spinoff. The first try in
the 90s quickly bombed, but per-
haps producers Ron Howard and
Brian Grazer can make it work this
time around. The best part: hilari-
ous motor mouth Lauren Graham
of Gilmore Girls is back on the air.

Movies
Movie-goers should be pleased with
what is to come to the big screen
cine show as it existed in the glory
days of the 19th century.
Bryan’s treatment of such
shows being lost to the past is
interesting. The scenes of old cir-
cus towns and freak shows are
often set off to the side of his
paintings, emerging out of barren
fields of brown, illuminated with
violent skies of almost unsettling
bright yellows and oranges erupt-
ing from dusty, empty skies. It is
like travelling through the empty
past and into a lingering glimmer
of a lost age.
The painting, “City of Dis”
seems to be a clear expression of
this particular sort of culture’s
demise. There are fires raging
throughout an old circus town, a
ferris wheel visible on the fiery
skyline, the bridge leading out of
the town destroyed and various
over the next 12 months. To start the
year off, the book-turned-movie
The Lovely Bones hits theatres Jan.
15. The highly anticipated romantic
comedy Valentine’s Day comes out
Feb. 12. Shortly after April exams
you can see Robin Hood, which will
be released May 14. Other notable
releases include Sex and the City 2,
coming out at the end of May, and
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hol-
lows: Part 1, which will be released
in November.
Music
2010 is shaping up to be a promis-
ing year for new music. Vampire
Weekend’s sophomore album Con-
tra is already streaming on their
MySpace page. MGMT also has a
highly anticipated album, Congrat-
ulations, to follow up the success of
Oracular Spectacular. The White
Stripes are set to release their sixth
album Under Great White Northern
Lights, and other highly anticipated
releases include new material from
Beyonce, Arcade Fire and the Red
Hot Chili Peppers.

placing the viewer back in the
shows of the past as if they were
happening currently. “Conjoined
Man” is one such painting, which
illustrates one of the “exhibits” you
would witness at such a
show. Although the painting con-
tributes to the atmosphere of
Bryan’s show as a whole, in itself it
is not much to look at.
Overall, Bryan and Andrew
Moore provide quite a show. Their
works are expressive and rich, but
also at times disturbing and
unsettling.
Morbid Curiosity kicked off Jan.
5 and is running until Jan. 16 at

paid $820 million in rights fees com-
pared to the $613 million dollars
they paid to televise the Games that
took place in Turin, Italy in 2006.
Ebersol also mentioned this is

been broadcasting them. He began
telecasting the Games from
Barcelona in 1992.

the chances for results. 4. If there’s a genuine sense
of URGENCY, say so. The words, “We‘re Moving” or
“Must Sell Fast” suggests that readers respond im-
mediately. 5. Include your PHONE NUMBER. Clas-
sifieds get results fast and often generate immediate
sales. If you cannot be available to answer the phone
at all times, be sure to specify special calling times
such as “after 6 pm” or “Before 11 am.”
