Shenendehowa quarterback, linebacker led Plainsmen into state playoffs

Ever since the

Shenendehowa High School football team lost to Shaker in the
playoffs last year, then-junior
quarterback Ryan Van Galen was
on a mission to be the best quarterback in Section II, according
to head coach Brian Clawson.
In his senior campaign, not
only was Van Galen the best quarterback in the section, he had the
most distinguished season as a
signal caller in Plainsmen history.
The 6-foot-2 gunslinger set
the Shen single-season record
for passing touchdowns (23) and

passing yards (2,137) both tops

in the Capital Region en route
to leading Shen to its first Section II Class AA championship
since 2011.
For his performance this fall,
Van Galen was chosen as The
Saratogians Offensive Player of
the Year.
Ryan is a dream to have as a
quarterback. Hes a senior and
hes graduating but I wish he was
a sophomore, Clawson said. He
worked at it and he didnt really
care about his statistics, he just
wanted to lead the team to victory every week so that says a lot
about his character.

CLIFTON PARK >> The adage in
sports is that defense wins championships.
The Shenendehowa High
School football team displayed
a dominant defense this fall en
route to a Section II Class AA
championship, and linebacker Oliver Robinson is a big reason why.
The 5-foot-9 senior produced a
team-high 100 tackles, including
three sacks, on a unit that allowed
a mere 47 points in seven regular
season games.
On top of that, Robinson called
all the defensive signals for the

Plainsmen and was an extremely

reliable asset in the middle of
Shens D.
For his performance this season, Robinson was chosen as The
Saratogians Defensive Player of
the Year.
Oliver was the rock that held
the defense together, Shen head
coach Brian Clawson said. Hes
a freak of nature, hes extremely
strong and hes bright. I feel that
has was our most valuable player
on defense this year.
With 1:47 remaining in the
Class AA Super Bowl, CBAs offense had the ball on its own
33-yard line looking to mount a
game-winning drive.

Reid changing the game 1 shirt at a time

Buffalo sports superfan Del Reids 26 Shirts
sweeping state in second year of its campaign
By DJ Eberle
deberle@digitalfirstmedia.com
@DJEberle66 on Twitter

While the Buffalo Bills 2014

season has been full of ups and
downs, one thing remains constant every other Sunday night
there will be a new 26 Shirts Buf-

falo sports themed t-shirt made

solely to benefit those in need.
I like the concept of 26 Shirts
because its a little more personal, 26 Shirts customer and
UAlbany senior Max Schwartzberg said. When you donate to
a charity you dont really know
where the moneys going, its just

going to a place. With this you see

the people its going to and its a
family, or something like that. 26
Shirts creates a much better connection I think.
26 Shirts is a social good project created by Bills Mafia cofounder Del Reid which creates a
Buffalo sports themed shirt every two weeks. Each t-shirt is designed with a specific Buffalo Bills
or Sabres player in mind and stays
on sale for two weeks. At the end

of those two weeks, the t-shirt is

retired and never sold again.
But the best part about each
shirt? 26 Shirts and Reid do not
profit from a single shirt they sell,
and eight dollars of every shirt
sold goes directly to the shirts
specific beneficiary.
The whole motivation behind
26 Shirts is to channel peoples
passion they have for sports into
something productive in the community, Reid said. Thats the

whole goal.
While Reid doesnt fiscally benefit from his endeavors with 26
Shirts, the feeling he gets from
helping out those in need is more
than enough.
When you get to meet a family
member and you get to actually
meet that person whos so grateful because you made a t-shirt and
sold it and gave them the money
theres nothing like that, said

Brian Clawsons presence is always felt.
This past fall, Clawsons impact was felt
in more ways than one.
The third-year head coach guided the
Plainsmen to an undefeated regular season record, its first Section II Class AA
championship since 2011 and a state semifinal appearance.
For his efforts this season, Clawson was
selected as The Saratogian Coach of the

Im in a great situation here. To be able
to have a great staff, great administrators
and the kids are amazing. Theyre very
smart, theyre very committed year-round
to making themselves better, Clawson
said. We had a great team this year and it
was nice to see everything come together.

occurred in the Class AA

Super Bowl against CBA,
when he orchestrated the
game-winning, 71-yard
drive capped off by a Matt
Taft touchdown run with
1:47 to lift Shen to the
championship.
When I threw that pick
to give CBA the ball back
I thought our season was
over, but everyone got behind me and said were going to get another opportunity, Van Galen said. We
came down on that last
drive, punched it in and
won the section title.
Van Galen, a two-year
varsity player, did not rise
to stardom by accident. He
was diligent in terms of his
preparation, lifting three
times a week and engaging in four film sessions
per week.

Ive never really sat a

player down and gameplanned with him for an
opponent, but (Van Galen)
was so smart and he prepared so well, we would sit
down twice a week and go
over the passing gameplan
for our opponent, Clawson
said. I think the open communication line that Ryan
and I had was great and to
have him prepare like that
really sets him apart.
Even before the season
started, Van Galen and his
teammates possessed great
chemistry in the passing
game after competing in
the 7-on-7 tournament in
Hoover, Ala.
Down at Alabama there
were a lot stronger kids
and they jammed, so our
receivers had to time their
routes a lot better and I
had to get it out quicker,
said Van Galen, who set the
single-game passing record

According to senior co-captain Oliver

Shenendehowa ball carrier Oliver Robinson (37) finds opening against John Jay during
second quarter of Class-AA regional football action Saturday, November 15, 2014 at
Dietz Stadium in Kingston, N.Y..

Robinson
FROM PAGE 1

But Shens defense, just

as it had all season, came
up with a huge stand and
forced a turnover with 34
seconds left to seal Shens
first Super Bowl title since
2011.
Us making a stop on the
game-winning drive, forcing a turnover and giving
our offense the ball back
was definitely the highlight of the season, Robinson said. We came together as a team and we
just got it done.
Other than being physically gifted, Robinson, a
co-captain and three-year
varsity player, was probably the smartest linebacker
weve ever had, according
to Clawson.
In fact, in some instances, Robinson knew

the opposing offenses play

before the ball was even
snapped.
With his film study,
he could sometimes call
out different plays the opponent was going to run
based on their formation,
Clawson said. He was the
one who made the adjustments and he would cancel
us out of blitzes if he had
to. To be able to combine
intelligence with power
and speed makes for a
very good football player
and the intangibles Oliver
brings to the table as far as
leadership and the respect
from his teammates just
made him outstanding.
While Robinsons primary role was being a
run-stopper for the Plainsmen, he exhibited noticeable improvement in pass
coverage this fall due in
large part to his offseason
experience competing in
the 7-on-7 tournament in

Hoover, Ala.
Hes going down to Alabama and matching up
against these 6-foot-4 tight
ends and slot receivers and
he held his own, Clawson
said. He was very good
at defending the pass this
year and that facet alone
made him the complete
linebacker that he was.
Hes physical at the line
of scrimmage, hes going
to get that jam on the receiver and if he crosses the
middle, (Robinsons) going
to hit him.
The humble Robinson,
who is undecided on where
hell play collegiate football
next year, lauded his defensive line for his success this
fall.
We had a great defensive line this year, he said.
Just them being a force
and having great players
at those positions makes it
easy as a linebacker to just
make plays.

COACH OF THE YEAR

ANOTHER LEVEL

Taylor Russell

Height:

Year in review: Spartans
head coach Matt Shell
said as a senior Russell
was a great example of a
hard worker. He played as
a junior, but didnt start.
This year he was a starter
and took advantage of his
playing. He pursued every
play to the whistle and a
few times was able to pin
the other team behind the
line.

Shenendehowas Brian Clawson is the Saratogians 2014 Coach of the Year after leading
the Plainsmen to a Section II Class AA championship and a berth in the state playoffs.
