ing since 1942 when his parents built the first house. Stanhope, 83, says the
systems original concrete pipe drainfield was replaced once, about 20 years
ago, but that it has functioned properly for all these years because of simple
maintenance.
It has not given any trouble. We just pump out the septic tank every three
to four years. The secret is to pump it out at regular intervals, he says. And
everything I buy for soaps and cleaning products, I make sure its septic safe.
The interest residents have in their onsite systems is an extension of a
green movement on the island and beyond, according to Stanhope. He explains that residents are offered incentives to insulate their homes, conserve
energy and collect rainwater in cisterns.
Were trying to make everything fall under the green umbrella, he
says. The septic system is just part of the program. Were protecting the
quality of life we have here.

The business makeover includes obtaining state and/or federal certifications as either a small-business enterprise or woman-owned business,
which qualifies the company to bid on set-aside jobs without competing
against larger firms; deciding to install aerobic septic systems with fiberglass tanks made by Hydro-Action Industries, which provide more flexibility

Angela and Calab plan on expanding the companys territory to the
south, farther from Chicago. One of the biggest obstacles is finding qualified
and dependable employees.
Another hurdle: Pricing services at rates that are competitive but still
profitable a difficult balancing act, especially since serving more far-flung
customers increases operating costs. We dont want to low-ball our prices, she says. We just want to be competitive and be open and honest
with customers.
The couple is eyeing land application as a possible solution
to reducing disposal costs. In the meantime, the company already
lowered its expenses by changing to a private waste-treatment facility, reducing disposal costs by about 50 percent. Jeans also now
uses a second disposal site closer to its targeted area for expansion.
Amid all the changes, however, Angela says its gratifying and exciting
to be in charge of a business, with the freedom to take it in new directions.
Im the baby of the family, so I feel like I have something to prove,
she says. Its great to be able to say, Hey, look, we did this all by ourselves.
Growing up in the family business, Ive learned a lot over the years. The
third-generation thing really keeps us motivated.

Sani-Can may construct a new shop large
enough to keep all trucks warm indoors, which
would make dispatching easier. Right now, the
trucks are stacked so we have to move them
around to dispatch, Ronnie says. Adding stalls
would make it easier to choose and send the right
truck for each job without juggling the vehicles.
Shaun is also looking into dewatering
equipment to help beat the high cost of municipal
septic disposal. With the right treatment, septic
waste can be legally applied on the ground as
fertilizer.

Learn how a nontraditional loan program funds septic system repair and replacement in a sensitive
waterfront environment and how it might work in your service area By David Steinkraus
ike any other body of water near a large settlement of people, Puget
Sound suffers from wastewater systems that are leaking, failing or
not up to modern standards. In partnership with local wastewater
professionals and a nonprofit lender, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health
Department created a loan program that allows homeowners to install
new systems while delaying repayment for many years. Although it is just
beginning, the Clean Water Loan Program has been met with an enthusiastic
reception from the local wastewater industry and its customers.
Gary Porter is onsite sewage program manager for the health department and talked to Pumper about the program.
Pumper: What damage was caused by the
lack of proper treatment?
Porter: In Pierce County we have a Marine
Recovery Area located in Puget Sound.
These are designated near-shore waters with
poor water quality, and our work focuses on
improving water quality within the recovery
areas. In Puget Sound there are a lot of
shellfish beds oysters, clams, geoducks
and mussels and these are very important
to recreational shellfish harvesting and to Gary Porter is onsite sewage
the local economy. Many jobs are directly

or indirectly related to the shellfish industry.

problem we see the result in improved water
quality and that can increase the areas for shellfish. The challenge was to
have the improvements made on a large scale.

MOney Manager
Run the numbers on your companys fiscal health and make a few changes to ensure higher profits in 2015
By Erik Gunn
ts another year. What New Years resolutions have you made to improve
the money management of your business? If you have a hard time thinking of any, these tips should help.
1. Get to know your numbers. How closely do you really follow the
metrics of your business sales, expenses, profit? Youd be surprised how
many business owners dont know or just have a vague idea. But even if
you have an outside accountant (see resolution No. 2), you shouldnt simply
rely on that professional to keep an eye on how your business is doing. Its
important to be knowledgeable about those details yourself.
2. Get professional help. So youre already intimately acquainted with
every up and down of your monthly cash flow and balance sheet? Good for
you. That doesnt mean you can do it all by yourself, however. An outside
public accountant will still bring a deeper understanding of what the numbers mean, what they might foreshadow down the road and which ones are
most important for you to pay attention to.
Moreover, the professional accountant brings something else to the
table: a necessary detachment. If youre like most business owners, youre
passionate about what youre doing, and thats a good thing. But as you pour
so much of yourself into the operation, you cant help but get too close to it.
Thats where a trusted adviser provides a necessary counterweight and the
cool objectivity that will help you make the best decisions for the long term.
3. Save for a rainy day. Carve out something from your monthly profits
to put into a reserve fund you can build up over time to help cover lean periods. And leave that money alone until you face a real emergency.
4. Watch your waste. One benefit of paying attention to the financial
details is helping you spot where you are spending money needlessly. Do
you keep too big an inventory of some supplies? That means you spent
more than you needed to stock up at some point. Are you getting the best
deal on insurance, or on finance charges for your business loans, or even
on various commodities you require? Do your drivers let their vehicles idle
unnecessarily, wasting fuel? Is your mobile phone plan giving you the best
return for what youre paying? The list of ways you can shave expenses is
virtually endless.
5. But dont go overboard. When cutting expenses, you need to exercise judgment. I hope youre not driving all over town just to see which
service station has the cheapest gas. But there are other ways in which we
hurt ourselves with thoughtless savings. Skimping on routine machinery

9. Pace yourself. One thing Ive heard a lot in the last year from consultants and business owners alike is the error of growing too fast. When
business is booming, it can be easy to think that more of it will mean still
bigger returns. But the stories of companies large and small that flame out
like that are legion. So if things are going well, count your blessings and
make sure you can take care of your existing customer base before you go
crazy expanding it beyond what you can sustain.
10. Plan ahead. How soon should you think about retirement? How
about, from the day you first go to work? And if thats already well behind
you, then, right now. Put funds into a long-term retirement account so you
dont have to sell the business when you turn 65 just to keep you going financially. (While youre at it, see how you might be able to offer employees
some kind of retirement benefits, too.)
And dont just think about your own fiscal future. For business owners, retirement planning includes looking out for the future of the business
through succession planning so you can groom future leadership and lay
the groundwork for the firm to change hands in an orderly fashion.
GET DOWN TO IT
So there you are: 10 ready-made New Years resolutions that can help
you make 2015 more productive, more profitable and in all likelihood more
fulfilling for you and the business youve worked so hard to build.
Happy New Year.

Seven tips to help you hire top performers for your small business By Richard J. Bryan
our business doesnt run itself. The quality of your organization depends on the quality of your team a motivated, energized staff is
the key to companywide success. You want A players, employees
who contribute disproportionately to the advancement and profitability of
the business.
In the same way that the Pareto Principle states that 80 percent of results come from 20 percent of your employees (based on research by Italian
economist Vilfredo Pareto in the early 1900s), your A players have a measurable impact on your bottom line.
The Pareto Principle is often used in a sales environment, but it applies
equally to a variety of industries. If you can build a team of A players around
you, then your job as a business leader or owner becomes much easier because you do not have to deal with endless crises and can work more intentionally on developing the future strategy for your company.
So how do you find A players for your team?
The funny thing is that you can find them in the strangest places. A few
years ago, James was running a car dealership that was lacking in quality
salespeople. He received a call from his wife while she was out shopping for
strollers, and she asked him to meet her at the store.
I want you to meet Louise. She has a great attitude, and I think youll
like her.
Ten minutes later he was walking into the shop to meet Louise. She was
a class act and spent the next half hour asking them lots of questions about
their lifestyle. Once she had all the information she needed from them, she
launched into a brilliant sales demonstration of various products. She was
impressive.
They ended up spending over $1,000 in the shop that day and were
thrilled with their interaction with Louise. James was particularly impressed
by her enthusiasm, her energy and her ability to listen intently to their needs
and then repeat this information when closing the sale. Too many salespeople believe that selling is about talking, but in reality it is about the ability to
listen to their customers in order to truly understand their needs.
A few days later, James offered her a job. He wasnt sure that selling cars
had been on her career plan, but she took a risk and joined the team the following month. Initially Louise struggled a bit because she had no product
knowledge, no customer base and was the only female on a sales team of 30
people. However, after support from James and the upper-level staff and a
combination of hard work and a positive attitude, she began to flourish. By
the end of the year, she was the top salesperson at the dealership.
When you are seeking A players for your business, dont just look for
skills and experience. Start by looking for someone with a great attitude.
Here are seven tips to help you find your own A players:
1. One-page plan. Have a simple plan that you can share with future
employees. This plan highlights what you have achieved as an organization

wner Larry Maznek bought a silver 2006 Peterbilt 378 as a rolloff container truck and converted it for pumping in 2011 with a
4,100-gallon skid-mounted steel tank from Amthor International
tied to a National Vacuum Equipment Challenger NVE 866 pump. The
truck has a 385 hp Cat C13 Acert RTO1490 powerplant and an 8LL Eaton
transmission. The rig has an AirTrac suspension and full-locking rears,
a Vulcan onboard scale and 50,000-pound K-Pac Equipment hoist. The
tank is built to be easily swapped out for a 20-yard container on the roll-off
hoist system when Maznek wants to haul materials for an onsite system
installation. An extra-long hose allows the tank to be hoisted during
pressure dumping. The cab is silver and the wheels are aluminum, with
additional chrome accents. The truck features top and rear manways, rear
sight glasses, a front sight tube and a rear safety beacon. Universal Sign
Works of Manchester, N.H., did the graphics. Maznek uses the truck for
residential and commercial pumping and installs.

Well-informed septic system users are good for septic service providers and the industry as a whole
By Jim Anderson, Ph.D.
QUESTION: What do you tell a first-time homeowner?
ANSWER: As I travel around the country conducting onsite workshops
for professionals, one common theme I hear is that we need to educate
homeowners about their systems. Sometimes I hear recounting of what service providers do to educate the homeowner. Other times, workshop participants say, I wish someone would do something to educate customers. It
would make my job so much easier.
In my role as an educator, I also field a lot of questions from homeowners. They ask what kind of toilet paper they should use or how often they
should pump their septic tanks. As industry professionals, we all have an
important role to play in consumer education. This issue is nothing new.
EARLY EDUCATION EFFORTS
When I first worked in the onsite program at the University of Minnesota, my colleague Roger Machmeier had developed a simple publication
entitled Get To Know Your Septic Tank, which was handed out to installers,
service providers and real estate agents to share with their customers. It included a couple of diagrams of a septic tank and drainfield configuration,
along with detailed descriptions of each of the components.
There were also some tips about the proper use of septic systems, including not using the toilet as a wastebasket for cigarette butts and other
products, spreading clothes washing duties out during the week, staying
away from use of the garbage disposal, having the tank maintained regularly
and making sure to fix leaky fixtures.
Over the years, technology advances and new components hit the industry, making it difficult to cover all the necessary consumer education tips
in the small publication. This led to the development of The Homeowners
Guide, which is available through the University of Minnesota Onsite Sewage Treatment Program and the Minnesota Extension Service. An excerpt
can be viewed on the programs website at septic.umn.edu.
The guide includes a handy table leading the homeowner through a
series of questions to help determine how often they should have their septic tank maintained. While questions have been raised about just how accurate this estimator is for different areas of the country, it leads the homeowner through a logical process and heavier users will understand they
need more maintenance than households with fewer people and lighter
use of the septic system.
OTHER SOURCES OF INFORMATION
As we are all aware, systems now are likely to have a lot more components than the septic tank to gravity drainfield. The homeowner also needs
to be aware of maintenance frequency for pumps and pump tanks, pressure

Anti-theft
contAiner lid
secures greAse

SPOTLIGHT
By Ed Wodalski
Grease Vault anti-theft lids from Wastequip are designed for safe and
simple storage of used food grease at collection sites, including restaurants,
schools, hospitals and hotels.
Basically, anybody with a truck, pump and a container can break into a
grease container, harvest the grease and sell it, says Amanda Maeyaert,
product manager, Wastequip Container Division. Theres not a lot of regulation on where the grease is coming from. One of the common methods for
breaking into a grease container is to use a crowbar to pry open the lid or the
edges. This lid does not allow for that.
The anti-theft lids, available in middle- and end-dump styles, feature interlocking plates with no edge to pry open, shielded lock and heavy-duty, dropin flat grate or optional box grate with sloped surface. The lid and grate system are standard on Wastequip grease containers and can be retrofitted on
most existing containers in about a minute. No welding or tools are required.
There are two plates that slide together, creating the lid, she says. A
grate that allows for grease disposal slides into the middle of both interlocking plates, securing the lid.
Available in 100-, 208-, 294- and 360-gallon capacities, the containers have a lip overhang to prevent spills and can be emptied by vacuum or
dumping. Containers are 32 3/4 inches (100 gallons) or 60 inches long (208,
294 and 360 gallons); 32 3/4 inches (100 gallon), 33 inches (208 gallons) or
42 inches wide; and 36 or 41 inches high (360 gallons). The fully assembled
containers weigh 230, 340, 385 or 406 pounds.
When vacuuming you would remove the padlock, take out the grate and
vacuum the contents, Maeyaert says. For parts of the country that are colder,
they might have to heat the grease by placing the container in a steam bath

Florida wastewater professionals lobby to stop a statewide ban on landspreading septage set for 2016
By Doug Day

including desalination and surface water. We typically talk more about nitrogen here in Florida, but its a nutrient issue. Not just onsite, but all contributors. Were going to have to stay very aggressive to make sure onsite wastewater doesnt take a larger portion of the responsibility than we should.
Landspreading and springs protection are always going to be front and
center. We are very involved in the legislative process. In order to do that, we
have a political action committee to raise campaign funds and our members
work hard to use it properly and stay active.
FOWA is a large group. What is the history?
Groover: We started as the Florida Septic Tank Association and celebrated our 40th anniversary in 2013. There werent strong regulations or
requirements for registration for onsite providers back then. A group of contractors wanted to make sure that our industry was well-represented and
that people in the industry were professionals.
We became the Florida Onsite
Wastewater Association in 2002 as
the industry changed. We moved

neer by trade and started out with
FOWA as the director of engineering and education. I take an active role in the legislation, education and public relations campaigns for the association. Sherrill Parr has been with us for
12 years and she is the director of financial and business management.
What is your role in education?
Groover: FOWA is the primary trainer of master and registered septic tank contractors and Department of Health employees. Weve also seen
quite a few plumbers and engineers involved in our training lately.
(continued)
FOWA has had a training center since 1999 where we educate the public
and professionals on water conservation and wastewater alternatives. Our
new Education Building [in Lake Alfred in central Florida] was completed
in 2006. It has a research facility that promotes and showcases a variety of
wastewater treatment alternatives.
I also travel a lot, teaching about 50 classes on the road every year. Given todays economics it makes more sense for me to travel to an area and
have 30 people come to a class than it is for them to travel a day or two to take
classes in Lake Alfred.
Registered contractors in Florida are required to have 12 continuing
education units a year and Masters need 18. Environmental health people
need 24 CEUs every two years and we handle their onsite training. We try to
put regulatory people and onsite professionals in classes together. Getting
them in the same room tends to lead to better discussions and understanding, better rules and regulations, and better installations and maintenance.
