ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY OF
BARANGAY PAMARAWAN, MALOLOS, BULACAN

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Bulacan is known to be plentiful in its natural resources, agricultural areas and sea
products. During the Spanish regime, there were events and happenings in a remote coastal area
surrounded by palm trees, wooden shrubs, creeks and rivers. There were only a very few houses
erected therein not much of inhabitants. Their important source of livelihood for their
families is catching shrimps which are abundant in the rivers, creeks and along the seaside.
Thats the reason for even strangers in nearby areas and as far as Pampanga goes there
to get a share of bountiful harvest of shrimps. Pamarawan is a barrio within the
boundary of Pampanga thus not making it only a destination for the people from Bulacan but
also from Pampanga that are making harvesting of shrimp a means of livelihood. The natives of
Batang, Pampanga called the place PARAW which means shrimp. Time quickly passed by and
the houses and families grew bigger and bigger. Even those coming from other places established
their residence in the barrio, even the Kapampangans. In 1998, the place became a regular barrio
and called it PAMARAWAN, meaning plenty of paraw or shrimps according to Kapampangans
who resided there.

Not all Filipinos and even Bulaceos are aware of the Pamarawan island. This research
aims to give the readers certain knowledge about the aforementioned baranggay.
Pamarawan is a barangay of the philippine component city City of Malolos in the province

that lies between the river delta of Malolos or the latian, and the Manila Bay. It can only be
accessed by motorized bancas. The breathtaking scenery might be a consolation for the 3045minute boat ride, but behind this beauty hides a number of possibilities that might happen
anytime, especially when the circumstances are not favorable. It is both a blessing and a curse
that the community is situated where the rivers and the sea meet. Because it is a fishing village,
when the sea is on the season of plenty, the people benefit a hundred percent from what the sea
has to offer. But this is not always the case as marine life becomes scarcer and scarcer.

Pamarawan is not only rich in natural resources but it has beautiful and intelligent woman
too. The concrete example is Czarina Catherine Gatbonton who is one of the three reigning
Binibining Pilipinas 2010, and she represented the Philippines in the 60th edition of Miss World.
Aside from winning the title Binibining Pilipinas-World, she was also the recipient of the Manila
Bulletin Readers Choice Award. Gatbonton, who was hailed from a small island village of
Pamarawan in the historic Malolos, Bulacan, is a sophomore student taking up Hotel and
Restaurant Management.

Statement of the Problem

The general problem of the study is to let the people know how to use the resources
without destroying it. The researcher wants to give idea on Pamarawans people how important
their wealth from nature and how the resources can help them in daily life. They need to be
conscious that the abundance of seafoods in their barangay can help the barrio to be known in the
city.

Significance of Study

This research is conducted to have the residents become more aware of their current situation,
and come up with solution to further determine the problem and create solutions to resolve the
problem. Also, to raise ideas to further improve Pamarawan by helping them to learn proper
segregation and conducting community service to clean their barangay. Another is, to utilize and
manage the use of natural resources. Just like from a soap commercial it says Prevention is
better that cure of which I agree so much. Pamarawan is such an amazing place if only the
residents, with the help of the government can focus more on the problems and make preventive
measures to reduce the continual deterioration of the natural resource surrounding the island.

Local community- The important of the study is to every residence in barangay pamarawan
must to be knowledgeable to eliminate harmful waste for the sake of everybody because not
only the surroundings will be going to be affected but also our residence in this place.

Entrepreneurs- Discipline people are the keys to disciplined surroundings. Everyone have their
own responsibility to take care of their main livelihood.
