• What set of numbers would be the
appropriate domain and range for:
– r = 0.15s – 250?
Objective 2: “The student will demonstrate an
understanding of the properties and attributes of
functions.”
“An electronics store estimates that it’s
monthly return (profit or loss), r, can be
described as a function of its total sales, s,
for the month using the function r = 0.15s
– 250. What set of numbers would be an
appropriate domain and range for this
function?”
Objective 2: “The student will demonstrate an
understanding of the properties and attributes of
functions.”
“An electronics store estimates that it’s monthly return (profit or loss),
r, can be described as a function of its total sales, s, for the month
using the function r = 0.15s – 250. What set of numbers would be
an appropriate domain and range for this function?”
The domain = # of dollars the store has in sales for the month. For this
example, sales ≠ negative . Therefore, domain: s ≥ 0.
For the range:
• Think of r = 0.15s – 250 as r (s) = 0.15s – 250
• Let s = 0
• r (0) = 0.15(0) – 250 = -250, i.e. for sales = 0, the store would show
a return/loss of -$250.
• Therefore, the range: r ≥ -250.
Objective 2: “The student will demonstrate an
understanding of the properties and attributes of
functions.”

• “The average daily high temperature for the month of May in
Jonesville, TX is t = 0.2n + 80 [t (n) = 0.2n + 80]; n = date of the
month. May has 31 days. What is a reasonable estimate of the
range of this function?”
The range of this function is the set of all possible values for the
________________ variable in the function, the average daily high
temperature.
To determine the range of the function, determine the minimum and
_______________ daily high temperatures for the month.
Objective 2: “The student will demonstrate an
understanding of the properties and attributes of
functions.”
• “The average daily high temperature for the month of May in
Jonesville, TX is t = 0.2n + 80 [t (n) = 0.2n + 80]; n = date of the
month. May has 31 days. What is a reasonable estimate of the
range of this function?”
The range of this function is the set of all possible values for the
dependent variable in the function, the average daily high
temperature.
To determine the range of the function, determine the minimum and
maximum daily high temperatures for the month.
The minimum daily high will occur May 1: n = 1. Solve for the
minimum.
The maximum daily high will occur May 31: n = 31. Solve for the
maximum.
The minimum daily high: t(1) = 0.2(1) + 80 = 0.2 + 80 = 80.2
The maximum daily high: t(31) = 0.2(31) + 80 = 6.2 + 80 = 86.2
Therefore, a reasonable range: 80.2 ≤ t ≤ 86.2
