Dear Dr. Winter, I need implants in my upper and lower

arches. I have had several consultations and opinions all over
the board! Some of the consults said I only needed 4 implants
for the upper and 4 for the lower and others have said I need
just two for the lower. I did tell them I wanted to be able to
have teeth that didnt come out and I dont have a lot of bone
in either arch. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Jack J.
Dear Jack, there are several good questions here. I will try
and break them down and I encourage you and the readers to
read my articles on Upgradeable Dentistry and Advanced
Treatment
Planning
under
publications
at:
www.hamptondentalassociates.com where I have written
articles about these very questions. I also outline in various
publications the differences between removable overdentures
and fixed implant bridges and show examples of each type of
implant treatment.
First of all, without a consultation and x-rays I cannot
comment on your specific situation. The number of implants
you require is dependent upon the quality and quantity of
your remaining bone, your budget and the type of prosthesis
you require. Whether the implant restoration should be
fixed or non-removable by the patient or whether it is
acceptable to remove the implant supported denture and take
it out at night is a personal decision and both have advantages
and disadvantages. Most people that lose their teeth want
fixed teeth. In addition, the patients health, medication(s)
and anatomy all play a role in deciding upon the ideal implant
restoration. It is important to note that sometimes we can start
with a removable implant denture due to budgetary
constraints and add implants over a year or two and Upgrade
to a fixed restoration or bridge when finances allow!
Next, we can discuss the number of required implants. In
the upper arch most people have already been wearing a
denture or partial and they have already undergone bone loss.
As bone is lost in the upper jaw the sinuses expand and in
order to place implants in this area there is a need to grow
the bone by doing a sinus grafting procedure and possibly a
block grafting procedure. This sinus augmentation is a
procedure that will allow implants of normal length to be
placed in the posterior upper jaw. A way to bypass this is a
zygomatic or long implant that is used in an all-on-four
procedure. This procedure will place 4 implants at angles that
are used to support a full arch of denture teeth or a hybrid
prosthesis. This may be a predictable procedure but replacing
14 teeth (24 roots) with 4 implants doesnt provide as large a
margin of safety as using 7-9 implants per arch. This is a
matter of philosophy and the treating implant dentist and
surgeon will be able to explain their philosophy based upon

their education, skill and judgment.
As far as the two-implant option given to you for your
lower arch, this is strictly to support a lower overdenture,
which is removable. In order to have a fixed restoration
(non-removable) you would require a minimum of 6
maxillary and 5 mandibular implants in my practice. That
being said if you are able to place more implants and overengineer the situation you are always better off, as these
extra implants will redistribute chewing forces over 6-9
implants, instead of just four.
We offer complimentary implant consultations or
comprehensive examination and x-ray visits to our readers.
Please call us at 414-464-9021 to schedule your visit! We
look forward to meeting you. You may see examples of our

and achievements have impacted me in a
very meaningful way. You have enriched
my life, Datka wrote in the letter. To the
many coaches that have shared our sideline, I thank you for your work ethic, your
loyalty and the wonderful memories you
gave me. I never would have lasted 40-plus
years without your support.
After his final home football game a
victory against Grafton on Oct. 15, 2010
Datka again thanked players and the com-

munity for their support.

Hopefully, our players have learned
commitment, respect and treating others the
way you want to be treated. Furthermore, I
feel football more than any other sport
requires a commitment to the team since the
team usually has large numbers with various personalities and abilities but we all
have to work together, Datka said later. I
honestly don't know exactly what I said, but
it was something to the effect that the players believed and worked hard to build our
tradition, the parents supported me and
their children and the community has been
wonderful for my family and I.

Current UWWashington County students as well as
prospective students (high school seniors
and non-traditional age students) are
encouraged to apply now for financial aid
and scholarships. Scholarship applications
for the 2015-16 academic year at UWWashington County (UW-WC) will be
accepted until February 14, 2015.
Scholarships recognize academic success
and help provide financial support for students who have demonstrated academic
excellence, leadership and community
involvement.
Three financial aid & scholarship workshops are planned at UW-WC on the following dates:
Tuesday, December 16, 1pm-3pm
Wednesday, January 14, 5pm-7pm
Saturday, February7, noon-2pm
The workshops will include information
on how to apply for financial aid; scholarships available through UW-WCs
Foundation; tips on how to make your application stand out; how to use UW-WCs
improved online scholarship application

and ways to find other scholarship opportunities (outside those offered by UW-WC).
Registration is required for the workshops as space is limited.
To
apply,
visit
https://wshscholar.uwc.edu/workshops/
or see the campus website at

Fighting stress in a non-stop world

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN
STAFF WRITER
The ubiquitous buzzword in todays culture in stressand, unfortunately, it is not
going anywhere. The question is how to deal
with it and keep it in check.
Stress is a fact of life, but being stressed
out is not. We dont always have control over
what happens to us, says Allen Elkin, Ph.D.,
director of the Stress Management
Counseling Center in New York City, in a
Readers Digest article. Yet that doesnt
mean we have to react to a difficult, challenging situation by becoming frazzled or
feeling overwhelmed or distraught. Being
overly anxious is not just a mental hazard; its
a physical one too. The more stressed out we
are the more vulnerable we are to colds, flu,
and a host of chronic or life-threatening illnesses. And the less open we are to the beauty and pleasure of life.
Donna Bennett is a recreational therapist
in the inpatient unit in Mental Health Services
at Froedtert & the Medical College of

Wisconsin Community Memorial Hospital.

She has spent 22 years in the field of mental
health and she has a lot to say on the subject
of stress.
Stress is growing (among people in
todays society), she said in a phone interview with the Express News. We want to do
more, there are more options on the things we
can do and we never relax anymore. We are
always multi-tasking.
Multi-tasking, however, is by its very definition a flawed approach, Bennett pointed
out.
Research shows that multi-tasking is not
really effective. You are not in the moment
attending to the task. You are more forgetful
and it takes longer to accomplish the task,
she said.
Know your triggers: As they say, knowledge is power. Be aware of what might set off
a stress attack, the mental health professional
said. The big stressors are exactly what one
would thinkfamily, work, communication
issues in both of these areas, finances, she
listed. There is also the worry of how to get

Brandtjen takes oath at local event

Wisconsin Assembly Rep.-elect Janel
Brandtjen held a local version of the swearing in ceremony for her new position at the
Menomonee Falls American Legion Post
Dec. 29.
Brandtjen, who had been a Waukesha
County Supervisor for several years, was
elected to the 22nd District Assembly seat
in the November general election. The
22nd District includes portions of
Menomonee Falls, Lannon, Lisbon, Richfield
and Erin.
Brandtjen will serve in the Assembly
while maintaining her supervisor seat on
the Waukesha County Board. The official
swearing in ceremony for the Assembly
post will be next week in Madison.
During the ceremony, she took the oath
of office from Pastor Peter Kelm.
This is between Christmas and New
Years and I was planning on nobody showing up, Brandtjen said to attendees.
Thank you so much, Im so humbled I
really am, to have this many people here.
She thanked the American Legion for
opening the facility for the event and
thanked several supporters, including
Menomonee Falls Trustee Katie Kress,
Waukesha County Supervisor Jennifer
Grant Lisbon Town Board Supervisor
Hannah Heinritz, U.S. Rep. F. James
Sensenbrenner and Rep. Don Pridemore,
along with her husband and children.
Thank you, Im looking forward to this

job. I will be accessible, Im going to be

conservative, and more importantly Im
here in Menomonee Falls so you can
always reach me, Brandtjen said. Thank
you so much for coming.
Sensenbrenner opened the program by
noting an inauguration is a beginning.
This is really an auspicious beginning
for a representative from this community continue on in the tradition of Don Pridemore,
Sue Jeskewitz, Lolita Schneiders and all of
those people who have represented this
community over the years, Sensenbrenner
said. Menomonee Falls has been truly
blessed to have leaders and outstanding representatives to the Assembly.
Brandtjen will succeed Don Pridemore,
who retired from the Assembly. Pridemore
said it was an honor to serve residents over
the past 10 years.
I never knew quite what I was getting
into and I made a significant career change
from being an electronics engineer to political life, Pridemore said. He noted he was
involved in one issue or another since
was 30 and decided to step down after
reaching retirement age.
In Janel I saw someone who could
take over the reigns very smoothly. Shes listened to my comments and suggestions
very well. I think shell do an excellent job,
Pridemore said.

things done with both the husband and wife

working and the kids in various activities.
Make a plan: Once you know what
will trigger your stress, be proactive in dealing with it, said Bennett. Make a plan for
how to cope. Look at what your options are
and have a strategy in place, she said.
Engage in physical activity: One way
to handle stress better is to literally work it
out. Do something physical, Bennett recommended. You dont have to go running, but
do somethinggo for a walk, stretch, let some
energy out.
Quiet your mind: Two easy ways to
accomplish this are reading and meditating. Meditationcalming the mind, focusing
on deep, slow breaths and counting to five
for each inhale and exhaleis very helpful
when done right, said Bennett. "You can do
it anytime, anywhere you need to. It is not
something we are used to doing, but it really
helps. When a person is stressed they tend to
take shallow, what I call anxious breaths in
the upper part of the chest.
Make a spiritual connection: People
with no spiritual base tend to more stressed
out, according to the experts. It doesnt have
to be a specific religion or church, or even a
church at all, explained Bennett. Just having a connection to nature can help.
Cognitively engage: The mental health
professional urges individuals to use their
brain. Take part in an activity in which you
have to focus to be successfula puzzle, a
word search Sudoku, she said. Even some
electronic games work for this.
However, sometimes its necessary to...
Pull the plug: Take a break from electronics, especially at night, said Bennett.
They stimulate your brain and it is hard to
fall asleep which contributes to stress.

Have a support system: You need

your people, Bennett stated simply. You
cant make it on this earth without your people. You need your family and friends and if
you dont have friends, make some through
volunteering and taking recreation classes
and things like that.
Most of the time stress can be handle inhouse, but sometimes the situation is more
dire and in those cases...
Make a call: There are hotlines and
warmlines available in each county, Bennett
said. Hotlines are for when you are in crisis
and a warmline is for when you just need to
talk about your stressors.
Too many people sweep their stress
under the carpet and hope it will vanish. It
will not, stated Bennett.
If you dont do anything and you're not
willing to make changes in your lifestyle and
behaviors, things are not going to get better,
she said. There are so many effects of
stress...concentration problems, cardiac
issues, back and neck pain...theres even correlation to cancer. At a certain point our
body fights back and says, Notice me!
Notice me!
It is all within our power to make the
change, Bennett said.
We make choices, she said. Do we
have to have our kids in every (activity)?
What message are we sending to our kids
when we live like this? Everything is a
choice.

CALLING ALL HOME

IMPROVEMENT BUSINESSES!!!
is pleased to invite you to participate in the

How to cut the clutter and

take back your home
(BPT) - You've reached your breaking
point. You've tripped over the same thing
in the living room too many times. Now
you've picked it up to finally put it away
and you realize - you have nowhere to
put it. You have too much clutter in your
home. So what do you do? How do you
decide where to start so you can reduce
the clutter in your home and make your
walkways safe once more?
Getting started is easier than you
think. If you want to take control of clutter, get a few boxes - start with one for
each room in your home and begin
organizing one room at a time.
Begin this initiative by removing
everything on top of your cabinets,
tables and in bookcases, and then place
it all in a box, says Keith McCleary, academic director of Interior Design at The
Art Institute of York - Pennsylvania. If
there are other random accessories in
the room, remove those, too. Keep just
the basic furnishings. Now sit with the
room in its simplest form for a short time.
"In room design, make good decisions about what you choose to put in
the room and, often more importantly, in
what you choose to leave out,"
McCleary says. "Simplicity and clean
lines make a room feel livable, and that's
what it's really all about: comfortable living." Think about the kind of focal point
you're trying to create. How should you
orchestrate this space and show off your
special pieces in terms of size, scale,
color and texture?
After a day or two has passed, go
back to the box and look for items that
define your personality, or will be
noticed by guests visiting your home.
"Ask yourself: when is enough, enough?"
says McCleary. "Each piece of furniture
in the room can function to complement.

This is a great opportunity to

reach more customers for the 2015
season. Its the best home show
value in southeastern Wisconsin!

Call Melissa at 262-238-6397

to reserve your booth today!

Accessories and works of art should contrast."

When you look at your welldesigned room, you should see positive
elements, as well as appreciate the possibility for negative space by removing
unnecessary pieces that don't add to the
design composition.
Interior design students at The Art
Institute of York - Pennsylvania are taught
to help their clients step back and ask
themselves: Is it finished now? You can
err when you go shopping and purchase
nice pieces for your home, because
before long you may have accumulated
too many of those nice things. Take a
hard look at some of those things you
don't really want or need; it might be
time to share that stuff with your local
Goodwill.
Sometimes, you might think you have
to keep memorabilia or outdated gifts
from Aunt Ethel in your home all the time.
"Not so," says McCleary. "It's perfectly
acceptable to remove those items when
you do your box exercise." If you get a
call from Auntie when she plans her next
visit, head to the attic and put those old
Beanie Babies she gave you when you
were a fanatical collector decades ago
on a shelf in your den - temporarily. She'll
be happy for the gesture. When she
leaves, feel free to put them back in the
box of memories until her next visit.
After you complete this exercise in
each room in your home, you'll notice
that the clutter has disappeared. Now
you can recognize how attractive the
remaining items are in that same space.
This initiative takes determination and
focus, but when you've completed the
exercise, your focus can be on the lovely
space you've recreated.
