PRIVATE PILOT CERTIFICATION COURSE ASEL

F.I.T. AVIATION, LLC

INTRODUCTION
The Private Pilot Certification Course, Airplane Single Engine Land (ASEL) flight training syllabus is designed to meet
the requirements of 14 CFR Part 141, Appendix D. Its design will allow an enrolled appropriately rated Student Pilot to
acquire the proficiency and experience needed to meet the certification requirements for a U.S. FAA Private Pilot
(ASEL) Certificate. The performance criteria specified in the syllabus is based on the current FAA Private Pilot (ASEL)
Practical Test Standards. All enrolled students of this course must meet these standards before graduation from this
course.
This flight training syllabus contains three (3) stages and includes a total of thirty seven (37) separate lessons. Each
lesson includes an objective and a completion standard. Each completion standard must be met in its entirety before that
lesson may be considered complete. The individual lesson and stage times are not mandatory and are included at the top
of each lesson for flight instructor and student guidance only. However, before graduation from the course, a student
must meet the following minimum training hours:
Total

Flight
Training
5.0

Dual

Additional training requirements that must also be accomplished before graduation are included within the completion
standards as appropriate for that lesson.
Within each stage, lesson sequence may be adjusted as necessary to accommodate training continuity problems. This is
permitted as long as training objectives are not compromised.
Dual lessons should include pre and postflight briefings as appropriate. Although there are no required times for the pre
and postflight briefings, they must be sufficient to ensure that the student understands the lesson objectives and
completion standards for each lesson.
Every lesson contains a detailed list of elements that the student must successfully complete. Normally a lesson is
expected to be satisfactorily completed within the recommended time; however, if a student is unable to master the
lesson in that time, it will be necessary to repeat those elements that need practice.
At the end of each stage of training, a stage check has been included to check the students progress. Each stage check
must be accomplished satisfactorily before the student may continue training in the next stage. However, only at the
discretion and with the authorization of the Chief Instructor, a student may be allowed to continue training in the next
stage before completing a previous stage of training.
The final lesson of the flight training syllabus is the End-of-Course Test. This lesson is designed to ensure that the
student has acquired the aeronautical knowledge and skills required by the current FAA Private Pilot (ASEL) Practical
Test Standards.

PRIVATE PILOT CERTIFICATION COURSE ASEL

TRAINING SYLLABUS
Enrollment Prerequisites: The applicant must hold a current Student Pilot certificate and a Third Class medical
certificate prior to beginning the solo phase (Stage 2) of the course. Prior to completing the Private Pilot Certification
Course (ASEL), the applicant must meet at least the minimum hourly requirements as specified in the introduction.
There are no perquisites for beginning the ground portion of this course. The applicant must be at least 16 years of age
to complete any solo flight lessons.
Ground Training Requirements: The applicant must satisfactorily complete all the required ground training lessons
including the final ground End-of-Course test.
Flight Training Requirements: The applicant must satisfactorily complete all the flight training lessons, stage checks
and End-of-Course test.
Requirements for Graduation: To obtain a graduation certificate for the Private Pilot Certification Course (ASEL), the
applicant must:
A. Be at least 17 years of age.
B. Be able to read, speak, write and understand the English language.
C. Satisfactorily complete all ground course training requirements prior to the End-of-Course test.
D. Satisfactorily complete all flight course training requirements
E. Hold a valid and current FAA Medical and Student Pilot Certificate.
F. Successfully complete the FAA Private Pilot Airplane Knowledge Test.

GRADING CRITERIA
FOR THE STUDENT AND INSTRUCTOR:
The overall performance grade for each lesson completed is based on the knowledge, preparation, skill, attitude and
judgment of the student.
The standards to be used in the End-of-Course Test will be at least those specified in the appropriate FAA Private Pilot
(ASEL) Practical Test Standards (FAA-S-8081-14B).
The student should be evaluated on performance, both in academic ability as well as flying ability. A lesson is not
complete until the instructor or check instructor is satisfied that the students performance meets the completion
standards in all areas. All elements on each lesson must be graded as an O (Outstanding), G (Good), or M
(Marginal) in order for the overall lesson grade to be S (Satisfactory). Any element graded as an I (Incomplete)
or U (Unsatisfactory) correspondingly makes the overall lesson grade I or U and must be repeated until one
of the aforementioned grades is obtained in order for the overall lesson grade to become satisfactory.
For stage checks and End-of-Course Test, all elements must be graded with an S, U, or an I. For the stage
checks or End-of-Course Test to be completed, all elements must ultimately be graded with an S.

PRIVATE PILOT CERTIFICATION COURSE ASEL

STAGE 1

Stage Objective

During this stage, the student will obtain the foundation for all future aviation training. The
student becomes familiar with the training aircraft and learns how the aircraft controls are used
to establish and maintain specific flight attitudes. Ground reference maneuvers are introduced in
order to learn methods of controlling wind drift. Emergency procedures, including emergency
approach and landing without power, are introduced and reviewed. Basic attitude instrument
flight is also introduced. Takeoffs, landings, and operations to and from the practice areas will
be introduced and reviewed. The stage culminates with a stage check in order to assess the
students readiness for solo flight.

Stage Completion Standards

At the completion of this stage, the student shall demonstrate proficiency in basic flight
maneuvers, aeronautical knowledge, and possess the ability to fly solo.

PRIVATE PILOT CERTIFICATION COURSE ASEL

STAGE 2

Stage Objective

This stage allows the student to expand the skills previously learned. The stage begins with the
students first solo flight. The student will be introduced to, and develop proficiency in shortfield and soft-field takeoff and landing procedures. Additionally, greater emphasis is placed on
attitude control by instrument reference to increase the students skill and safety. In the crosscountry phase, the student will learn how to plan and conduct cross-country flights using
pilotage, dead-reckoning, and radio navigation, and to conduct safe flights in the national
airspace system. Night flight operations, including takeoffs, landings, and cross-country flight,
are introduced and practiced. This stage concludes with a stage check in order to assess the
students readiness for safe solo cross-country flight.

Stage Completion Standards

This stage is complete when the student can accurately plan and conduct cross-country flights.
The student shall also demonstrate proficiency in diversion procedures and operations at
uncontrolled airports. Night flight operations shall be conducted at the proficiency level of a
Private Pilot.
